  • It's just shocking how quickly and easily a fire can begin and become catastrophic. Such a shame. You are a lucky man to have Stephanie as a friend, especially with the age barbs! She's a very good sport. Boys are cute and funny. Next spring the garden will be so lush and beautiful.

    @MAC-op5fc@MAC-op5fc26 күн бұрын
    • Yeah, the one closest to my home took less than ten minutes to become catastrophic and within 20 you could no longer safely enter that floor because of the massive smoke. The owner left the room to make himself some hard-boiled eggs for dinner and when they were done the entire room was up in flames. In the end, two rooms and the hallway were a total loss with a giant hole in the roof above (in December) and a large number of rooms on the same floor suffered massive smoke damage (smoke from a house fire turns everything pitch black and it's hot enough to melt plastics. It's also extremely toxic). Three (!) floors below suffered water damage, although the ground floor only got a few drips in one room.

      @Ragnar8504@Ragnar850425 күн бұрын
    • Apparently it has gotten a lot worse over the last decades. I remember once reading that in the 1940 it would have taken about 12 minutes for a fire to take an entire room. Nowadays it averages out at less than 5 minutes. The reason is that nowadays many the textiles in a home are polyester or a similar type. Which is all essentially plastic and thus highly flammable. Whereas back then it would have been more natural fibers and especially the rugs would have often been made of wool. Not anymore in the 70s or whenever it was that Dan‘s place burned down, pretty sure there was a lot of polyester going on there as well. But a few decades earlier you had a much higher chance of escaping a fire than nowadays, apparently, especially when living in a brick home and not a wooden or half-timbered one. Which is why smoke detectors are so important, so that at least you notice as early as possible.

  • It's amazing you are finding out the history of the chateau and the police report regarding the fire(s). I could not help but think that these events ultimately led you to owning this chateau. Less damage may have been repaired or another owner purchasing the property rather than leaving it abandoned for so long. You had quite the crew helping out today and that is what is really important.

  • When I do bulk planting I have a drill bit that does the quick digging for me. It goes on the end and takes a second or two to drill a hole and then drop in the plant, pack back around, and repeat. The drill bit looks like a mini version of the devices used to drill post holes. I found it on Amazon. The garden would be a great place to use drip hoses. They are easy to put together and can be gravity-fed from an IBC tote for water collection. I put a large tarp out when it is going to rain and the gravity feeds the water down the tarp to a horizontal gutter which feeds into the tube that goes into the tank. Those IBC tanks hold 350 gallons each and are easily found in bulk online on places like Craigslist.

  • I recently had to end my support after four years to Chateau Diaries due to a job change and financial constraints. I hoped for an email welcoming me back when things changed. Absolutely no response. Dan, you have moved beyond Chateau Diaries as I will.

    • I was a Patreon for about 2 yrs, higher tier. I asked one question in 2 years, was attacked by Caroline Gooder, which we all know is one of them, so I cancelled my membership and stopped watching her. If you have nothing to hide, why to delete and ban everyone that asks a question?

  • Smart work getting a garden in while still working on the chateau. It will grow with the renovation and when all is done you can sit on one of your balconies and admire all that you have accomplished. I very much enjoyed the efforts of the apprentice gardeners and the instructions on how to plant were excellent.

  • That was really interesting! The former lady of the house was very lucky she woke up instead of simply passing out in her sleep from the fumes! Smart woman escapimg like that as well! I was wondering if Stephanie was going to visit soon! Your boys are so darling helping with the planting. 😍
