Jimmy and Mark chat with cartridge-man, Ryan Muckenhirn, about a series of cartridges with one of the most iconic silhouettes - the sharp-shouldered Ackley Improved. In this case, we speak most specifically to the .280 AI, one of P.O. Ackley’s earliest mainstream wildcats, and its long journey to becoming an increasingly popular SAAMI spec’d round.

  • The 250 Savage AI and the 257 Roberts AI were both very popular and effective "improved" cartridges. Basically, any round that had excessive case taper and a shallow shoulder angle was likely to benefit more from the AI treatment. One of the main points of the AI process was that the datum point on the shoulder didn't change, so it was safe to shoot factory ammo of the parent case in an AI chamber. That is how most folks created their reloading brass. Some folks feel the 280 AI is the ultimate evolution of the 30-'06 case. I tend to agree. Kenny Jarrett has built many of his fantastic bean field rifles around the 280 AI cartridge. That says a lot.

  • This is my absolute favorite cartridge. Like Ryan, I’m a reloading and gun nut, and could quite literally do these cartridge talk podcasts with him. And he’s absolutely correct in saying this is the ultimate do it all cartridge. I feel so more than the 30-06 and I own and have shot game with both. 7mm Mag performance in a standard action/case and using approximately 10gr of powder less than the Mag to achieve similar velocities is MONEY!

  • .280AI got my attention when I was looking at getting another magnum rifle. Can't remember what article I read, but when comparing it to .280 Rem and 7mm Rem Mag, it was surprisingly close to the 7 mag performance without the recoil. It really looked like one of the most efficient uses of powder capacity without diminishing returns, excess recoil, and with very near 7 mag energies at long range.

The loads I worked up include a 154 grain bullet out of a 24" barrel at 3000fps and a similar load with a 150 grain bullet out of a 26 inch barrel at 3050fps or a 162 grain from the same rifle at 2900. All very accurate.

  • I own a standard 280 Remington in a bolt gun. Love it. It has to be in the running for the most underrated cartridge of all time based on its performance, balance, and efficiency. It is hard to overstate how badly Remington fumbled the execution of one of the best ideas in American cartridge design. I'm guessing that if Winchester had gone .284 when they developed the 270 Winchester instead of .277 Jack O'Connor would have fallen in love with the "280 Winchester" and history would have been changed. The success of the 7x64 Brenneke (almost identical to the 280 Remington in every way) in Europe is further proof of what should have been. I'm grateful for the 280 AI because it keeps the standard 280 Remington alive.

  • The 280 Remington cartridge was once the 7mm Express Remington, NOT 7mm Remington Express! Savage also chambers the 280 Ackley Improved cartridge in their inexpensive rifle to most expensive too. I love my Savage 110 Hunter in 280 Ackley Improved with 22 inch barrel I paid under $500 brand new! Yes, short stubby 22 inch barrel for the 280 Ackley Improved cartridge! I achieve impressive accuracy with great velocities too. I only use 280 Remington brass that I reload and fireform hunting reloads. I've also reloaded the 30-06 Springfield Ackley Improved and 7x57 Mauser Ackley Improved cartridges for over 28 years.

They also for a very short period ran them marked 7mm/06 as when we purchased them at “JC PENNY” one came correct while the other box marked 7mm/06 was actually a 30/06 ! That was one we should have bought as the serial number matched the box but the caliber didn’t!

  • I own a pair of Remington 280 and a pair of Ackley 280…the gain in velocity seems to be about 60 fps on average given similar bullets with IMR 4350. I get 2988 fps with a 145 Barnes LRX. Other powders would probably give you more. One thing I really love about the Ackley is that the brass doesn’t stretch very much with subsequent loadings. You trim your brass less. The 280 Ackley is a fantastic cartridge. It ought to be way more popular. I use a Kimber Montana mainly.

I'm fond of that caliber but I don't own it. However, I was looking for a good used deer hunting rifle for a young man who I had taken under my wing and introduced to hunting. His Mother wanted to get him a rifle for Christmas but asked if I would help. My local gun store owner had a Remington 700 chambered in .280. He let me take it to the range and shoot some factory ammo and evaluate it. It was a shooter for sure! It easily shot sub minute groups at 100 yards. I zeroed it and put the target with the rifle. He was thrilled to get that rifle and still enjoys shooting it to this day. What a great cartridge. Thanks for sharing this Podcast. God Bless.

Since I have a .277 dia and a .308 dia cartridge in my .270 Win and .300 WSM respectfully if I were to get another medium to magnum bolt action rifle I would want to split the difference and go with a .284 dia cartridge. The 280 AI and the 7mm-08 would be my top two choices for a lightweight mountain rifle setup since they perform well and don't recoil like the 7mm Rem Mag, the fire breathing 28 Nosler, 7mm Weatherby, etc.... the 7mm STW is an interesting one. The Kimber Hunter would be a good rifle to have even though I have heard mixed reviews, I can't afford the Mountain Ascent. Glad to hear that Bergara is chambering their rifles in 280 AI now even though they are not too light. Would be sweet if Tikka would. I know Savage does, but both my .270 Win and .300 WSM along with my .17 HMR are all Savage and I want to try something different. Thanks for sharing.

While some of the increased capacity is marginal in some cartridges the Ackley version feeds and chambers better in some rifles. A lot of the Ackley cartridges especially such as the 22-250 Ackley does not stretch as much and require less trimming. • The 280 Remington dose not need improving. If anyone read his book you would know he did not think all cartridges needed improving. He claimed the 270 had a slightly larger case capacity than needed for the bore size. That would make the 280s powder capacity perfect for the .284 bore size. His greatest praise of all his improve cartridges was the 250 Savage AI. Ackley did much testing on case capcity to bore size and blowing up bolt actions to test for strength . Ackley is a good read but many believe the results of his testing is obsolete because of modern powders. I believe that point of view is a big maybe because he used slow burning powders for 50 BMG for large cases like wildcats based on 378 Weatherby magnum. Even Ackley believe there is no majic in shoulder angles. He sited the double radius shoulder the of Weatherby cartridges . Weatherby shoulder shape is a copy of the venturi of a carburetor.

  • Great video. I have a 270 which is my favorite cartridge for western big game. I also have rem 7mm which is my second go to gun. My son keeps wanting me to buy a 7mm-08. But I have analyzed a lot of data and I appreciate your knowledge of the 280 ackley ai and I really wanted to buy one last year. However I can never find ammo for it, so I am glad that I didn’t. Find me a bunch of ammo and I will probably be looking to buy one for a one stop shop western big game rifle. With that said, I sure would like to shoot a 6.8 western.

  • From what I read , Remington brought out the .280 to rival the .270 Win which was super popular at that time , due in large terms because of one man , Jack O'Connor . But they brought it out in their 742 semi-auto , and kinda fudged on their stated velocities because they had to load it down from it's potential because that auto loader wasn't meant for real high pressures . After 20 yrs or so , I'm sure some spanking new V.P. in charge of hype at Remington said , " let's just change the name and do an Add Blitz " , and thus the 7MM Express was born ! Unfortunately , the shooting public was not amused , and after a couple of years it went back to being .280 Rem . P.S. Jack O'Connor was the shooting editor of Outdoor Life magazine , his replacement when he retired was a great guy named Jim Carmichel , who was a great supporter of the .280 Rem . P.S.S. Winchester did the same thing when they brought out the .284 Win in the semi-auto model 100 . I have a friend who's dad bought the lever action variant model 88 in .284 Win , and has used that one rifle for close to 50 yrs , and has taken sooo much game with it . Including some monster Bull Elk . The .284 is very close ballistically to the .280 , and I'd love to see 10 minutes on that round .

I have a 257 AI, it runs about 300 fs faster than the standard version. But that is the exception. The 280 AI doesnt have nearly as much over its standard version. Maybe 100 fs average, 150 fs improvement at the most. The standard 280 is a great round even without the sharp shoulder and the hassle (and expense) of fire forming.

Glen Park was not left handed. So he gave it to one of his mill managers who's son was friends with my dad, and was also neighbor. That rifle was a work of art of the likes I have never seen matched. Not even by Griffen and Howe of Dakota rifles. The stock is drop dead gorgeous. To my knowledge its only firings were from the test fires during its production. I probably bugged my neighbor to look at it about every 6 months over a 10 year span.

  • You really didn’t research the Ackley Improved motivation very well. Ackley wasn’t just some wildcatter. He was a ballistician for the US Gov during WW2, just for openers. He submitted his case improvements to the guv, like our 30-06, but that design wasn’t machine gun friendly, not feeding as well, so it never got any widespread use. The main benefit, or one of the main benefits is reducing case stretch, giving more case life for the reloader. Bullet release was his big theory; and how the 40 degree shoulder made for an improved score in match shooting, as he believed it allowed for greater accuracy and maybe even better bullet concentricity. Ackley was not a fan of most magnum calibers, in terms of barrel life and economy of powder. Overbore; the term he used for many cartridges, was in the derogatory sense. It goes without saying that just to approach his level of innovation, that he was a master gunsmith. Fully capable of doing things like reboring a shot out barrel to the next size up, or sporterizing actions, stock making and everything in between. Gunsmiths come and go without even a ripple, but Parker O. Ackley really made a mark in his field.

    • It was marketing to catch the attention of potential customers and so was using 7mm versus 284 or 280 because it sounded different and more magnum like. Remember this cartridge was initially released right at the beginning of the magnum craze. It was later renamed and re-released when it was put into the 700.

    • @@tbrown91241 Actually the 280 Remington was changed to the 7MM Express Remington in about 1979. The name was changed as an attempt to boost lagging 280 Remington sales. The name changed caused confusion among shooters as many thought the Express and 7 Mag were the same cartridge. The name was changed back to the 280 within a few years. Lastly the model 700 was released almost twenty years before the first name change.

  • Random fact...PO Ackley believed that the .308 Winchester, as well as its sister cartridges, did not benefit from his “improvement” so he left those cases alone in the end. Also, if your going to discuss the history of the .280 in general, start at the 7mm Remington express and 7mm-06 and realize that it is what is modernly known as the 280 Remington. Might help out some that are unfamiliar. Good video guys.

  • So I’ve mentioned how this is without a doubt my favorite cartridge. But there are some little quirks when custom making one of these guns. So Mr. Ryan may be able to help clear up some questions people have on the 280 Ackley Imp. “SAAMI” vs 280 Ackley “Standard”. I built my 280ai with the saami spec reamer on an 03A3 action. A good friend wants to build one using a Shilen Barrel. They use the old “pre2011” standard reamer. For guys who are interested in going either route with the 280 AI and handloading for it, which dies can be used with which specific reamer? I know that one of the chambering is .014” longer than the other and can cause some headspace issues. I believe if you use nosler brass in the old reamer version it can cause an issue. So, currently which manufacturer makes dies for each specific chambering? From my research the only company that uses the old style in their dies is Lee. Everyone else has converted over to the SAAMI chambering, unless you can find dies made before 2011.

    @craigmcmullen231@craigmcmullen2313 жыл бұрын
    • I would love for someone to clear that up too. My father had a .280AI built on a Mauser 98 action sometime in the late 1980's. He used it until he went through the five boxes of ammo that came with it, and the guy that built it went into the witness protection program, or something similar because no one knew what happened to him. I started hand loading about 7 years ago so I fished that rifle out of the back of my safe and started doing some research. Talk about walking into a stirred up hornet's nest. It seems as though Nosler wanted to start manufacturing the .280AI commercially. The first step was submitting drawings to SAAMI for approval. I'm not sure of how much time passed after approval and starting production but eventually it was discovered that there was a dimensional discrepancy between Nosler's SAAMI approved drawings and the original P.O. Ackley drawings. And there were probably half a dozen different opinions on whether it was a problem or not. One of the forums I participated in, which is now closed, had numerous threads about it. I think it was Reloaders Nest. Anyway one of the forum members contacted Nosler and asked them if it would be dangerous if they went to Academy and purchased a box of cartridges, labeled for .280 Rem Ackley Improved, and then tried to use them in their rifle, labeled .280 Rem Ackley Improved, that was 20 years old. The response that he got from Nosler was, "That's not our problem." Since the day I read that I have never purchased a single Nosler product. And I purchase .280 Rem brass and fire form it in my chamber.

      @sascotttx5145@sascotttx51452 жыл бұрын
    • @@sascotttx5145 from what I understand, is that since your rifle was chambered pre saami, you’d want to purchase dies that are pre saami, such as the Lee dies. The way the whole situation was handled when getting the 280 ai saami approved is messed up. There are sooo many discrepancies on the internet saying you can load this or that or use these dies or those dies, it’s a mess. Most die manufacturers do specify if there dies are saami or pre saami. I believe your rifle is old enough you should use pre saami dies and fire form 280 Remington brass to your chamber.

  • I read the cover off PO Ackley s book. He was all about maximum bore capacity. For example ; he thought the 270 Win. was slightly over bore. That would make the standard 280 rem. maximum case capacity for the 7mm bore diameter. The 250 savage was the most improved of the AI cartridges. He did not think cases like the 220 swift was worth improving because very little velocity could be gained. He did believe case extraction was easier and case head thrust against the bolt face was less with the AI.

  • Something Ryan didn't mention is the 280AI gets most of it's velocity advantage over the 280 Remington mostly due to having a SAAMI pressure of 65K vs 60K for the 280 Rem. Equal pressures and barrel lengths is only about 50 fps difference. He's spot on with performance with RL26. My 280 Rem averages 2980 fps with a 160 in a 22" barrel with it so I've no doubt the guys he mentioned are getting 3100 fps in a 25" barrel in the AI.
