Kenny Dalglish or Steven Gerrard? Mo Salah or John Barnes? Ian Rush or Bobby Firmino?
These are some of the decisions for Liverpool legend Phil Thompson as he chooses his top 5 players in the club’s history on the latest Football’s Greatest with Jeff Stelling.
Who would regularly lose their temper in the dressing room if Liverpool failed to win in the Premier League?
Why does Thommo think it’s wrong for Liverpool fans to boo Michael Owen?
Who was his favourite out of the modern day front trio of Salah, Firmino and Sadio Mane?
Thommo faces some tough choices as he picks from a cast that has won league titles and Champions Leagues aplenty, and been part of some the greatest matches in the club’s history. Some great players are mentioned, but who makes the final five?

Liverpool's Top 5 Greatest Legends | Phil Thompson 🏆 | Ep 9
Who are your top five Liverpool legends? 🤔
- King Kenny - Ian Rush - StevieG - Mohammed Salah - Alisson Becker
@@RoyHodgson97 where would you ranked Alisson in terms of best PL keepers of all time??
1. Mohammed Salah 2. Steven Gerrard 3. Sir Virgil Van Dyke 4. Michael Owen 5. Allison Players who just missed out: Bobby Dazzler, Sadio Mane and Luis Suarez
@@footballsgreatestpod First for me. Best in terms of ability no doubt
1. Stevie 2. Alison 3. Virgil 4. Salah 5. Bobby
I'm not a Liverpool fan but always love Phil's passion for the game. He was not only a great player and captain but a brilliant coach and his imput on Soccer Saturday is sorely missed.
Phil Thompson has so much love for Liverpool. It is wonderful.
All Kopites on Merseyside share that passion
True red - talks about these players with so much passion, we love it ❤
@@Thai.Farang Your all biased and need to get jobs
@@matthewdoyle3877 Thanks for the advice
Barnes wasn't only a great player, he was and still is a great man, one of my favourite players of all time
A true ambassador 👏
I agree he is a adopted son
👍👍 After his bad injuries, the reinventing himself, the way he kept the ball was 10/10. Totally unappreciated for his passing and keeping the ball. I loved him❤❤
Well said, Thommo about Owen. He was my childhood hero. He saved Liverpool so many times and won them trophies in those dark days. It’s easy to be great when you have a great squad and manager like Liverpool have now but not so when you have an average squad and manager (as was the case with Owen).
Sorry but I can’t agree with Thommo on this one. You simply can’t join united and win a prem, then still say “we” when talking about Liverpool..
I wasn't bitter when Owen joined United because I knew he was washed out.
@@yessi1585Owen gave his best years for Liverpool, won us trophies and was a product of the academy. He was finished when he joined United, he didn't contribute much.
@@jydeade8944 you don’t support Liverpool and say “we”, and join united. Simple
A top 3 or 4 squad and manager is not "average"
Great show Jeff!!!...Wish u, Thommo and the boys were back on Soccer Saturday!!!...What a lineup that really was!!!...👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Yeah thats too male and too white nowadays unfortunatly
My hero when I was young was Terry McDermott and he probably don’t even get in top 20 these days. But what a player he was.
My hero was and still is Phil Neal, 4 European cup medals, great bloke
Amen.
Loved Terry mac, pure class.
Never seen a relationship like Rush and Dalglish. Dalglish would hit a ball into space leaving you wondering WTF? then Rush would appear from nowhere and blast it in.
Yeh I remember that, and the crowd sighing too. Everyone going WTF.
Well what a fantastic watch that was, i'm not a Liverpool fan but this was fantastic. The passion in Phil Thompsons voice was there for everyone to see and here, he is very sadly missed on soccer saturday as is Jeff Stelling. So much so I don't make a point to watch it as i used to.
Just remember the late great Peter Jones commentating on Liverpool during the early 80's, the most common phrase was Dalglish, Rush, Goal!
That's a great idea for a tattoo..... Dalglish... Rush..... GOAL ⚽
For me it is: 1:Dalgish 2:Salah 3:Rush 4:Gerrard 5:Van Dyke
The actor from Mary Poppins?? 😅
Salah over Gerrard? What a bl€%
Hansen is better than Van Dyke .
Yeh I agree, but I’m predjuciced Dalglish, Souness, Hanson, Gary Macalister, Robbo. No other country need apply.
1. Dalglish, 2. Gerrard, 3. Salah, 4. Rush, 5. Barnes
Made room for Salah 👏🇪🇬 Not a bad list, that
There you go, someone else who's hole Liverpool history and love starts with Sir Rodger. (giving my age away) Loved to run out on a Sat evening and buy a "Pink" and see those pictures. What a hero!
Dalglish Gerrard Rush Salah Barnes
So what would you say about Salah if he left under a cloud? Never a legend until the job is done!
@@chriskelly4894so true, Keegen, Owen, Suarez, McMannaman, Souness, all decided to leave and this affects how they are remembered. All great servants, all great players, but with somewhat tarnished reputations.
What an awesome show and just how fit does he look at 82 years young
Love thommo, kirkby hero❤thanks fellas for soccer Saturday over the years. Legends.
Gerrard was a force of nature.
This is Thommos list and im here for it. Need to celebrate ALL our heroes always!
Love it! Who would make your list?
Barnes, at his peak, playing in todays football, with the protection players get, the rule changes, my goodness, he would of been even better. He was my hero growing up, I worshipped him, his poster adorned my walls.
Great player was Thommo, he tells a great story too, Ive been pleased to hear him on talksport recently as well, good football knowledge, great to listen to, good listening to Jeff now as well, I nearly gave up on talksport but stuck it out because of Brazil, Im a early morning delivery driver and it was getting really difficult to listen to a lot of them talksport so called pundits, But Jeff has joined now and with Brazil, Mcoist and great guests coming on Im listening with a smile and more importantly to sport again instead of talkUnited! Cheers Jeff
Beardsley was 1.9 million if my memory serves me correctly
Hi Thommo....do you remember playing versus Dynamo Dresden in the European Cup in the 70ies? You beat us (I am from Dresden and when you played there I was in the stadium as a teenager) 3 times. Once we were close to knock you out.....in 77 we lost 1:2 in Liverpool but drew 0:0 in Dresden. One of our players hit the post once....!! Since then I have been a Reds-supporter like all my football loving friends from those times.
Jeff and the lads were class. Sky replaced a brilliant team of pundits that worked so well together and replaced them with dull as dishwater 'pundits' and now the show is atrocious and unwatchable. Great job sky👏
Never a truer word spoken
Great guest to have on. Forgot how interesting Phil is to listen to.
Top 5: 1 Gerrard, 2 Callaghan, 3 Dalglish, 4 Clemence, 5 Hunt - crackn show with Thommo
Gerrard, Dalglish, Suarez, Souness, Hansen for me. Suarez is there because he was No1 in world, faster to 50 at Barca than Messi, Messi fave partner and, if we'd been at top without awful owners/no dough, he'd have stayed and smashed records.
.... while Phil Tomo himself is a Liverpool Legend...
Not a Liverpool fan, but always dreamed of having a player like Gerrard playing for my club
My top 5 has to be. 1. Gerrard 2. King Kenny 3. Rush 4. Salah 5. Clemence
Tommo, Wow, love the guy and hearing his insight, many thanks ❤
Will never forget watching Phil Thompson at the '74 Cup Final win against Newcastle. It was late in the 2nd half with the game already comfortably won and PT ,a string-bean of a player was at centre-half and he couldn't stop looking back at the celebrating Kop end of the stadium. Time and time again. You could see he was a fan and almost pinching himself at being on the pitch in a cup-winning LFC team rather than standing on the terraces. A vivid memory. What a Captain and servant of LFC.
Pure Legend! YNWA!
A great show - thanks Jeff and Thommo.
Cheers Paul 👏
Fortunate enough to have witnessed many of the players Phil speaks of. I have to say that for me, John Barnes was simply unplayable. You couldn’t get near him. His strength, vision and his goal scoring ability were flawless. Those of a younger generation will have heard of him and seen him on television presenting but let me assure you, the guy was a freak of nature. My mate is a big United fan and I still remember him telling me that he was sick of John Barnes 😂
His inconsistency was shown up playing for England. I never know what people mean by 'unplayable' but he was limited in what he could achieve.
For me: 1. Dalglish, 2. Barnes, 3. Rush, 4. Gerrard 5. Van Dijk.
Great listening to Phil Thompson!
We really have been blessed with some amazing footballers over the years
It's some list isn't it 😅
I agree about Barnes over salah, growing up in that era when liverpool were flying in 80's early 90's winning the double etc. Its to do with Barnes getting the ball and it sticking to is feet EVERY time he ran with the ball. We get the same excitement with salah but the ball can run off is foot and not have the same control as Barnes. Most definitely a hard one but Barnes for me.
Just to correct myself Barnes came after the double win but I'm talking about that era in general
Love this thank you
I'm lucky to have lived while some of the greatest players in the history of football have played for us. YNWA.
So many players could've made the list 😅
Jeff - you should do a separate weekly series on this channel with the old gang (Kammy, Thommo, Charlie, Merse and Tiss) discussing current football topics (much like the first 3 hours of a soccer saturday)
Terrific list from tommo here. All individually superb particularly Kenny and barnsey but one thing sticks out, what terrific team players they ALL were, Rushie brilliant runner and first line of defense. barnes creator, stevie workrate, Kenny everything.
It's the Liverpool way 👏
2 of the Soccer Saturday A Team,When it was CLASS!!!! Now it’s ARSE!!! keep these coming Jeff would love to see Wrighty on here 👏👏👍👍
There is no DOUBT that barnes is ahead of Mo’… Mo is a legend but barnes was something else… should be number 2 actually
You are a legend Jeff!
No Graeme Souness? I'm shocked I tell ya, shocked! 😮
1) Dalglish 2) Gerrard 3) Rush 4) Salah 5) Liddell
My top 5: 1. Dalglish 2. Gerrard 3. Rush 4. Barnes 5. Hansen
No Salah
@@andrewwright4195 Salah has been awesome he really has but football existed before the premier league era and in my opinion and having been a Liverpool fan over 35+ years, I'd put the players I've mentioned above him. Football is all about opinions and they're just my opinions based on the amount of football I've watched over the years.
I guessed 4 out of the 5, Jeff. I thought Big Souey would make the list but Tommo went for his boyhood hero Hunt. Fair enough. Another good episode, enjoyed Tommo's passion.
I'd have to put Graeme Souness in there.
They fell out !
Souness shud definitely be in the top 5. Along with the obvious choices, like Dalglish, Gerrard, Rush. All great players and im not even a liverpool fan.
What about Salah van Dirk allison @@colingeddes2172
I agree 3 european cups 4 titles and 4 league cups aint no joke.
Phil has picked some amazing players for his list and rightly so. However, my favourite player of all time is Emlyn Hughes. The man was exceptional in what he did. He was all over the pitch with his tireless running, breaking up opposing attacks, his distribution of the ball was superb and every so often he would pop up with one of his howitzer goals. Boy, could he hit a ball. I'm not sure if he was in the top 5, but the man was a brilliant player, a brilliant leader. I just had to mention his name.
Jeff, im 30 years old, and even i know comparing Roger Hunt with Callum Wilson is a disgrace 😂
Harry Kane would've been a better comparison.
@@r4h4alno Kane scores many from outside the box
@@TheDPgamer But in terms of a player closer to Roger Hunt's quality. Harry Kane is better.
Sorry to say but Owen as well as Torres and Suarez will never top the legends charts despite undeniable quality because of the issue of loyalty. The difference between top player and legend in my opinion
Owen was at Liverpool for 6 seasons, Torres and Suarez only 3 seasons. Those were picked were like 12-15 seasons.
King Kenny Dalglish. Number 1. 👑 and rightly so. Kenny Dalglish is the greatest red of all time.
No he's not
Told you he'd be on here Thommo from a devastated Chelsea fan congratulations Liverpool

No mention of Robbie Fowler even outside his top 5!
Him and fowler didnt see eye to eye. Read robbies book. There was a training ground incident where tommo accused fowler kicked the ball at him and robbie had to apologise
He got in mine. God for a reason.
@@maureenthomas9758That's what caused Fowler to be sold
Thommo: "Who the f*** is Calum Wilson...? Is he a 'sir'?
Owen said it's either me or Fowler , then when Houllier said Owen ( forcing Fowler out ). He forced his way out of the club ! Owen forced the youth players to play cards ( high stakes ) with the threat of not getting near the 1st team if they didn't .
Dalglish, Gerrard, Rush My top 3
Dalglish, Hansen, Rush, Fowler, Grobellar. Barnes, Clemence, St John, Hunt, Gerrard. There's just too many.
It wasn't the Gerrard slip that cost LFC the title imo,it was being 3-0 up et C Palace n drawing 3-3 😢
I’m not being overly sentimental or romantic, but I grew up next to where Dalglish grew up, and he was of that ilk where life was hard, but it was all you knew, so it shaped him with a determination that only those hewn that way can understand. It’s all about community. It’s all about graft. It’s little wonder he is King of Liverpool.
My Top 5 : King Kenny Rush Fowler Gerrard Salah
Gerrard Dalglish (biggest influence on LFC) Barnes (my favourite player) Rush Souness/Hansen Honourable mentions:- Alisson Clemence Salah Fowler Neal VVD Hughes
Barnes was incredible.
JOHN ALDRIDGE.............AND JOHN BARNES
If Sterling was unaware of rushie defending from the front , he’s never watched football
Hi Carly, It's Kammy here, haha! "I've told you not to call me that on air" !!
Thats the hardest working button in football.
1. Daglish 2. Souness 3. Gerard 4. Barnes 5. Salah
Amazing insight. While us relatively new fans and I say new even though I have supported Liverpool for over 20 overs now, we may think why no Salah or Trent or VVD but these guys have seen that generation. I as a Liverpool fan didn't see dalglish, rush, barnes or hunt. For me 1. Gerrard 2. Salah 3. Alisson 4. Van Dijk 5. Trent Trent would
Rush would have doubled his tally nicking the ball off modern defenders.
You gotta put Salah & Virg in top 5, they were the force to compete with City & won everything after so long
Tge fact that luis Squarez is so loved by Liverpool fans is embarrassing 😂 he only played so good for a move and he never wanted to be at Liverpool and was desperate to move! Like Ronaldo at Manchester United but at least we had 6 years out of him. And how can Kevin Keegan not be there?!!?
My best 11 Reds-players ever: Goal: Clemence, Defense: Thompson, Neal, van Dijk, Hansen, midfield: Dalglish, Xabi Alonso, Souness, Gerrard, attack: Keegan, Torres. ......and I still saw players like Rush, Case, Kennedy, Highway, Toshack, Callaghan, Mc Dermott.....
Ian Rush the best of the lot!!!!
Have a word with yourself Gerrard is the best player to ever put on a liverpool shirt
Gerrard Kenny Suarez Barnes Van dijk
Being a Liverpool fan, I have to question myself about my club support if Stevie G went to Chelsea. Would I be a Chelsea supporter today? Because, I couldn't help myself but love Steven Gerrard during those days circa 2002-06. I just couldnt help myself self identify with him and how he played. If fact, that is why I always watched 👀 Liverpool play. I just wanted to see what he would do next. Yes, I loved Scholes and Lampard but for me it was always SG first, then PS, then FL to watch. I cherish players who played like them but I just adored SG grit and silky passing, then the extra cross or goal. He made the games he played in. Loved PS control of the game, passsing and odd goals. Lastly, FL scored goals but, I just never saw him always control the game with or like the others. FL you absolutely want on your team, what a player but third best IMO of the three. Maybe, I didnt watch him enough, he didnt catch my eye like the others, espeacially Gerrard.
Billy Liddle… Great player but I can understand Thommo’s choices.
Salah is top 5 no question, his stats, achievements etc is insane.
Not in a million years
He reminds me of Michael Jackson talking like everything is magic
I've got to agree about Digger. He's above Mo for me too. Pure class.
Kenny, Barnes, Stevie G, Salah & Virg... Hendo is close for pure passion and drive, Klopp's Captain for 7 trophies! Went with Virg because 99% of his games he looks like he's training, possibly one of the greatest CBs of all time.
Virgil can make it look so easy... Back to his greatest on Sunday
Surprised he didn't have Souness or Hansen in the top 5.
Emlyn Hughes Alan Hansen Tommy Smith Grahame Souness Phil Neal just to be a little bit different 😂
Maybe not a legend, but the best player has to Kevin Keegan.
I would agree that Barnes was a better player than Mo, both great but, Barnes was something else
What about Billy Liddle. They didn't call it Liddlepool for nothing.
Klopp❤
Disagree with one thing dalglish was in the best 5 ever what a player may not have been as easy on the eye as them in terms if dribbling with ball but he could do so much with the ball his best asset was his brain was so much quicker than most other players, he saw things they didn't, individually brilliant as part of a team just sensational no question one of the best ever
Actually the question itself is a very very difficult questions... Top five players from Liverpool. different era, trophies and etc...Very very definitely people's will gets their opinions different. But actually it is very true because Liverpool has a hundreds of very very good players than comes with a living proof.YNWA☝️
I was too young to see Roger Hunt play but can understand the sentiment.. I agree with all the other picks. However the greatest player I have seen since 1971 that if he olayed well Liverpool played well is Greame Souness. The section on more missing players has some glaring and unacceptable omissions? Not to include here, Steve Heighway, Keegan, Hansen, Van Dijk, Lawrenson, but unforgiveble Greame Souness. Yes I saw how tough Dalgkish was. Souness was even tougher so much so that Kenny had a grudge against Suoie after he joined Liverpool apparetnly due to aprior encounter where Souness had kicked Kenny.
Bobby firmino!!!! ❤
As an arsenal fan, i loved this episode
Well done sticking up for Michael Owen people have short memories. A washed out Michael Owen going to Man United to retire doesn't bother me. He didn't leave us at his peak to play for United. Ex United player Paul Ince captained Liverpool and our fans cheered him on. That is somehow double standards.
