Nestled in the heart of the Great Lakes region, the Midwest state of Michigan lies on the border with Canada. Home to more than 12,000 lakes and more beaches than the country’s entire Atlantic coastline, it’s made up of two large peninsulas and several scenic and secluded islands. While the state is defined by its wealth of waterways, much of it is coated in endless forests and wilderness. As such, there are loads of great outdoor activities to be enjoyed, with hiking, camping and sailing all popular. Here’s a look at the best places to visit in Michigan.

    • agreed did that trip with my mother. We started at a cottage we spent summers at and drove along Lake Michigan past Petosky, Traverse city. We crossed the Mighty Mac, went to the Soo, Tahqumenon Falls, Paradise, and the Shipping Museum. Can't remember were we stayed the night but we went to Mackinac Island for a day, and then drove down to Alpena. spent the night there with friends, and then we headed down Lake Huron shore to Standish then across and down to Mt Pleasant for the night with another friend, then back home. I think it was 4 days, I was 12 and am approaching 60, so it's been a long time but it was an awesome trip

  • Loved the video. Mackinac Island, Saugatuck, Grand Rapids, Holland, Sleeping Bear Dunes, Traverse City, Detroit and Ann Arbor are all amazing places. Did you say that Michigan has more beachfront than Calfornia or the entire East? I will need to double check that. I would add Dearborn because it has two of the great museum attractions in the world: The Henry Ford (you can sit in the Rosa Parks bus and see the entire history of priceless cars displayed in chronological order) and Greenfield Village (has Edison's laboratory and is the place where you can ride a Model T).

Going up to pictured rocks I never seem to have enough time. Lots of hiking to see things. Chapel Rock is like a half day hike there and back. Bring food, water, and toilet paper. If you get up by Sleeping Bear South of Empire there is a ghost town Aral with excellent beech and old growth forest. Drummond Island is awesome. A true jewel and a 4x4ing must. Fossil ledges if your a fossil hunter is awesome. Number 1 should be Isle Royal Island. Mackinaw Island is best experience in the winter going across the ice on snowmobiles. A lot of the construction on the island is did in the winter.
