I love that everything in this video was done in a slow and controlled manner, not just hooning the car in some sand to make it look cool. Also, leaving in the actual sounds instead of covering it with music is a big plus. Great video.

I bet a lot of buyers have no idea they are a proper ladder frame chassis 4x4. There really aren’t that many choices out there and I can only think of the Toyota Land Cruiser, Mitsubishi Shogun Sport and the Suzuki Jimny with the same set up. This is a dream car for me, classy and capable and I can imagine extremely reliable. Nice work Mercedes.
Can you explain what a chassis is, and why it's so important and particularly the "ladder frame"?
@@qp4367 sorry, its the body basically bolted separately onto the chassis, a frame, rather than it being all one construction, a monocoque body I think they call it. Allows for much greater strength and off road durability.

G-Class is the combination of luxury, power, speed, offroader and many more that no other cars can have in this manner
What about Toyo Landcruiser and Land Rover Discovery/Range Rover?
Well you can always get one of those, byt then it’s not g class, and why to get g class simple the best or nothing.

I would love to see the best cheap off-road vehicle on the same track following the G wagon. I have an AWD GV x-Sport and live in a mountainous country where commuting is 90% off-road. Furthermore, my daily drives look very similar to this. And yes, I truly believe my cheap GV could do this track with no problem. No offense to the G, it still deserves to be respected for the monster that it is.
Exactly my thoughts. My 3rd Gen 4x4 with RLD, CLD and FLD and OEM Wheels will do this obstacles with equal ease as the G WAGON hence I can't justify paying $150,000 dollars when I can pay 2000 bux for a 3rd Gen and an additional 3 Grand in lockers and Tires and get same exact results.
What I love to see on those shoot outs are some informative tiny inscriptions about the diff locks engaged on every instance. That would be precious for the offroad enthusiasts...

The G-Class is my dream SUV. 3 locking diffs, powerful engines, built like a tank, and ultra-luxurious. It's so quiet inside! One of the few cars that expensive that are totally worth the money to me. A G63 AMG though. Not a base model.

If you got enough money to buy it then you don’t have enough time for off-roading. So it doesn’t matter if it is the best off road vehicle or not. Best is the one that you can afford

I have to say I have a Jeep. The G-Wagon really surprised me, I did not think it can actually do all the things in this video, but proved me wrong. The rock crawling was man made rocks lol and was all mostly flat. But 2 thumbs up for G Class. Amazing Job!!

Ok I have a question: I do have a g wagon. I plan on using it off road. I am shopping for mud tires. From what I see here , the tire in the video looks like all season tire. Not mud, not all terrain. Am I missing something? Do I have to buy mud or all terrain tires to go off-road Or is all season tires good enoght?

if you mean the amg versions yeah, but the regular g class which you can barely even find on youtube, then its the opposite, its the most serious offroad tool in this form, its mostly used by armies, mountain rescue teams, farmers (yes farmers), campers etc

It's not an insult it's a successful offroader.
@Autos & Cultura SUVs never insult. SUVs are for taking people in off-road and damaged roads that cars cannot go offroading. People need to learn SUVs are far better than low ground clearance cars.

That’s why I have my Suzuki Samurai to go off road and make it go through everything because it is cheap but that Mercedes it is too expensive and break my heart if get even dirt a bit... But it is a beast !!!!! Nice video!!!
I can't agree with you more... Combining street credibility, luxurious appointments and premium positioning makes for an expensive vehicle. For those who on a budget, who really need an off-roader, Suzuki is the best option.
They should have kept the solid front axle instead of the IFS. It doesn't have good articulation anymore that's why it's lifting it's front wheels off the ground. Wrangler Rubicon is by far the most capable SUV you can buy.

G-Wagon is definitely a good unit but it would have been more entertaining to watch it tackle the loose gravel and dirt going up not just going down. It was never going to struggle on those inclines with the grip available on the concrete and perforated steel. Neither would 90% of 4wd's with a low range transfer case.
Impressive all the same though. Great car, wonder how reliable they are compared to a Land Cruiser ?
Like that approach: no big words, but prove - one after the other. Rock crawling and transition from lateral tilt to climb are impressive. Too much electronics tho (I suppose).

Such a shame G Wagon lost the solid front. Is neither here nor there vehicle. Not a purpose build off-road like the old G. Not a pavement vehicle either with un-aerodynamic boxy shape. Truly a poser mobile. Watch the video, the tire lifts off the ground all the time. Just by geometry, an a-arm will never have the articulation as solid axle. You are constrained by the angle of the CV shaft and length of a-arms. Ford tried the twin I-beam long ago. That was one way to get articulation back.

This is a good suv, to ride on the road, the best vehicle for of roading has always been and always will be the land cruiser

G-class is much more capable, but Land Cruiser is more reliable.
Land Cruiser is best at over landing type off roading, not serious off roading, and I'm a big fan of Cruisers...If you're referring to 200 series, now 70 series, those are very good at serious off roading...
It doesn't surprise me at all, because I know what a G Wagon can do, I totally love this car.

The flexibility of that suspension at 2:49 is just insane. Look at how the rear left wheel kind of twists to maintain body balance.
For a standard car that is insane flexibility, but for an 4x4 car,that is maybe average suspension articulation.. nothing special. landcruiser and patrol have much more..
The G wagon is the Best Luxury Off Road Machine
Can it do all that in harsh conditions on a 5000 km trip and not break down? They had to fly in shock absorbers to a bunch of them doing the Canning Stock Route in Australia. Being able to withstand fatigue and keep going is more important than the traction aids.
This was great, I would love to see them put a Range Rover and a jeep Rubicon on exact same course as comparison

Not to take away from how awesome the G-Class is, but wouldn't you expect it to perform well at a course that was designed specifically for it? I'd love to see it out on some real trails with proven off road vehicles. This is one big add by Mercedes.

I love G-Class, all are good. Especially G63 AMG, very strong exterior and modern furniture but i don't like the dashboard. Should separate the touch screen and meter

This may not be the most aerodynamic vehicle, however, the level of engineering that went into this - is just awesome. It is a real German-made beast!
German made and their so called reliability is a complete joke these days but I would agree this Mercedes G is in the vein of its proud ancestors. Of all 3 Merc / BMW / VW Audi there is no doubt Merc has always been the most reliable with a few bad patches every now and then especially in the 90-2000s. I would definitely buy a G class Diesel or a Unimog 😁

It's a tough sturdy vehicle, but almost all owners will use it like a small baby, and will be paying high servicing and maintenance cost because it has off road capabilities and will be using all their life on tarmac so 99.9 % are spending their money for something they will never use.
No matter the reliability, If I ever get one of these its going to be my daily driver and I’ll use it for all of its purposes 😊
But a bit expensive for offroad driving because of all the risks that comes from driving offroad scratches, dents etc and i doubt the parts arent that easy to find for this car either. But if you have the money then why not..
leka sallah get paint protection and done you don’t have to worry about scratches anymore:)
just don t go for an amg version, we all know them through hollywood stars but the actual regular is a tool for armies and campers, very well priced
