    • Yeah like the person said, on average you don't get money for editorials, covers, or runway - it's almost as a favor to you really, because you get exposure which in turn gets you more work. So they can use that as incentive not to pay. What models make money from is campaigns (billboards and ads, being the 'face' of a company for a few months) Ironically though, the cheaper brands pay big time. So Chanel, Dior, Hugo Boss, etc might look prestigious and all, but the girls/guys doing Maybelline, H&M, Guess, Gap, Levi's - that's where the money's at

  • I got contacted by a modeling agency 2 years ago. I'm from Belgium and they were located in the Netherlands so they invited me over and said that they would pay for the night. I was a bit sceptical but after researching the agency, I decided to just go for it. From the minute I said foot in their headquarters, I felt intimidated and unwelcomed by their cold (but pretty) receptionists. The booker who contacted me acted charming but I could tell how fake she was. We had a little conversation before heading upstairs to begin my first shoot. It was absolutely horrible. The photographer didn't seem satisfied. Ever. I really tried my best to pose like a model but it was never good enough. I saw him sigh of frustration multiple times lol. 2 big ass spots were aimed at me and I could hardly focus on the camera while there were 5 other people staring at me the whole fucking time. Besides the posing commands, it was quiet as fuck as well. I felt insanely stressed out and was sweating my balls off. The shoot only lasted an hour but it felt like an eternity. In hindsight, it really was the most uncomfortable experience I've ever had. Afterwards, I went to the shitty hotel they arranged for me and bawled my eyes out. I normally never cry (I practise karate and box regularly so I'm used to a lot) but that night I felt extremely lonely and like a failure. I took the train the next day and promised myself to never do any modeling again and stay away from that fake, superficial world

  • Very true. I modelled with a guy in one of the top fashion capitals who nearly went bankrupt working as a model. Not only that, but he also dealt with a lot of sexual harassment mostly from male photographers. He eventually went back to being a mechanic. Both female and male models in general do not have it easy. There should be a union like in acting.

But it’s probably not talked about more because this is one of the few fields that women actually dominate. And it’s not even a decision making job. In most other job fields men will dominate the high ranking positions and the jobs in general.

      @patriciaalbornoz1347@patriciaalbornoz13475 жыл бұрын
    • Patricia Albornoz actually women dominate many fields, saying “few fields women dominate” is actually incorrect. Of course, men do dominate more fields than women due to more men working than women, but there are quite a few fields that women make more money than men.

  • I've worked in the fashion photography industry and let me tell you, the only people getting paid is the actual magazines from their advertisers and the modeling agencies who hire out the models. The models, hairstylists, makeup artist' and photographers get peanuts if anything at all. All the magazines offer is 'exposure', hence they get free work from everyone and publish that work next to pages filled with advertising. And, more and more they rely on amateurs that are dying to get in the magazine and therefore are more susceptible to getting conned by the magazines into doing it for free with the promise of fame and fortune. No other field is this more prevalent than in the fashion industry. Less than 1% actually make andy kind of money to make a living off of. The magazines, modeling agencies and an extremely small amount of models scattered around the world are the only ones that make the real money. Everyone else is doing it for free or little to nothing at all. And, every day, little Billy and little JoAnne are being signed to modeling agencies at 12-15 years old, being told they'll be on the next cover of Vogue. Meanwhile, soccer mom watches a few KZhead videos and buys a $2000 DSLR with a $1500 lens and thinks she's the next Annie Leibowitz. And, hairstylist's and MUA's are spending all their part time job money on the latest brushes and hairblowers just to compete. As you can see in this video, most models go into HUGE debt with these agencies who promise to get them paid work on a regular basis but, ultimately they walk away with nothing,.....even after being on the international cover of Vogue Magazine. Bitter? No, not at all,... just wiser.

  • Largely in part to the greedy agents! It's all a scam! The models apartment fees (ridiculous!), plus the enormous amount of costs for the agency handling the model is outrageous. I've been there. There are a handful of male models who do well, if they hit a big Advertising campaign, or are working catalog models, but it's rare, and especially now that the market is saturated.

      @obi_the_president@obi_the_president7 жыл бұрын
    • obi_the_president dude having facial features THEY think you need for being a model does NOT mean that you are actually great looking. Like this guy... he looks very very normal even ugly but he got the height and body and the face for doing what he do. It works anyway. Now imagine the same face and body but 5.6" tall. He would NEVER be the same model and get the same hype and jobs like a 6ft. Thats the brutal truth in this business. So much for "features"

      @obi_the_president@obi_the_president7 жыл бұрын
    • obi_the_president at least give me an intelligent reply. No instead you gave me a very stupid one saying they got the "features" As far as I know there are measurements of a good looking face but you don´t need to measure a good looking face since.all you have to do is looking at one. I see a ton of ugly models but they are model mostly because they got the size. If you got a good makeup artist and good stylist... pretty much anyone could be a model.

Those dudes are from different social classes, it seems. And for some of them becoming models will be easier than for the others. Social mobility in the US is not that great.

    • Sorry dude but you got no idea of this business as I see. Your not the one who really chooses where to stay. Its the agency which does that. And if you get send in a city you have over 20-30 castings a day. No fucking time to search for a cosy, comute and cheap appartment. You need to be central and reach the adress your given fast.

    • Mads Mikkelsen Sometimes you have to live in a cheap dump of an apartment, dude. If he doesn't like his agency apply for another. This guy wants to have a sulk at how bad he has it, he has so much freedom to make change in his life.

      @edawhg@edawhg7 жыл бұрын
    • I get you dude and I would do the same. But the model business doesnt work that way. If your not in an agency you dont get a job. So first you need the agency. The agency then sends you somewhere and places all the models at one apartment and let them pay it back when they earned money. Theres no choosing.
