  • Nic Dowd. Man, I remember when the Caps traded for him. Jay Beagle, the capitals 4th line center for YEARS, had just been let go. And frankly, I was very sad to see it. Beagle was the type of player who was really solid defensively, and was always always always giving all that he had to give. Dude was always blocking the craziest slapshots. But, alas, good things must come to an end. Enter Nic Dowd. Dowder has been every thing you could ask of your player and more. Guy brings attitude, a little bit of snarl, blocks shots, fought in a line brawl against the rangers, and wins face offs. He's been a great player

    • No shade to Joshua but with the hype around his line and how our 3rd line is one of the best he’s not underrated if anything perfectly rated imo

      @Connor-iy8sw@Connor-iy8sw2 ай бұрын
    • @@Connor-iy8swThe value of the 3rd line is not about their offense as much as it is how the lines are constructed when Joshua is in the lineup. They have tried shuffling people in the bottom 6 since the injury and it hasn’t worked out great for depth offensive production OR defensive play. It’s about the trickling effect Joshua’s presence has in the lineup that is, to me at least, underrated.

      @LSA30@LSA302 ай бұрын
    • Shannon picked Joshua as Vancouver's underrated guy before the season started in the last edition of this video. But since then, he's no longer underrated. He's talked about constantly. It was a very good pick in hindsight!

      @mat5473@mat54732 ай бұрын
    • @@LSA30 oh absolutely yes. With him out that line is not the same 100%. But to me if Miller has an off night the team doesn’t look the same, sometimes others pick up his pieces but there’s been a lot of games where he plays bad and the team completely flops. Like under/over/perfect ratings are subjective based so I could easily be overlooking and under looking things but from how Miller has been from Game 1 to now and rarely gets looked at (even when he led the NHL barely any coverage [yes start of season means squat but still]) he has my vote

Toews I think is fairly rated around the league. People are talking about him as a pick for Team Canada, that's not the kind of player who flies under the radar. Most people know how good he is.

    @Cruxvae@Cruxvae2 ай бұрын
  • Michael McCarron is a nice redemption story. When he got drafted in the first round by Montreal (i.e. 2013), he got asked, the usual trick question, to compare his game to one of the actual NHL player. He answered that his game was similar to Milan Lucic. That was back in 2013 and Milan Lucic's game was on a downward trend. He got flak for that. The guy worked hard, mostly at the AHL level, and now, he is resurfacing at the NHL level; good for him. Similarly, for the last two years, each time I see the Blackhawks, I am surprised and, happy, to see a similar story with Jarred Tinordi. Another Habs first round pick (i.e. 2010), that never solidified his position with the Habs. In both cases, these guys kept working, mostly in the minors, and now, they are both reaping the reward of their hard work at the NHL level.

  • For Pittsburgh Marcus Pettersson is having a pretty underrated season. He’s probably the most steady D-man when we’ve had this year. Couldn’t have gone wrong either if you said Drew O’Connor. His overall play is just improving so much, I remember a couple of years ago during the preseason and I said if this dude can figure out how to utilize his speed because it seem like he just wanted to go as fast as he could every time he got the puck on his stick and he kept losing control of it. Looked like his hands weren’t keeping up with his feet. Reminded me of Martin Straka in his first year. Got some good size. He’s got the speed it seems like he’s figuring out when to slow down and speed up that shifting of speeds is what I’ve noticed the biggest improvement. I think the goal totals will improve in the coming years. It might sound a little crazy right now to some people but I really seriously think this guy could be a steady top 6.

  • For Pittsburgh (I know this seems ridiculous from an outside pov) its easily Tristan Jarry. Fans HATE this guy to this day, even when he is providing such a good on ice product. His history of inconsistent play outweighs that for a lot of people ive talked to and its so unfair in my opinion. We barely deserve to be in the playoff discussion as it is this season I can guarantee you without Jarrys contributions we'd be convincingly bottom of our division. Without the 6 shutouts we'd already be 2nd to last in the metro and I feel like the pens deserved to lose most of those games but Jarry won them. On top of that the amount of times hes kept the scoring far below expected just for the pens to do absolutely nothing with the opportunity this season is infuriating when you see it happen. Especially against teams Jarry has shut out somewhat recently its like our entire defense just turns off because surely Jarry has it in the bag. The story of the Penguins right now is the dedicated few making up for the lackluster majority, Jarry is one of the few.

  • I’ve been telling anyone who would listen that Vincent Trocheck was a bonafide stud since he was in Plymouth with the Whalers before he was even drafted. That team was loaded, but even on that loaded team that lost in the finals the year in talking about to Hershey IIRC, you could see Trocheck was just better than anyone else on either team. He was so fast and so dangerous and all of a sudden he’d disappear in the offensive zone and you’d see a teammate flip it to seemingly nowhere and here comes Vince Trocheck to snipe it home. He’s super good at being elusive in the offensive zone and getting to the scoring area with enough room to get it to him, he can make plays, he’s quicker than he looks and he’s got a shot that’s tricky to pick up and accurate. I’ve wanted him in Detroit since day one and it seems if that ever happens it’ll be too late in his career to see his peak but man he’s good and now everyone is seeing it since he’s doing it on broadway.

Since you used Noesen last time for underrated Cane though, I get selecting Burns as the least appreciated. I'd probably have gone with Staal however as many who start analysis with "how many goals" would miss what Jordan means to the team.

  • I think you defended your reasoning for Miller well. Noah Juulsen has really impressed me this year. If he keeps it up i think he could be a good #5/6 defensman next year

  • I like this topic. Shout out to all the D who done get recognition. People underestimate most D in the league because they don't put up points (with exceptions of course)

    • Poise at the blue line, ability to keep pucks in the zone, and consistently getting your shots through from the point are all huge things that don’t appear in the stats. Those were the kinds of things that made Lidstrom a great, beyond the points. Underrated Dmen are often good at those things without it necessarily leading to points for them. They just make the right plays in the moment. Tortorella spoke about the NHL being amazingly skilled, but dumb. Shot selection is one area where that is evident. Not timing the shot with the screen when you have time. Firing a shot high and wide from the faceoff circle that rings around and leads to a chance the other way. The smart Dmen don’t make those mistakes as often.

  • Forsling was easily the right choice for Florida, man when you watch them closely every game, it's just wild how solid and consistent he is defensively, and how many times he bails us out after a dumb mistake. He almost never makes mistakes himself, he barely takes penalties which is great since he's amazing on the PK. Might honestly be the best waiver pickup ever? He's gonna be tough to pay this offseason.

  • Alex Lyon might be underrated throughout the league, but amongst the Detroit fanbase he is incredibly appreciated. He's a hilarious and goofy guy as well.

  • I agree that Pinto has brought a boost to Ottawa, not only with his play, but also his personality in the dressing room. He always comes across in interviews as a very upbeat guy, which a struggling team could certainly use. The only silver lining to his suspension was that the team was able to keep Joseph, who, after a poor season last year, has bounced back and been pretty good this year. At the start of the season, because of Dorion's cap mismanagement, in order to sign Pinto they would have had to unload a salary, and most fingers pointed at Joseph, figuring that they'd have to also include a high pick just to get another team to take him. Having already traded away (or forfeited) a couple of firsts, that was something they could ill afford.

  • interesting that a couple of days ago you mentioned Adam Fox as underrated for the Rangers. But, I think Trochek is right, because if there is one major difference between the Rangers of this year to last, its winning faceoffs.. Gallant never seemed to stress it, Laviolette definitely does and Trochek has been the best FO man on the team..

  • Personally I would say the entire third line for the Canucks of Blueger, Garland and Joshua who is currently injured is underrated. That line has been phenomenal this season and there have been games where the only reason the Canucks won was because of that line.

  • I'm an Oilers fan who will take any reason I can to hate the Canucks, but I LOVE JT Miller so much. Love everything about him. While I'm here I will mention that the entire defensive core has been underrated. Go look at the stats: they are a top 10 defensive team and it's because everybody on that defense has stepped up defensively.
