Labour's Gaza Betrayal with Owen Jones

The Labour Party is en route to form the next government of the United Kingdom with what most analysts describe as a landslide majority. The Conservatives have resided over a failed government, with Brexit, economic crisis and poor public services now associated with the Rishi Sunak’s lacklustre government. Labour’s leader, Keir Starmer is comfortably ahead in the polls and it is now openly stated that the tories may be out of government for a generation.
Yet on Gaza, Labour policy has been horrendous. It has given a green light to Israel from the very start of its genocidal campaign, with its frontbenchers including David Lammy, Wes Streeting, Emily Thornberry and Lisa Nandy making it very clear that they supported a siege of Gaza or the absolute right of Israel to self defence. Labour continued this position despite the carnage and despite the interim judgement by the ICJ that clearly stated Israel was committing a plausible genocide.
I have visited many Muslim communities in towns and cities across the UK and it is clear to me that our anger is palpable. There is a consensus forming that we can no longer vote for a party that has given the green light to killing on an industrial scale. To help us make a case against Labour, I have the pleasure today to speak to probably someone who is the most qualified to discuss the party, journalist and commentator Owen Jones. Owen has been a principled campaigner for Gaza and recently made the unprecedented move to leave Labour. He now calls for an alliance of independents and progressives.
Owen Jones is a Guardian columnist and the author of a number of book including The Establishment - And How They Get Away With It

  • Wow. Great to see Owen Jones on here. In fact, its quite amazing that he, as a white, gay atheist, has arguably been the best Western journalist when it comes to this issue. He's put many Muslim public figures to shame by comparison. May Allah guide him to Islam.

    • You’re a single issue obsessive then. You’re a member of the British public, not a citizen in Gaza. You can hold your opinions on what Isreal is doing, but that is not what the British government is for. Voting Labour doesn’t mean you don’t have sympathy and strong emotions about Gaza. Voting Labour means you care about making the country a better, more equal place. You need to stop blaming kier Starmer for not being your perfect Middle Eastern saviour. That isn’t his job. He wants a cease fire, he’s a human being with a family.

    • I think the Israeli lobby has put a crap ton of money into attempting to remove the LGBTQIA 's support of the Palestinians. My home country of Iraq, which never had any anti-LGBTQIA laws (despite having discrimination and fostering an overall dangerous environment for that community) now, all of a sudden, in 2024 has decided "Let's have laws". It's clear why this is, this isn't the work of the Islamic extremists in the country, it's the work of a foreign western government attempting to paint Israel as the only safe haven for members of that community in the middle east. Of course, that's something every idiot Islamic extremist always falls for, and this is how the people with the righteous cause end up losing public support. They had it because of the world's humanitarian views, and when they're painted as inhumane it's only natural that they lose this support. Yeah, they have got to wake up because they're being played, just like Putin, but hopefully unlike Putin, they'd wake up.

Labour have only once had two terms in government, since the war. This was because Tony Blair was such an accomplished liar, and cheat. Only Sad Dick Khan has these qualities in abundance. Furthermore there is no such thing as a 'thinking Muslim'. This is a contradiction in terms.

An even crazier fact is that Israel offered Ratko Mladic 'assistance' in arming and training the Serbs in the most efficient ways to cleanse the land of 'troublesome Muslims'. It was all noted down in Mladic's personal diary during the war. Israel is at war with all Muslims around the world.

  • I am subbscribed to both Jones and Galloway. I am going to go ahead and defend Gorge Galloway becuase I think he wasn't very positive here which I am actually surprised becuase I like both. I believe both Owen and George are more similar than different but the difference is that George doesn't really care what you say, he doesn't debate, he says what he knows and what he believes at that time with the information that he has, no debate, he crushes you before you even have a chance to speak, that's one thing I noticed, and that does not make him a typical politician that most are used to, he speaks the truth regardless how you feel about it or not.

However, I have noticed even Sami hamdi isnt a big fan of him either. Can any Brit clear this up for me whats the catch with George Galloway?

  • Anyone that believes a labour government offering no change with a missive majority will be better than a tory government with a massive majority should lose their right to vote. Our first duty in a democracy is to make an informed vote. Our political system FPTP and government held to account by an effective opposition is meant to deliver a balance. Huge majorities smash that balance and so smashes our democracy. We need to put pressure on and limit labour by voting other than the main 3. Continuing to vote red team to get blue team out followed by blue team to get red team out will change nothing for us, never has and never will.

  • Seems to me like the UK has a Uni-Party problem just like the USA. Doesn't matter what the either/or choice is, they're both beholden to the powerful oligarchic powers in the background that pay the politicians for their fealty. I don't listen to Owen as much now because I got his message rather quickly, so an occasional check-in on his channel, is enough for me. Nice surprise to seem him here because he's in calm conversation with you, without being triggered by others. So THANKS for this. Outstanding work.

  • In the lead up to the 2017 election the media were saying one thing but seeing the crowds chanting for Corbyn and meeting and talking to people (particularly young people) I wasn't convinced by either the media nor the polls, in fact one of the most reliable polls predicted N.O.C., I remember saying to one young woman Labour voter we could win, she said no way, but it was only a few thousand votes and another week or so and I think Labour could've won, and the U.K. would be a better place today.

    • @@nk7274He also has very problematic (in my view) opinions on reproductive health and abortion rights, where he’s very much aligned with the Christian far-right of the Republican party in the US; as well as having said many anti-trans things (despite claiming not to be anti-trans). These may or may not be issues for you, but his strongly socially conservative stance very much clashes with my own socially progressive set of beliefs, which are about embracing, supporting, normalising, and fighting for the equality of and against the marginalisation of people of minorities; whether their minority grouping is from an ethnic/religious/sexuality/gender/gender-identity/disability status (and many others I’ve forgotten here!) position! I’m a member of a couple of those minorities myself (bisexual, neurodivergent - as well as a few less fundamental minorities, like being a woman in tech, and a person on the left who’s willing to speak up on those issues!); but that’s almost by-the-by, and I don’t stand up for those aspects any more than any of the others I mentioned (especially since in our current society it seems like Muslims or Arab or trans people are much more maligned and marginalised groups than those I belong to, so that’s where my focus is naturally drawn to). I’ve definitely got off-topic of George Galloway here… but one more thing I haven’t mentioned that I find problematic with him is his tendency to be quite nasty towards his opponents - just look at his treatment of the Naz Shah, the Labour candidate in his Bradford West constituency in 2015. One comment I just read from him in double-checking some of these facts was that he’s not very kind, and I can’t find any way to dispute that. Without a doubt, his views and speeches on Gaza are wholly correct, and he is indeed one of the few MPs to speak clearly and freely on this subject, and for that I do support him.
