Lewis Capaldi: Tiny Desk Concert

“I just wanted to take a moment before we start to say - lower your expectations,” Lewis Capaldi told the audience before his Tiny Desk performance. He then immediately launched into a beautifully crafted, vocally stunning four piece set.
Beginning with a special arrangement of “Before You Go,” Capaldi was flanked by a full band, including two horns - something new for the Scottish singer. His second song, “Wish You the Best,” is the latest, Capaldi-style heartbreaking single from his upcoming album Broken by Desire to Be Heavenly Sent. Capaldi joked that he didn’t have much to say about the exclusive premiere of his next song, “Heavenly Kind of State of Mind,” describing it solely as simply being three minutes long.
If you didn’t know anything about Capaldi before watching his Tiny Desk, the self-deprecating humor mixed in between gut-wrenching vocal ballads will quickly catch you up to speed. Capaldi had NPR’s audience in tears, both from laughing at sexually suggestive jokes about the size of the Desk and lyrics about the complexities of moving on after a relationship ends. “What happens now?” Capaldi asked the Tiny Desk team as he wrapped up “Someone You Loved,” the final song of his set. Time to put the video on repeat and grab a tissue box.

Lewis is such an insanely emotional artist, even if his lyrics are not for you, he just manages to put out there a huge amount of feelings that just get to you! Hope he recovers quickly and his team helps him to get back on tour, not for the money but for him, you can see how much he loves playing live and doing this.

  • All the music snobs need to realize that one of the toughest things to do is to write a solid simple pop track. And when that track is expressed delicately it puts most “revered” tracks to shame.

    • I respect what you’re saying, but the effort level into a symphony or similar is obviously going to be far higher than something like this. I still really enjoy Lewis Capaldi and understand it has a place within music (especially in the modern world) but I think it could be argued that the creative genius of Rachmaninov or Beethoven compared is not even a close contest. This is due to the instrumentation, the fact there were no computers to assist, more creative harmony and attention to detail. Still, you’re absolutely right in that it takes a lot more than what people think to write and produce a class pop song.

    • @@marksoftime Yes, but I was specifically referring to modern-day artists who are highly respected by critics such as Anthony Fantano or Pitchfork. Classical composers, on the other hand, strive to create a distinct style of music that often incorporates grand compositions and intricate layers of technical complexity.

Most of my life has been filled with trauma and loss. Im 23 right now and I dont want pity or anything but I hope one day my heart will be okay. Thank you Lewis, your music keeps me aflaot. This tiny desk is beautiful. It allowed me to calm down right now as I having a depressive episode and I felt empty. Your voice and personality warmed me up.

  • I remember listening "Before you go" playing on the supermarket station a day before my grandpa passed. At that moment, I knew the next time I'd see him it'd be the last time. He was in a hospital bed and very weak. I also remember telling him that I love him, but although we wanted to tell me the same thing, he couldn't speak because of a tracheostomy. It's been a year and half and I still can't listen to this song without crying my eyes out. It's this song and "If this is the last time", by LANY. JFC, I'm currently a mess.
