NEW PS5 System Update: Mic Improvements, Share Screen, Console Lighting Tested & Compared

The latest PlayStation 5 system software update is here after being in beta for a little over a month. This would be our smallest 'headline' firmware so far, where there's only a handful of changes. The DualSense microphone and speaker have seen some enhancements with AI, and Share Screen has new interaction features. There's also a new shutdown animation and brightness options for the console accent lighting. Let's do some on-screen comparisons and see just how well Sony did. As for me? I did not do well. I usually try and prepare these ahead of time, but alas, I've failed. At least Melissa still believes in me.

  • It's actually pretty cool that there is a noticeable difference for the controller. I'm also excited for that share screen option so instead of yelling at my friend while watching their gameplay "TURN AROUND. TO YOUR LEFT. NO YOUR OTHER LEFT" I can just point lol

  • I needed that share screen update so bad! 😅 I got a friend I'm helping in Elden Ring and they do not listen to map directions well at all. Now I can just point it out without needing to join share play and just do it myself

  • A test on controller battery life was about the only thing missing here, but unless you have near identical play sessions during a set amount of days, and then again after charging the controller, and having done the update, I don't know how you could tell a clear difference, time will tell I guess. I hardly ever used my controller speaker, and its mic even less.

  • Looking forward to see what the loudness for the mic via the cursor is like, as well as the button mash deafening, but I’m most hyped for the screen share options! My gf and I are long distance, so sometimes we watch each other play whatever games we gameshare with one another. I definitely wanted more to do while watching her play. :) this is clutch!!

  • The mic update definitely helped a little bit. Moments where you weren't talking it seemed to filter out button presses perfectly, and ofc theres inevitably gonna be some leaking through if you talk while mashing but even while you're talking the filter sounds a bit stronger on the buttons

  • Wish they would add the option to change the start up to any of the classic console start up screens. I would have mine opening up with the ps1 startup screen, that’d be sweet.

  • You forgot the (for me) most important change. When entering rest mode and immediately turning it back on, the opening animation gets skipped. My ps5 now starts up in about 3 seconds after pressing the power button which is a huge bonus, especially when for example accidentally entering rest mode instead of turning the console off

  • Sweet new shutdown screen animation. If only this was the type of shutdown screen animation for the original shutdown screen before the release of the PS5 redesign. Somewhat reminiscent of the buildup animation to the PS5 console design reveal from 2020

  • Biggest problem with non-party chat is the echo. When using mic with randoms in a game I've tried different headsets and it still happens that the other players get an echo (can hear themselves). I make a party chat it is still there sometimes, but is very minimal. Any tips?

  • I wasn’t expecting to notice the controller speaker difference but I actually had to turn it down from max volume, pretty impressive but why couldn’t it be like this at launch? Is it bad for the controller speaker, is the new max loud enough to blow out the speaker? Or did they just randomly decide to turn it up?

  • There is a setting under accessory settings for the controller that turns up the controller speaker volume, did you put this to maximum??

  • Nice to see how it sounds. I have a headset, but sometimes, mostly with friends, I'll play a match before putting it on (especially after showering), or if the headset is charging for a few matches. Audio comes out of it horrible from mics., but it goes in pretty smooth. When pressing buttons, you hear it, you hear it chop your voice, but seems like a plausible temp solution if need a mic. and have no headset on standby. After that update it simply removed the sounds mostly, still made it choppy, but gotta give it to Sony, it's an actual legitimate, temporary, option for a microphone. Whether charging your set, wet hair, or just popping it on for a second to speak to a teammate, it's completely fine. Figured it'd have sounded like trash on the recieving end, but it seemed to have been working.

  • Finally its louder. I have a headphone with a jack port and ofc theres no port on the ps5 so I have it connected to the tv and everytime someone talks on voice chat i have to take them off so i can hear them on the controller. No idea why we cant choose the output as the tv.

  • This update messed up my PS5, and now all my games lag. And yes, it's the update because others have reported the same thing. Also, my PS5 has run perfectly (not an exaggeration) for the first 15 months I've played on it, and the the first time I get on after the update, and all my games are lagging. Yes, both online and offline games lag Yes, There is over 100GB storage (not running low on storage is the point) Yes, I tried a different HDMI Yes, I tried restarting the internet Yes, I turned off my ps5 and back on Yes, I open it and clean it out (it was barely dirty) NO, It's not over heating (it barely gets warm) Yes, I tried a different TV I thought maybe it was the controller update that caused it, so I tried my other controller (that i hadn't updated yet). Really hoping Sony comes out with a fix for this last update.

  • My left stick doesn’t work in the PlayStation menus ever since I updated, I can’t go right for some reason but I can on my dpad, it’s not my analog stick itself cause it works in games just not on some system menus on my PS5. Sony needs to fix this

    • There's actually a LOT of UI changes I've really been wanting. Folders is definitely one of them. The gamelist feature just felt like a poor attempt at adding them

    • At this point Sony are just pathetic idiots for not including it. If you have an iPhone, just create folders based on genre and input your games in each genre. That's what I did.

  • I only play sports games. I heard the audio on Madden 24. But I played Nba2k24, i didn't hear the in game audio. Is it just on certain games? Not all of my games will do it?

  • I was playing Cyberpunk 2077 after ps5 update, and when I was using holo calls and open the Messege menu, the sound poped louder on the controller speaker and I was shoked, like I decreassed the volume below half.

  • I thought we were going to have the option to turn the system light off. I was bummed out when I saw you can only dim it. I hate watching movies at night and the system light being on. Guess I'll stick to putting the movie case in front of the system.

  • Since the update I’ve had two weird experiences that have never happened since launch day of PS5. I had my game freeze then a black screen for a couple seconds then I was on the Home Screen with a notification of a system software error, the game was still running and I just went back into it. After that I had unmuted my controller mic to say something and then went to mute it again and I noticed the mute light did not come on and then the controller just stopped working, I couldn’t get any buttons to work and the only way I got out of the situation was by turning on another controller and forcing the unresponsive controller to shut down. Anyone else have any issues?

    • Me too. Playing Hitman at the time. Same as you ref game closing and system software warning, plus also had a freeze while the game was saving which completely froze the system requiring me to hold the power button in fora reset.
