Look at all that floating plastic debris at the base where the water flows over the dam.
Because plants Qat
It’s always like that in these countries alas. They could at least have nets to catch it.
It's very sad. A debris catcher would be best, but not going to happen in a developing country.
I've seen their rivers completely covered in trash.
The USA isn't any better in regards to trash in our waterways 😢
No matter the danger, some human will stand in front of a flood, tsunami, or avalanche with a camera.
With random gunshots going off in the background.
It pains me too much seeing all that trash contaminating such an important natural resource and nature itself. Some forget Nature is home and life for all of us. Thank you for sharing.

Having firsthand experience with middle eastern concrete I would not stand anywhere near that dam.
Oh I agree! I lived in Kuwait for 15.5 years.
Looking at the wall thickness on the side I'm wondering if they had anyone who could do the calculations on the weight & force of water.
Im confused as to why they constructed it backwards. Having the buttresses on the wrong side isn't going to help.
@@ptaylor4923 What? Lol....this is so common in Arabia

He skipped over the best part.... when the onlookers that came to watch a flash flood hit a dam finally figured out they were standing in the spillway...
I was actually waiting and searched for that part but alas.
I hate to be a killjoy, but I don't think that was an intentional spillway.
Would love to have seen that part.
I was waiting for that part too what a bummer I guarantee it was funny
My next question is why didn’t they build a bridge to go across at the same time as the dam
The place is Wadi Bana - Between Al Habilayn and Al Rasha'ah on Yemen - Arabic Peninsula - Some 350 Km south from Sanaã, the capital, or about 1300 Km south of Meca.

It appears to be an incomplete construction. You can see the rebar sticking out of the top, and it's also uneven. Maybe it's not designed to stop all the water, but just enough for irrigation. The valley looks quite fertile or green, so it must not be too dry, at least not all the time. It's a beautiful place.
With the sides at nearly the same height as the middle, that dam is just a small temporary obstruction to the water flow.
Unfinished concrete is a common practice in 80% of the world and a source of structural weakness in a few years time. I guess the dam gives those downstream a bit of warning and takes out large rocks/trees?
The flash flooding is bringing down so much silt and debris that the weir will soon be totally ineffective unless they truck it away which doesn't seem likely as they haven't even bothered to complete the construction.@@pat8988
Yes, might be the dam was mid construction when repeated floods wrecking it before it could be completed. It appears that the area behind it was perhaps intended to be turned into a small reservoir or catch basin. In the OP description he seems to indicate it is a dam being destroyed by flash floods, and based on the bare rebar from high above the waterfall, it's seems clear it was intended to be a much higher dam.

How to save yourself in a flood: Stay out of flooded buildings. Avoid wading in or driving through water. Floodwater can contain sewage and conceal dangers, including debris, open manholes, and downed power lines. Did you know? Two feet [0.6 m] of moving water can carry a car away. Most deaths in a flood result when people try to drive through moving water.
And yet all the media shows are cars driving through flooded streets. Why? Because it's good video.
I pull over and stop driving when snow accumulation gets to brushing the underside of my car during heavy snowfalls, as such contact robs me too much of my steering .. riskiness simply ain't worth the bother
How to save yourself in a flood: Don't gather in the path of a flood.
The awesoime power of nature should never be under estimated
Especially by engineers, builders, and politicians.
And also the stupidity of people who think that rivers and streams are garbage disposal sites. I have no understanding or compassion for these people. They don't live in these conditions because they can't do anything else, but because they don't WANT to. It is self-chosen fate.
then all dams would be 100 miles high and 50 miles thick
Once the "reservoir" behind the wall (some people interpret that wall as a dam) is filled up, then the rate of flow downstream is the same as that upstream. What's the benefit? Was the project finished? I see the side-walls upstream getting overflowed.
projects? that's India, no projects for anything.
I thought the same thing. But, I think they are just retaining some of the water for local irrigation. This isn't flood control, it is only a reservoir.
It's clearly not finished with all the exposed rebar. And I'd guess it's been that way for a while as the rebar in the channel has seen multiple floods and is all bent down against the concrete.
The rate of flow is interrupted and restarts. Come to Europe where we use this technique a lot in the mountains. This method also reduces bank erosion and prevents larger rocks being transported because of the flow reduction in the lake behind the dam. I'm talking car-sized rocks and bigger. It's a technique that works very well.

So many people going on about plastic in this waterway evidently haven't lived in a dry country. There is just as much plastic and rubbish where you live, the difference is the wind and rain take it away regularly. When it's months between rainfall and occasionally years, this is a fraction of what most Western countries dump.

Weird that this “dam” is by no means completed. Look at the rebar for connecting the next concrete pour sticking out. It’s really not even clear what the purpose/function is of this structure, certainly not flood control, electricity generation, nor irrigation impoundment. With the haphazard placement and construction, I doubt this structure will last more than five years if this stream floods a few times per year at this level.
That first dam was impressive.
