  • .25-06 is a beast if you know how to shoot, your definitely not going to shoulder over a elk, but if you are a confident shooter you can take elk all day with neck/heart/lung shots at 500. Deer and antelope are toast, and 75gr hand loads for coyotes are the bomb.

  • I have used 25-06 for years. Good friend uses one too. I have dropped 2 moose, 4 black bear, dozens of caribou and 3 wolves. Every one shot with 100gr TSX. Only shot twice at a moose one time to prevent him from dying in the river he was wobbling towards. My friend has had much more luck. He has at least twice the animal count I do. 25-06 is all you need if you use a tough hunting bullet like a partition or monometal (TSX, GMX)

  • I've had a 25-06 with a 26" barrel, zeroed in at 250 yards. Midrange trajectory is 2.9" and drop at 300 yards is 3.5". AT 250 yards it has 1582 lbs of energy remaining based on a Hornady 117 gr BTHP Interlock. Granted, it was adopted as the 25-06 in 1969 but, Charles Newton necked down the .30-06 Springfield cartridge in 1912 to create the original wildcat that became the 25-06.

  • I invested a whole 205 dollars in a used Remington 700 ADL 25-06 in 1981, and can’t even count the animals it has dispatched never had a deer take a step after being hit. It’s been sighted in at 200 yards, with a 3 shot group you could cover with a quarter… and in 2022 my oldest son took a prong horn at just over 400. It’s definitely an underrated cartridge.

I put a rather cheap Burris 3-9 X scope on it, bought two boxes of 117 gr ammo, sighted in, and killed three cow elk, three muley does, four bucks, and two coyotes before I finished that second box of ammo. • I've shot a Howa 1500 in .25-'06 for Arizona Coues deer for a long time. There are scores of excellent cartridges, but the .25-'06 is definitely one of the best for open country game shooting. • Bought a model 70 in 25-06 my lord it’s deadly accurate

    @ohhunter1995@ohhunter19953 жыл бұрын
  • This guy below says it all. Shoots flat like a .22-250, low recoil like a .243, and hits hard like a .270. In fact it has better ballistics than a .270. The .270 got better publicity as Winchester's Rifleman's cartridge. Ballistic coefficients don't matter at hunting distances. BC bullets are not hunting bullets when it comes to terminal ballistics. BC bullets are bench shooting bullets designed to shoot farther than ethical hunting distances. The .25-06 suffers from a lack of bullet variety (specifically heavier bullets) and better twist rates. Not a lot of bullet selection in .25 caliber. The .25-06 is the most underrated hunting rifle cartridge but it sure does excel at taking deer. The old wood stocked Savage 110 in .25-06 was just an awesome rifle. Selling it when young and stupid was a regret. kzhead.info/sun/dNKmeqWeeYmimZ8/bejne.html

      @patrickgriffitt6551@patrickgriffitt65513 жыл бұрын
    • Totally agree...The 25-06 is the most underrated HUNTING RIFLE CARTRIDGE that is way more than just a deer hunting cartridge. I bought my first hunting rifle cartridge in 1981 from a very knowledgeable gentleman who had a license to sell firearms. He opened up 1 of his safes in his home after I told him that I was interested in buying a 25-06. That 1 safe alone had nothing but rifles in the 25-06 caliber. I still have that pretty wood stocked Ruger M77 and I have taken all types of game from small whitetailed deer in central texas to larger mule deer, pronghorn, and 1 cow elk in wyoming. That rifle has also accounted for several texas exotics, feral hogs, coyotes, and prairie dogs. The rifle is accurate and lethal with very tolerable recoil. I am glad that I have kept that rifle because rifles in 25-06 caliber are becoming very difficult to find. Using good 117 or 120 grain bullets for hunting larger big game animals and using 100 grain bullets for medium sized big game animals and varmints, I have only lost 1 whitetail deer after being shot and hit solidly. All other game and varmints shot and hit have either fallen in their tracks or they have never run more than 50 yards from where they were shot.

  • Roy Weatherby's favorite cartridge was the .257 Weatherby Magnum. I killed my first buck with a Rem 700 bdl in 25-06 with a handloaded 120 grain Speer. I am a firm believer in a bullet that does not exit but dumps all of energy inside the cavity. A 22-250 is the quickest killer I have ever hunted deer with! 22-250 handloard 60gr Hornady hp interlock. The first two centerfire cartridges N. Carolina approved for deer was a 220 Swift and the 22-250. **Realistic distances like out to 450 yds 25-06 or 275 22-250.

    • I knew a guy in northeastern Vermont who hunted those big northern whitetails with a 22-250 and I thought he was either irresponsible or nuts. But thinking about it, if you can hunt deer with a 223/556, then a 22-250 with a good bullet makes sense. The parent cartridge, 250 Savage was classic deer medicine in the lever action 99.

  • 25-06 Remington is a deer killing machine. Fantastic on deer sized game. 25-06 was the brain child of Nedner (Needner) and the cartridge was a wildcat until after WW2 when slower powders became available which helped the cartridge out and as its popularity grew Remington adopted it. 100gn bullets moving 3000 FPS and up is nasty and has turned the blood to jello on more than a few deer for me. Also, the cartridge can be loaded with lighter bullets to double up as your varmint and Predator shooting too.

The 6mm rem could stabilize up to 90gr bullet when the 243 could support up to 115gr Bullet I hope the 6mm creedmore has a 1-8. Simple rule longer bullets need faster twist Rates.

  • If you shoot deer in open areas it is really tough to beat. What I think a lot of people miss is the lower recoil than the .270, hits harder than the .243, flatter shooting than most other calibers other than super expensive Weatherby’s. I put down deer very fast if I put the bullet in a good shot. It can put down Elk at reasonable distances. It does not push through brush good at all. No bullet does great but it’s the last gun I take if I might need to punch through brush. Hunting over a big field from a stand….It is ideal. Or mountain hunting where long shots are common. The low recoil helps me to quickly reacquire my target and/or take a second animal before it runs off. Plenty of power to put a deer down fast, with low enough recoil to reacquire my target fast, with enough velocity to not drop much. It’s about the easiest way to kill deer. If hunting in thick stuff I bring a slug gun or a big slow moving bullet.

  • Just found this great video. Been shooting and loading for the 25-06 since the early 80’s. I love how everyone is so worried about 500+ yard performance on game. I’ve spent a few hundred hours at 600+ yard public ranges and one thing I’ve learned is that probably 9 out of 10 people shooting next to me have no business shooting at game past 300. I’ve seen a LOT of shooters that read the articles on how the latest whiz bang cartridge kills elk at a mile so they show up at the range with their precision rifle topped with the $1,500 scope then hold 10” or even 15” groups at 500. I usually hear something about how their going to Montana or New Mexico for an elk hunt and the closest shot they will get is 600+. I don’t have the experience of a lot of you reading this but I’ve hunted with nearly a dozen different outfitters for pronghorn, Whitetails, mulies and elk. With the exception of a cow elk meat hunt and one mule deer hunt, every one of those outfitters frowned upon taking any shot past 300. This is where the 25-06 truly shines. My pet load for years is a max load of IMR 4831 pushing 115 partitions @ 3120. My Styer holds honest 1” groups with this load @ 200. For the Nosler PT haters I have the targets and witnesses 😉. This combo has proven to be devastating on whitetails! I’ve even taken a cull hunt red stag with with the load. One shot behind the shoulder, maybe 10 steps and the animal was down. Haven’t hunted elk in a few years now but when I do, I step up to a 7mm with 160’s or 30 cal with 180’s. Everyone has their own medicine, that’s just what works for me.

    • I hear you dude, cant count on both hands how many times I've been to the range with my 25/,06 or 7mm.rem mag shooting at 3 ,4 and 500 yards cuz that's my personal limit for I have too much respect for the animal to blaze away at it over that range. At 400 with with rifle I can keep my rounds inside a 6 inch circle, plenty good for most hunting situations .If the whitetail, miley or bull elk of a lifetime steps out at 500 I'm covered. So many times guys at the range misjudge range so badly it's ridiculous. I had one guy watch me shoot a 3 inch group ( my personal best ) one day at 400 and remarked how well my rifle grouped at a half mile. I informed him that the distance was 400 but he insisted it was over 800 so I whipped out my lader rangefinder , showed him the range which was 397 yards and heard him mumble that my rangefinder was off cuz he sights his 25/06 dead on at a half mile and If his target is a mile away he just holds on top of the back. GEEZ LOUISE PEOPLE ARE DENSE.

  • Great info. BTW, try pronouncing the 06 cartridges as aught six. That's how it was originally pronounced, for example by my dad, a WW2 vet. Bean fields are a somewhat Southern thing (I feel), where you have an elevated stand on the edge of a soybean field or cotton field. Remember the 250 Savage in the model 99 lever action also, not long range, but a classic deer combo.

I hunt with a .308 cause I'm not a recoil pansy and it its ethical it kills. 25 06 my wife wouldnt even shoot. No way a 25 06 will cleanly kill at over 800 yards not a big game. It's not a good deer round past 400 yards. It's not stable enough especially in the wind it moves like crazy. Been hunting for over 20 years and I know a story when I hear one. Theres a reason the 25 06 never caught on it's not a good deer round for distance. Inside 400 it's ok. Past 400 and especially 800 yards on deer? You obviously cant hunt if your shooting 800 yards on game. If you csnt get within 100 yards of your shot you need to learn to hunt. It's like the 6.5 cm homos now are deer snipers. Learn to hunt and stalk your game not take 800 yard shots with a children's caliber that's not intended for those ranges. That's not hinting. That's shooting at animals. How is that hunting?
