Comedian Bassem Youssef on the Israel-Gaza war, the Arab Spring, and why we can’t change the world

2024 ж. 1 Мам.
1 452 132 Рет қаралды

Bassem Youssef thinks that he’s come on the wrong podcast. “People in power don't really care about any of our suggestions to change the world”, he tells Krishnan Guru-Murthy, “because if our ways to change the world affect their interests, they will stop you.”
And he knows what he’s talking about, having fled his home country of Egypt after his TV comedy became no longer acceptable to the authorities there.
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
Bassem started his career as a heart surgeon, then moved to political comedy in response to the 2011 Egyptian Revolution, taking on the ruling elite in his country. His political satire show, ‘Al-Bernameg’ was the most watched show in Egyptian TV history, but soon became a thorn in the side of the authorities there, forcing him into exile.
In this episode of Ways to Change the World, Bassem Youssef talks about his view that Israel should be held accountable for the war in Gaza, how the Egyptian revolution was a turning point in his life, and why he feels disillusioned with the West's "lecturing" on human rights and international law.

  • As an orthodox jew, I condemn the terrorist acts and war crimes of Israel. I support the creation of a free and independent Palestinian state. This will end all the violence. As Jews we need to accept that Israel is the occupying force and we need to do the right thing and give Palestinians their own independent state free from Israeli interferences. CRITCIZING ISRAEL ISN'T ANTISEMITISM!!! JUDAISM HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ZIONISM !!!!

Gaza had no Jews in it since 2005! Hamas, instead of using the $ they received to help their people and build infrastructure instead built terror tunnels and use civilians as humans shields.

He talked about the confusion we all are in, he talked about why we don’t have democracy and the role of west into this, he talked about the new world order and how scary it is, he talked about unjust and unfairness, he talked about inhumane acts of west and most importantly he talked about the evil of the world, Israel! • That's the worst thing? What if people don't congratulate them, a two-state solution is reached, yet the war rages on, considering the Palestinian position is that the whole of Israel is a settlement, but now they have a lot more ability to bring in weapons with greater strength and it breaks out into a much larger conflict? Would that not be worse than what you proposed? What if they are congratulated after Hamas is routed, Palestinians reject to continue these types actions, they elect a peaceful group that uses all the aid given to it to build infrastructure for Gazans and the next 20 years are peaceful as opposed to the last 20 years? Would that still be the worst thing, in your view?
