How to Hold Your Breath Longer: a freediving tutorial from a professional freediver
How to hold your breath longer. There are no tricks to holding your breath longer and becoming a better freediver but there are ways that you can train. This tutorial details how to train for freediving, what aspects of our bodies we are training when we hold our breath, specific freediving techniques and the best exercises to maximise your natural freediving ability.
How do I hold my breath longer is probably the most common question that I get asked and the truth is that there is no simple answer. It's also impossible to put all the information to increasing your breath hold into one video so I will be releasing several videos on the topic.

Breathe in a few metres away from visible smoke and just hold it in ad long as you can after that if you're nit sure you're far away enough grab your shirt over your nose and breathe small portions. Usually works for me

Using your 4 min. table (2 min hold, 2 min breathe) I was able to easily hold my breath for 2 minutes, again and again. There were almost no abdominal contractions. Your advice to not push yourself made it possible. I've never, NEVER been able to go over 90 seconds in my life. Thanks!

@@flamewing7680 I can't believe these low figures. I thought everyone could do about 3 minutes? I could as a child, and I virtually never swam anywhere and never practised. The first time is always about 2 minutes, then 2:30, then 3. Just keep your mouth shut, it's not rocket science.
@@lambertovitali3152some people have weaker lungs. I used to be able to hold for over two minutes while swimming, but my lungs got weaker after repeatedly getting sick the last few years. I can only hold for about forty seconds now. Also, everyone is different. No need to be so condescending to people who are trying to improve.

Hi ,thanks for the video,, I consider my self intermediate free diver , recently I did level 2 SSI , maximum depth 30 meter and I'm willing to take it to the next level,, you think I should do this tables? Twice a week and beside that what else I should do as training?
What I do to convince my body to hold its breath longer is don't imagine the feeling in your lungs as the need to breathe, just imagine it as an uncomfortable feeling, and try to forget about breathing. Works for me, and gets the feeling of needing to breath out of my head.

Thank you, Adam. As a 15-16 year old, my record for holding my breath while inactive (lying on the bed) was 4:02. I loved the peace and sensation of not breathing and used to often spend more time underwater than above it when in a pool or lake. The only time I competed in an Olympic Pool, I swam 75 metres underwater (at the same age) ... but I never thought of diving particularly deep. I always battled equalising pressures and my ears hurt. Now that I am an older man, you are inspiring me to return to holding my breath while resting and taking apnoea walks! Your enthusiasm is contagious, and you have inspired me. Thank you

@@KarlSap I am no expert, Creative. I am sure there are KZhead videos that will explain far more than I ever knew. My belief at the time was that it was important to be very fit aerobically. I did lots of calisthenics and distance running and swimming (and other activities). I am guessing that a very fit heart and better hemoglobin blood content means a lower pulse rate and more efficient transfer and use of oxygen around the body. Even at my age and very unfit, my resting heart rate is around 55. It was lower as a teenager. I breathed deeply beforehand ... approaching hyperventilation. Lying calmly and almost in a meditative state is vital ... enjoying the peace and the experience. As the carbon dioxide builds and the body wants to fight to breathe, there is still half a minute to a minute of air and conscious resting if you can relax and learn to 'ignore' the body's reflex. That, actually, is the biggest battle. I also used to practise regularly when walking around ... just randomly holding my breath (e.g. walking past smokers) for 30-60 seconds or more. That becomes an art, especially if you had just breathed out. In short, constant practice, I guess. I hope you can learn good habits from people far more experienced than I ever was. I was entirely self taught :P. Best wishes to you!

Why BS? That is quite an easy jump with just a little mental effort. Practicing the techniques in this video could make just about anyone increase their breath-holds by minutes if they practice.

It has so much to offer. I'm mainly diving off the coast of Louisiana so it's full of oil rigs which hold tons of fish and makes for awesome underwater scenery. I've mainly been chasing smaller snapper but have run across many species. I have so much to learn but have been practicing 2-3 days a week in the pool. Such a rewarding activity.

Hi Adam your videos are great. I belong to AIDA Canada but there's no freediving instruction programs where I live, or anywhere close to where I live. So I train with some people who have their different levels from different places in my country. (I literally have to hop a plane and stay somewhere for a week to get a free diving cert!) and I'm always searching out online references. Your videos are great, I can't thank you enough! I am a mermaid performer in Canada and was one of the first in North America. I've utilized a lot of online research to help me improve my freediving skills. I am not as interested in going deep as much as I am with breath holding and being safe while doing so. (with my work I don't end up going any deeper than a standard aquarium). I have stunted lungs but I've managed to get my static breath hold to 2.30 so far at my best, but after a bad lung infection last year I can't get past 1.47 now. For now, it's a good enough for what I do. I'm either performing in aquariums or I'm performing for filming (have a music video coming out shortly!) so I don't have much reason to go beyond a minute or so. Just wanted to share my weird story and say thanks for all these awesome videos.

Omg I literally just found this video bc I wanted to work on my breath capacity for the SAME REASON! I've wanted to be a mermaid performer for years but I could never hold my breath for longer than 2min static and 1.5min while dolphin kicking across a standard inground pool!

I just made the whole table C02 and 02 and when I finished I breathed for 2:30 and I managed to beat my old personal record of 04: 3 min. with a new personal record of 04:15 min. In fact, I never managed to match my previous record of static apnea until today. Thanks for the video!

Great video and easy to understand. I'm a spearo so this is all good info. I'd love to be able to break that 1 minute mark but seem to hang around 45 seconds just to keep it safe. Deepest I've been is 65ft, that was with a full weight belt so getting off the bottom was interesting. Definitely subscribing!
thanks so much :) If you're diving that deep you may want to take some weight off! haha but I think you're diving in a really smart and safe way. Spearfishing can be risky only because of the amount of things that can go wrong in a dive- tangles, fish reefing themselves etc so I don't think it's a bad thing at all that you dive conservatively. In time you'll easily crack that 1 minute mark

What an amazing video series! I love it when professionals such as Adam are so passionate about what they do that they take time to encourage and guide complete beginners who are interested in the sport. Thanks so much! I'm two days into my training and I had a couple questions for Adam or the community...For the CO2 and O2 tables, is there any danger in doing a table more often than a few times a week? Maybe like doing 5 tables a week. I saw in one of your videos you said no more than 3. All of my training will be dry training as I don't have access to a pool, so I just wanted to make sure that I wouldn't do my lungs or body any damage by doing them more often. It wouldn't be mentally taxing on me as I actually really enjoy doing the exercises. So is it safe to do more than 3 tables a week? And is it even beneficial to do that? Also, should I increase the breath hold portion if I'm getting through the 8 rounds fairly easily? Or should I stay where I started? How often should I reestablish my max hold? For example, in the CO2 table, 50% of my PB is 45 seconds (which currently stands at a rather unimpressive 1:30). . On my first day of training (2 days ago), I did the 8 rounds of the CO2 tables quite easily. Is that how it should be or should I push myself at least a little bit? Say by maybe increasing the breath hold to 50 seconds? Again, I really enjoy the exercises so it's not something that is going to discourage me from going forward with training. Thanks so much for all the great info!

Hey Adam, just getting into this whole thing. May just be my latest FAD, but I really enjoy the science behind this sport and I have been practicing pranyamas just for helping me to meditate after a hard days work. Tried the beginning of your static breath hold training table and manged to do 3 sets of 2min holds with 2 min rests. I was really pleased! I will continue to try and beat this target, I think if I made 3min it would be insane for me:)

A few questions: 1) My max static breath hold is 1:31. Wouldn't it be more beneficial to practice a table with 3-minute intervals? Because a 4-minute interval would keep giving me a full 2-minute recovery which kind of defeats the purpose of the table. Right? 2) Is freediving in a lake any different to the sea/ocean? I live on the coast of the Zurich lake (switzerland) which is huge and plenty deep (100+ metres) but obviously I don't have a seashore anywhere closeby. 3) In the 104m dive video, was there an external light source or is there actually that much light deep down? Also, you are the first youtuber whom I have seen respond to every single comment under his videos, which makes you the most awesome person on this planet. Keep it up!
hahaha thanks Roman :) So at this point in time I think what you need to work on is more your relaxation rather than your C02 tolerance so keep the interval at 4 minutes so that you can have the option of increasing your breath hold times. The difference is that you will be less bouyant diving in fresh water and lakes are usually much colder and darker! haha In the caribbean the vis is so good that there is that much light at the bottom :)

Thanks Adam. Your vids are the best source of rational, professional free diving training I have ever seen, anywhere. I recently did a Free Diving certificate in Panglao, Philippines (Bohol) and it effectively confirmed everything I had already learned from personal experience. But your tutorials take it to another level. I experimented doing progressive breath holds at home in my "sweat patch" workout/training area just to find where my limits are. I can repeatedly breath hold to 3 minutes no problem and my personal best is 5 minutes, but only in a relaxed state (not after any weight training). I also found out what it's like to black out - at home, sitting down and have become comfortable with contractions. Your O2 and CO2 tables appear to be a good way to progress but as you noted, diving really only improves with diving. The benefits of static breath holds have been to find familiarity with contractions and that woozy feeling at the end of a dive just before reaching the surface - no panic, just complete peaceful relaxation. The static breath holds also seem to help with learning to relax and almost get into that "Zen" mode. Does this get better with age? As metabolism slows, we need less oxygen and (at least) one famous free diver (Natalia Molchanova) noted she was better able to free dive as she got older - but she died diving recreationally.

I’m going to keep at it, then try the walking exercises you suggested, then bring it to the pool. I used to be able to swim from one end of the pool to the other underwater no problem... no practice needed. Haven’t been able to do that for a bit. So these exercises were a great find. ☺️

Hi again Adam I just watched this video again for the 2nd time (after the past 1.5yr in the Philippines here in Cebu) ❤🇵🇭❤ I was teaching myself to free dive (with the use of your videos) during lockdown & not long after I arrived here you had just recently been to Bohol (just opposite where I was staying in Cebu)... Sadly I haven't yet gotten to dive there yet (with all the restrictions still for inter island travel) but thanks to your videos, tips & expertise etc. I have managed to dive to a relatively comfortable 10m depth... not "so" deep I know - but coming from never having been even 1m under the surface before (when I came to Cebu from the UK) it was amazing to start getting deeper and deeper, seeing so much beauty in the ocean. 🥰🥰🥰 I got to dive with so many sea turtles and even had a 1 on 1 encounter with a whale shark (completely organic and natural like a scene from a movie!) ❤🧜🏻♂️🐋🐢🐠🐡🐟🦀 At first I was struggling at around 5m to equalise (for a few months)... but after persistance, perseverance and practice I soon managed to go deeper and have no problems now equalizing using the Frenzel technique 🧜🏻♂️❤ Anyway... just wanted to thank you again!... I really love watching your videos and everytime you amaze me and inspire me. I have been so busy the past 6months with house building here. I've a question regarding the training frequency, I can breath hold 6 minutes and a little plus regularly (I'm saying static because is what I love to do and is my focus, I know that is not usual :P ) but in the last weeks I think I'm breaking mentally and physically...Is possible that is due the fact that I'm doing an table, static or dynamic, almost every day (I hope my coach is not reading this comment) and spearfishing at the weekends? What is your previous athletic background prior to freediving and what are you aiming for with your future freediving performance? Almost certainly you are over training but there are some circumstances where breath holding 6-7 days a week is beneficial but to train at that frequency you need to have built up to it slowly over many years and you need to be extremely focused on your diet and nutritional supplements in order not to start breaking down your immune system and other things in the body. I personally have never train at that frequency. There is usually no need.
Hi Adam! First off all thank you for the feedback! My coach is a certified Apnea Academy coach and certified swimming coach, he coached some freedivers athletes with national pool records! I do spearfishing since always (family thing) and since 2012 I stared with the freedive with a 2 and half years stop, I restarted one year ago with the focus to beat the pool portuguese records (6:02 STA, 138 DYN w/fins and 105 DYN no fins), I was competitive swimming athlete for 10 years. Phiysicaly I'm felling really fine, I thing that is not a problem but mentally I think I'm breaking, my coach agree with me and encourages me to get other opinions, I know that I have the skills and capacity to reach my goals but during training my mind is tired and I'm feeling very anxious!! Did you ever felt something similar? Thank you!!
first try i was able to hold for 45 seconds, second was 1 minute, waiting for the 4 minute mark now to attempt a minute and 15 seconds. It helps for me to think of the feeling of needing to breath as just mild discomfort. thanks! Going to a quarry diving area in june.
I used to do competitive swimming for ~11 years, and one of the exercises we did was the table you brought up where you swim in a pool. Unfortunately I don't competitively swim anymore, but I have been recently interested in diving at the local river.
hi Adam, I have been trying to improve my static breath holds, and i started at 50 sec, and only by relaxing more before a breath hold I maneged after a few days to get to do a 1:30 breath holds. I dont think I was improving my c02 tolerance, I think my improvment is only thanks to realxing better and better and slowing my heart rate. after i watched this vid I started doing some training sessions: of 1 min breath hold and 30 sec recovery x5. I noticed 2 thing: - when I hold my breath i get the urge to *inhale* instead of the urge to exhale; I'm not sure that I'm feeling contractions at all... when doing a braeth hold if i inhale just a bit more air after 45 sec i can go longer, and all this seems a bit wierd.... i would love your opinion. - after a session I'm feeling a bit dizzy for at least half an hour, is it okey? am I doing somthing wrong? (I'm not hyper ventilating as far as I know) thanks a lot for the videos, i really enjoy them, I can't wait to do a freediving course :)
Thanks so much :) what you're feeling does suggest that you're hyperventilating but it really could be several things. It's impossible to say without being there. Also I think you need to take a fuller breath....if you can still inhale that means you have not taken a full breath :)

When I static training I wear a %SpO2 - PRbpm monitor and my O2 levels hardly ever drop. Do you think I need to adjust my tables?

I can hold my breath for 2-3 minutes consciously but i randomly hold by breath without realizing it and by the time i notice ive been doing it for quite some time but i can never really measure how long

Same thing happens to me i thought I had some sort of breathe issue.
How do you know you have stopped breathing? If the most you can hold your breath is 3 minutes, you might randomly stop breathing for a minute. But how do you know you did?
@@chiragrulze There is a moment where I notice I'm not inhaling or exhaling. It lasts for about 2-3 seconds . This is longer than the natural pause from switching to exhale. Then I abruptly inhale while also having sort of an uncanny feeling.
