Switzerland has won the 2024 Eurovision song contest.
But the events unfolding outside the venue in the Swedish city of Malmo have taken centre stage.
This year's contest was overshadowed by protests over Israel's participation due to its war on Gaza.

Personally I am against Russia being banned- although the situation is not the same. People, sportsmen, singers should not be punished for what their government is doing. This applies to Israel as well

The Eurovision Song Contest is being accused online of not criticising Israel because of the event's main sponsor, Moroccanoil. Contrary to what the name suggests, this is an Israeli company. Critics on social media say the song festival does not want to say anything about Israel's participation or actions of the Israeli delegation in view of its relationship with the sponsor.

I think it's a shame to threaten a singer Eden who gave a great performance. It's a music contest not a war zone. I was only worried that she wouldn't have the strength to get on stage, hold her own and give her best. But she did. Great song, strong lyrics, vocal performance-singing from her soul. I was moved to tears. And I'm not the only one.

And when police have to go into these areas, they have to go in mob handed. Sweden had an open door policy re migrants and now it is one of the most bombed places in Europe, with gang warfare rampant and with certain sections of the population totally at odd with the Swedes and their way of life, which is liberal, tolerant, and inclusive

Turkey participated in the past but decided not to participate anymore. While Israel is culturally much closer to Europe than Turkey, Azerbaijan or not to mention countries like Syria. Also it's funny that you mentioned colonialism and were disappointed that Turkey is not in Eurovision while forgetting the fact that Ottoman Empire was one of the longest living colonial powers.

I also never condoned Turkey's colonial past, but that doesn't diminish Israel's guilt. Also how is Israel "closer" to European culture? What constitutes European culture in your opinion? By the same logic you should argue that Australia and Canada should be part of the ESC. They're not, because they're not geographically part of Europe just as Israel isn't. That's why I'm arguing the logic behind it is colonial. Israel was a settler colonial project from the get go, which is why it's welcomed at the ESC, even though it's located in the middle east, not Europe.

And lastly, I'm not surprised that you don't know about turkish or arabic colonialism because it doesn't fit the anti-west narrative that is prevalent today. I'll be honest, I wasn't aware that Australia participated, which is wild to me. I don't get the logic of this event anymore. If Israel wasn't a colonialist, fascist ethno state, I wouldn't mind them participating, considering that, as you rightly pointed out, Australia and other non European countries also seem to take part. I take offence with all forms of oppression and genocide, be that by the Turkish, the Germans or the Israelis in this case.
