Chapter 4: Trying to save a huge, historic stone wall from collapse
One of the side walls of the magnificent stone terraces in front of the chateau is collapsing and we urgently need to take steps to try and save it.
We live in a medieval castle with a huge, derelict estate in southern France. Follow our ambitious garden projects, from vineyards to formal gardens, tropical plants to self-sustainability. Our project is enormous and our enthusiasm contagious. We'd love you to join us.

Marc had on SHOES and gloves and long pants - and a coat! Was there an Arctic front? I love seeing all you are doing on the estate and how the terraces are coming together. Amy, you and Marc have so many amazing skills. The perfect people to restore and reenergize the chateau and its environs. And Clement. He passively sits on the digger like, "So, isn't this normal for a toddler?" ❤

Nearly had welded chicken for dinner but he managed to avoid it. 👍🏼 It’s interesting to see how each project is progressing, it’s getting harder and harder to find skilled tradesmen these days, technology is stealing them away at an alarming rate.🙋🏼♀️

Seeing the wall from all angles really gives perspective to the enormity of the job. It must have been an amazing site when it was brand new. I enjoy both of your channels and know it is an ordeal producing them. You guys have those two lovely kiddos to deal with and they are far more important than the entire estate. I have to chuckle quite a bit and understand the impulse to just club them. I went through that with two sons who are amazing men today. By the way, you could always eat the chicken.

Great video Marc (and the support team of course). When you do your next rod, I suggest you just cut the head off completely and then grind both the bolt and the rebar end to a truncated cone shape. You will find that much easier to weld because you can put both pieces into a piece of angle iron to align them while you tack them. It will also be stronger. That fowl certainly has a death wish of some sort. None of them are overly endowered with brains.

That wall is beautiful and important to save for sure! I wondered whether a threaded rod would work, instead of having to rely on welding? Just curious, I adore Clement - he's so much like my son was at that age :)

This is a monumental, medieval stone wall requiring machinery to move the stones they’re so large. We use a local stone mason for important walls such as this because he has a lifetime of experience based upon generations of inherited knowledge of how walls were built in a particular style in this area. As outsiders and amateurs we couldn’t possibly do a job like that as well as him. Proper stone masons shape stones with tools, they have huge knowledge of the engineering required to hold back the amount of earth this terrace contains, and they can render it as close to the original as possible. I don’t know what the others rebuilt or why but our ethos here is to restore this ancient building and gardens with historically sensitive techniques. We even won a National award for our approach!

I really love this and you two are the sweetest kindest mother and father I love the way he just you guys take the children with you involve them and stuff you're making memories with them that they'll never so is the Coach House in the castle the only buildings on the property and how many other outer buildings do you have
