  • This episode was made before the before the smart phones and the explosive growth of social media. In the 14 years that passed, we can text, talk, and video on the numerous platforms on phones, we can have access to the total human knowledge in the palm of our hands. Thanks to inflight wifi, we can literally do all that from anywhere in the world, even over vast oceans. I find it amusing that for years now, I have used my phone for everything, except making actual phone calls. It makes me wonder what the next 10 years are going to hold.

  • "The leak in Churchills toilet needed to be plugged" referring to the secret telephone installed in his lavatory that was being listened to. Best line ever...

  • I'd love to see SO MUCH MORE of this sort of doco. Histories of every and any thing tech/mechanical/science related etc. Jeremy Clarkson - you are so enjoyable to listen to. You clearly have a natural curiosity, as do I. I seem to have picked a copy with Russian subtitles...I lived in Russia for 2 and half years but can't keep up with even reading the subtitles...I'm making this point because I'm wondering where a cleaner-image video copy is - an original.

  • An insight into the laying of the first transatlantic cable would be a documentary in itself.

  • No mention of Philipp Reis, who inventing crucial parts of the telephone, long before Bell and/or Gray. And invented the name „telephone“.

  • The winner is the one who actually develops a working product people are willing to pay for. Almost every famous invention had multiple origins and the credited inventor usually worked with others. Whenever Antonio Meucci is discussed an of fashioned telephone is always shown, but in fact he created a speaker system for his house and not an actual working product. Likewise there were pervious versions of the telegraph but they weren't nearly as good as Samuel Morse's.
