Our a-pawn is three steps away from promoting and that is the key to win this game. The opponent will of course try to stop it so we have to play smart. How do we win this as white?
This study was composed by Vasily Smyslov in 2005.

05:51 It's a little unfortunate that a point of this chess study was not recognised. An underpromotion to a bishop to prevent stalemate is something special.
Well spotted.
Beat me to it. Was just about to comment about the undergrowth promotion
Ah, my bad! Thanks for pointing it out. Will do better next time.
5:53 you made a mistake. You have yo promote to a bishop. Coz if you take the underpromotion pawn at H1 the black would be stalemated. So you have to promote the A pawn to bishop then wait to promote the E pawn to a queen and win.
yes I was about to point that out and you did before I could. Yes we have to underpromote it and then win with our e pawn.... However the puzzle is brilliant...
Ah, my bad! Thanks for pointing it out. Will do better next time.
@@Chess-strategy You always do great. The puzzle itself was very complicated. We could only go through lines to understand the winning combination.
After 6:44 The king to D7 is much easier than taking the rook which is a little bit more complicated. But if you take the rook then After 8:00 You don't have to check all the lines. It is simple. You just give a check from G7 the king has to go to H8. Then u check again at G8 the king goes back to H7, then you check from H6 which forks the king and the queen and forces the black to trade . Off course u take with the pawn. And finally the A pawn will win the race of the promotion as it is 2 steps ahead, and take the other pawn and win. This time you can make sure the king is not under stalemate.
A beautiful study, but it seems you are not in your elements today. The miss in the analysis like the possibility of stalemate if the black queen is taken at h1 by the white queen is surprising.
Right. But the problem is easily solved by underpromotion to a bishop. I hear someone say "How beautiful!"
Ah, my bad! Thanks for pointing it out. Will do better next time.
You are doing exceptionally well! Thank you!
There seems to be a flaw in the solution. See the video at 5 minutes and 59 seconds. Its a stale mate.
@5:52; after black plays h2, and then White promotes with a8=Q; how does White get out of the drawing trap after black plays h1=Q? White can't take the Queen, and he can't give a discovered Check with Ke7.
Yes, I missed this line when I shot the video. See previous comments. White need to under promote to a bishop for the win!
@Chess-strategy Oh ok. Thank you. That makes sense
You don’t want to spend 30 minutes ? Huh, I’m not that keen either. Nice problem though. ;)
Solved
Doesn't h1=Q at 5:55 lead to a stalemate?
Yes, I missed this line when I shot the video. See previous comments. White need to under promote to a bishop for the win!
