“I just wanted to take a moment before we start to say - lower your expectations,” Lewis Capaldi told the audience before his Tiny Desk performance. He then immediately launched into a beautifully crafted, vocally stunning four piece set.
Beginning with a special arrangement of “Before You Go,” Capaldi was flanked by a full band, including two horns - something new for the Scottish singer. His second song, “Wish You the Best,” is the latest, Capaldi-style heartbreaking single from his upcoming album Broken by Desire to Be Heavenly Sent. Capaldi joked that he didn’t have much to say about the exclusive premiere of his next song, “Heavenly Kind of State of Mind,” describing it solely as simply being three minutes long.
If you didn’t know anything about Capaldi before watching his Tiny Desk, the self-deprecating humor mixed in between gut-wrenching vocal ballads will quickly catch you up to speed. Capaldi had NPR’s audience in tears, both from laughing at sexually suggestive jokes about the size of the Desk and lyrics about the complexities of moving on after a relationship ends. “What happens now?” Capaldi asked the Tiny Desk team as he wrapped up “Someone You Loved,” the final song of his set. Time to put the video on repeat and grab a tissue box.

I dont often publicly agree. But I can't help but to very strongly agree
And Colours
Agree
How he’s able to write and perform those heart wrenching songs and proceed to tell jokes is beyond me
lot of comedy comes from despair
This is who Ed Sheeran thinks he is
@@546walter Why we bashing Ed, though? Dudes a great talent as well.
@@foxross4468 just a salty bit of comment
Its called emotional ❤
This is the first time I've ever heard Lewis Capaldi. I'm blown away. His accent is incredible, he's hilarious, his singing voice is pristine and his song writing is unreal. This is a great introduction to him, thank you NPR
My first time hearing Lewis. I also thought it was great from the first notes!
Oh you guys are going to love listening to Lewis' songs. Be prepared to cry and fall in love
he popped up in a tiktok - very cool find!
Pretty sure he's like sick or something here
@@creativewaystothrowgames5729 Nope, he has tourettes and cant control all his movements and noises. Thats whats happening I think. So when hes coughing its a tick not sickness.
As a Scot I’m bursting with pride our Lewis is some man the patter and the tears just brilliant. Not my usual music but man’s a national treasure here in Scotland 🏴💚
As a Nigerian the two famous Scots I know is Sir Alex and Lewis Calpdi

@@andreacamattari us Scot’s are very proud of Lewis his honesty is on another level
Tiny desk hits different at 3 am 😮💨
That's right
True that 😊

Hope things are OK with you knowing exactly how you feel. Take care ❤
Its like you're here
Good lord he sounds even better “live” than on the actual recordings. This man is scary talented!
Props also to the sound engineer:))
Lewis is a step above most mainstream artists imo, his abilities as a songwriter and vocalist are so much more than what's needed for popular music. I feel the same way about Jason Mraz, he's got some incredible work like Let's See What The Night Can Do
And hella funny too
no chance lol
Agree
I miss him so much, I hope he is doing well on his break from social media🖤 he deserves everything and more.
He is so underrated af.
Yep, I really hope he does well. And I agree that he's very veeery underrated, he deserves a lot more recognition, awards, etc... Anyways, let's enjoy that we exist at the same era than he does. His legacy will live on, I'm plenty sure of it.
What do we know exactly? 😢
There should be awards for best sound technicians of the internet for the NPR team. It’s always brilliantly mixed and sounds phenomenal!
It's them vs KEXP for sure
Blogothèque aren’t too shabby either
Who cares about awards in the end, we just want to hear music. I understand what you are saying, sick of awards. So much great music, let's celebrate that here on earth.
True. They’re doing a great job.
Really..!
Lewis Capaldi is a global treasure and must be protected at all costs.
Glad he's probably found a way to do that by himself.
You are everythijg I ever needed all along
Sadly he might be done performing concert look up his latest performance at glastonbury. Utterly heart wrenching. He has developed (or had them before but inactive) tourettes and can't perform to this standard anymore.
Such a lame comment. Everyone deserves to be protected.
Hardly. He just sings song. Not exactly life saving
Hats off to the audio engineer(s). Balancing soft playing with the brass. Sounds great.
Josh Rogosin always hits
Brilliant
Lewis made out his mate on piano set it all up? I don’t know if they have a sit in sound engineer. Probably sound checked themselves. 🤷🏻♂️👍🏻
@@MrSmid888He meant the music arrangements for this
Would you like a rim?
Is it normal to cry during every one of Lewis’s songs? This is beyond incredible. 💙💙💙
Not doing so would be questionable.
Yes
Dunno but I certainly do!
Yes, for me it is ❤😭
I know I do
It’s mesmerising how his voice sounds so pure and raw but at the same time realising how much control he has over it, very impressive
Really didn’t see this one coming! Tiny desk never disappoints.
I'm feeling this guy's music. Tiny desk keeps it coming
Lewis is echt een baas
Except maluma 😅
Ive heard some of Lewis's hits on the radio but haven't really sat down and listened to a lot of his stuff. He's a real talent, jeez.
He's whole first album is amazing and he's second one is out in literally 5 minutes, I'd advise giving them both a listen
amazing set of pipes on him
If you listen to the lyrics of Before You Go, he's singing to his aunt who took her own life. Pretty devastating song
thought the same until i watched his doc on netflix. it's incredible
@Oliver Gilberthorpe wait what documentary .... willll dooo
This is one of my faves tiny desks ever. Lewis is such an insanely emotional artist, even if his lyrics are not for you, he just manages to put out there a huge amount of feelings that just get to you! Hope he recovers quickly and his team helps him to get back on tour, not for the money but for him, you can see how much he loves playing live and doing this.
This tiny desk concert in particular hits different at 12am 🥲 I loved that they added the trumpet and trombone to "Before You Go" in the beginning. It was truly delightful.
Can we just talk about the production here. Such great sounds and with musicians on top of each other and especially the way he sings from super quiet to almost screaming and pushing, his voice is completely clear and balanced. Kudos to the production team for sure.
One of the best in the business. Totally agree.
I have hailed Bob Boiland since childhood...
Agreed 100%!!!! ❤👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🫶🏼
Totally agree. I'm always impressed. Boilen and his crew let everyone sound their best in this tiny environment.
Time after time. A++
He can go from cracking jokes and acting like a fool to singing like an absolute angel in a second ! Now that's talent right there ! 💯
He might be the most genuine major artist out today. He seems to be himself 100% of the time no matter what. Not worried about how cool he comes off, or if his off the cuff jokes might offend, just a goof ball. It’s refreshing, especially considering how deep his music is.
"What can I say about the next song? Well... it's three minutes long." I love him.
He's got epic pipes and natural comedic timing. That's a once in a generation combo.
True! Jamie foxx set the precedent
@@montrealer9true that ❤
Wasn’t ever my type of music but recently I watched his Netflix documentary and learned massive respect for Lewis. Glad to see him crushing it and was really happy when this came up on tiny desk
I agree. I like some of his singles, but his album isn’t my cup of tea. He is incredibly talented though. I absolutely love his sense of humor and think he has a great personality. I wish him all the success in the world. 😊
Lewis is great! And can we talk about that piano player? He’s truly feeling the music! He’s fantastic! Great job to all!
Having seen Lewis in concert I can confirm he is amazing live, the jokes never stop then he reduces you to tears with his powerful ballads. It’s a whole production on stage, but I love this more intimate version too ❤
It's so nice to see him so relaxed. He's hardly ticking. I could listen to this man sing for hours.
What a nice surprise that he did Tiny Desk. Lewis is such a funny, dorky guy you’d never think he writes music like this - or the other way around 😄 His voice comes out even more nicely in this scenario, thanks for this!
He’s perfect for this
His voice tucks me in like a baby and makes me feel at home ❤🩹
😅😅❤❤
Every Tiny Desk becomes my favorite version of each artists songs.
The transition from the 'f**k yeah' guy to one of the most emotional singers I've ever heard was nothing short of stunning
Besides my children I didn't think it was possible to love someone so much. You don't just hear him sing. You feel him sing.

This man is transparent for real. Sings with such a passion, it's just beautiful.
Crazy that they didn't put reverb and all the additional stuff on the vocals. They take the absolute raw audio from the mic and make a great mix. This is insane. Only works with kickass musicians and of course a kickass singer like Lewis!
I love Lewis. He is such an honest, geniune person. No airs or fakeness. He’s just himself and the world needs more artists and famous people in the public eye who are willing to be real and raw. Keep being yourself, Lew. We love you just the way you are. Your music is beautiful and inspiring. ❤️❤️ Thank you for having him on your show, NPR.
still needing a Paolo Nutini Tiny Desk Concert
The piano guy is the secret star of this video.
I lost my mom a few weeks ago. The first track has me in tears. Beautiful work man. Definitely following and listening to your music now. Thx
Sending you all the love. I see you ❤
I saw Lewis Capaldi's name and couldn't click fast enough. This, from a 64-year-old writer from a small town in Florida. I love his music. Thanks, Tiny Desk! Also, great musicians in the band.
Wow. That’s the best version of Before You Go I’ve ever heard. The brass, piano, brushes, everything meshed so well
Yeah it’s breathtaking
Piano player plays with so much soul and feel! 🔥
He is so relaxed in this setting love it
The horns are reminiscent of The National. Such a beautiful touch. I dig that Lewis made us laugh, maybe so we didn’t wind up as heaps of emotionally guarded human puddles.
What I was thinking
Well put ❤
So I'm a grown man ... And cried. This is an emotional rollercoaster of a set... I've laughed, cried, sang along,(the only song I knew) , laughed again! Man this is moving. Somewhere inside me needed this set.

That entire conversational lead into Heavenly Kind of State of Mind was magic.
He is such a rare talent and i love his quirky dorkiness. It is so real. And so is his crazy talent. And i thought the sound and the band was amazing and Lewis Capaldi’s writing singing and playing is brilliant. ❤
You can feel that his truth comes from the inside, he’s an amazing person and a unique singer 🤍
Lewis! I hope you’re doing ok ❤️. The neurodivergent community is rooting for you. So glad you’ve taken a break to take care of your mental health. You’re an inspiration to us all xx
I was not ready for Lewis Capaldi in Tiny Desk but I love it!
ikr had me in tears before we finished the first song and my first coffee. amaze balls.
Lewis Capaldi is a great composer, singer and human being. Glad to see him performing here. The stripped down versions with brass arrangements surprised me in the best possible way. ❤
Lewis Capaldi is the Songbird of our Century.. he is an amazing artist. Tiny Desk Concert X Lewis, that's next level.
i love this guy
He truly is a unique talent...The TinyDesk setting suits him perfectly. I could listen to him banter in between songs forever.
Lewis is so candid and so Scottish. I adore him.
He is pretty feckin Scottish
HOW come no is talking about the keyboardist? The guy is a master of his craft. So soothing
Ever come across music that you weren’t expecting and it just makes you stop everything on a dime and listen? Yeah, this.
All the music snobs need to realize that one of the toughest things to do is to write a solid simple pop track. And when that track is expressed delicately it puts most “revered” tracks to shame.
Nailed it.
💯
I respect what you’re saying, but the effort level into a symphony or similar is obviously going to be far higher than something like this. I still really enjoy Lewis Capaldi and understand it has a place within music (especially in the modern world) but I think it could be argued that the creative genius of Rachmaninov or Beethoven compared is not even a close contest. This is due to the instrumentation, the fact there were no computers to assist, more creative harmony and attention to detail. Still, you’re absolutely right in that it takes a lot more than what people think to write and produce a class pop song.
@@marksoftime 😂😂😂
@@marksoftime Yes, but I was specifically referring to modern-day artists who are highly respected by critics such as Anthony Fantano or Pitchfork. Classical composers, on the other hand, strive to create a distinct style of music that often incorporates grand compositions and intricate layers of technical complexity.
This guy is born to be loved
And he could easily switch career to stand up comedy :D
His voice truly might be one of the greatest of our generation. I cant think of anyone else that generates that much power through the entire range of their voice.
He’s so freaking talented! The soul! The voice! The mind. Wow
What a great way to start the day ❤
That's what I was thinking. ❤
never knew of him until i saw him twice as an opening act for bastille and sam smith. i was instantly drawn to his incredible voice and he was also one of the most entertaining opening acts i‘ve ever seen 😂
my lawddddd, I loved the horns arrangement 👌👌👌
absolutely incredible, imagine being able to sing like that live, god bless Lewis Capaldi!
I love that he made himself laugh in that last song and then quickly realised he is singing one of the saddest songs he's ever written lol! 17:15 for anyone who missed it
His intrusive thoughts took over for a bit
Probably thinking of the 'Chris Martin' noise😄
The best way to experience your favorite artist (if you can't see them live) .... IS ON TINY DESK! Absolute masterpiece.
This guy is a treasure, his charisma and jokes are so wholesome. Not to mention his music is amazing.
What amazes me the most is the melody. Noone mentions it, but it's such a crazy thing. He has made like 10 exceptional melodies...
I just love the fact that NOTHING about his personality has anything to do with the crazy raw and professionally styled talent he has in him. Dude legit does the OPPOSITE of bragging about it. What a guy
I’m not sure why but KZhead started feeding me Lewis Capaldi stuff about a year ago and everything I see from or about him, I love. Tiny Desk seems to capture the purest and most honest parts of musicians and I couldn’t be happier that Lewis is now on that list.
If you haven’t already done this, please read the descriptions on these videos. They’re very good. Everything is so well put together.
The most honest down to earth performers I can remember in my 60 years , love his voice, love his attitude to fame...
Chills all over. Every. Time. Lewis' voice is so unique and his performances are always so authentic. I'm happy he gets the recognition he deserves
so proud of him i could cry
Shoutout to the tiny desk sound team. Amazing job as ALWAYS. What a performance.
Absolutely beautiful and currently I'm going through a rough time in my relationship. Lost my granma who was my mother and throughout the year all i do is cry. Most time silently. Most of my life has been filled with trauma and loss. Im 23 right now and I dont want pity or anything but I hope one day my heart will be okay. Thank you Lewis, your music keeps me aflaot. This tiny desk is beautiful. It allowed me to calm down right now as I having a depressive episode and I felt empty. Your voice and personality warmed me up.
Sending you a warm hug and understanding. Hope your heart is healing.
“Heavenly State of Mind” is such a beautiful song. I’m sure so many can relate with finding that one person that comes in and saves you from yourself. Can’t wait for the new album !
Wow, 2 left-handed musicians; this is quite exceptional :) ! Great live and great artist !
The emotions his voice brings out🫠🫠
Absolutely outstanding voice (and probably safe to say lovely human as well) who shines even brighter in a setting like this. And I love that his accent doesn't disappear while singing.
His normal speaking voice vs his singing voice never ceases to amaze me 😂 I love everything ❤
Super. Great to hear Glasgow getting a name check in such fantastic ,moving music. What a voice. So good to see him on tiny desk - THE place for real music.
Henrik Larsson 💪💪💪
I remember listening "Before you go" playing on the supermarket station a day before my grandpa passed. At that moment, I knew the next time I'd see him it'd be the last time. He was in a hospital bed and very weak. I also remember telling him that I love him, but although we wanted to tell me the same thing, he couldn't speak because of a tracheostomy. It's been a year and half and I still can't listen to this song without crying my eyes out. It's this song and "If this is the last time", by LANY. JFC, I'm currently a mess.
❤
what a lad and band!
Heavenly Kind Of State Of Mind has been my favorite new song so far! Can’t wait to hear it on the album!
Just raw talent. God bless Lewis. Oh, can you imagine a Lewis and Adele collab. It would either be car crash or in the Guinness book of records for song that causes most tears.
The vibrato at the beginning of each chorus where he sings the word “love” is absolutely flawless

He's best acoustic in intimate settings like this, circa 2017.
