OPENING A SPILLWAY GATE AFTER YEARS OF BEING CLOSED
OPENING A SPILLWAY GATE AFTER YEARS OF BEING CLOSED
Opening a dam spillway radial gate after three years of closure involves a carefully planned and executed process. The first step is to assess the current reservoir conditions, including water levels, inflow, and weather forecasts. Engineers and dam operators must ensure that the opening of the radial gate will not result in flooding downstream or other adverse effects.
Once the assessment is complete and it is deemed safe to proceed, the radial gate can be opened gradually. This process typically involves hydraulic or mechanical systems to control the gate's movement. Opening the gate allows excess water to flow out of the reservoir, preventing overtopping of the dam and managing downstream water levels.
The reopening of the spillway after a prolonged closure may have various purposes, such as releasing accumulated sediment, restoring natural flow patterns, or addressing specific water management needs. Throughout the process, close monitoring and coordination are essential to ensure the safety of both the dam structure and the surrounding areas. Dam operators will continue to monitor the situation and make adjustments as necessary based on real-time data and observations.

What's up with the weird subtitles?
It's a script and probably a computerized voice. "This process typically involves hydraulic or mechanical systems to control the gate's movement." If the reader had the specifications of THIS dam, she would already know which it is. Anyway, it looks like a fairly typical report to the public to improve the image of the facility and the departments that built and maintain it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neelum%E2%80%93Jhelum_Hydropower_Plant
Where is the nudity??????????????????
@@OzSpud72 4:12 is where you see mention of nudity. I wonder what the auto-translator thought it meant?
The subtitles make sense for the first 2 mins and then all hell breaks loose, after four minutes even the narration gets wild and it becomes every man for himself. A battle of wills between AI subtitles and AI narration in what surely must be a fight to the death.
It sounds like you're pointing out the limitations of a generic script or computerized voice in conveying specific details about a dam, especially when the reader might already have access to the specifications of that particular dam. Additionally, you suggest that the content appears to be part of a report aimed at improving the public image of the facility and the departments responsible for its construction and maintenance. Indeed, when dealing with technical content, tailoring information to the specific context and audience is crucial. If the audience already possesses detailed knowledge, providing more specific and pertinent details would enhance the communication. Reports aimed at the public often serve the purpose of transparency and education, highlighting the efforts put into construction, maintenance, and safety measures. Clear and accurate communication is essential in maintaining public trust and understanding, especially when dealing with critical infrastructure like dams. If there are specific aspects of the report or the dam's operations that you find interesting or if you have further questions, feel free to share, and I can provide more targeted information.

We used flap gates at the top of the dam to release extra water Downstream in high flow season. In the video the gate is opened during the reservoir flushing to clean the silt built-up in the reservoir and behind the gates.

Yes you are right 👍. Due to gates bigger in size and we can only open it minimum 1000mm due to cavitation and Abrasion effects on Downstream ogee concrete that opening releases 500 cumecs water when the reservoir is at full level. It causes drop in reservoir level and shortage of water for power generation. if we keep this gate open below 1000mm it damages the ogee concrete as well as the steel liner and sill beam due to high velocity of water jet cuts the steel plates

You know the saying "They should've sent a poet"? For this video, they did.
Still, putting the incredibly bad AI translation of some users manual, one can wonder why this simple short maneuver is not done ounce every 6 months instead? The surge wave must do a fair amount of damage though.
It seems like you're expressing a concern about the potential negative impact of an AI translation on a user manual, and you're also wondering why a specific maneuver is not performed more frequently, perhaps every six months. Additionally, you mention the potential damage caused by a surge wave. In the context of user manuals, accurate and clear translations are crucial to ensure users understand instructions properly. If there's an issue with the quality of an AI translation, it could lead to confusion or misunderstandings. Regarding the maneuver done every six months, the frequency of such activities is typically determined by various factors, including engineering recommendations, maintenance schedules, and the specific requirements of the system or equipment involved. It's possible that performing the maneuver more frequently might not be necessary or could be logistically challenging. If you have more specific details or questions about the maneuver, surge waves, or any related topic, feel free to provide additional information so that I can offer a more targeted response.
Well I really did not want to discuss a subject I have little to no interest or experience with, Yet firstly the translation commentary was repeating and therefore the quality and content was not taken seriously. Best to watch the final result at least ounce before posting. Secondly, my reference to the frequency of the flushing of sediment was simply based on what we could see. Huge amounts of what we call "Slip" in pottery that has to end up somewhere. Yet on seeing the incredible amount left in the dam itself, flushing ounce a week would never be enough. The amount was taking up half of the total volume of the dam! I put that down to using the wrong materials or simply that the dam is too old to be fixed.@@Kashmir_explorer786
You’re right. Kill fish I’m sure.

I *definitely* recommend a controlled and gradual release if you suspect a sediment load has accumulated behind your gate!
Can you imagine the fitst Dam to do this not realizing how much sediment had built up! They'd keep raising the gates until water started flowing freely but it'd never get to that point once the sediment cleared and the explosion of water overwhelmed the structure! Kinda scary how much power was behind that sediment.
Sediment removal is carried out in this way in a run of river Hydropower Dam. Empty and refilling of the reservoir takes only a few days.
As an engineer, I witnessed a 5-minute, full-open test of a large radial gate. The erosion was so powerful it excavated at least ten feet into the rock downstream. In this video, when I saw the condition of the concrete on the spillway ogee, I was alarmed by what would happen if they opened the gate to as little as three feet. Fortunately, they kept the opening height down to inches. It might have been disastrous otherwise.
When it remains opens less than 1m it causes erosion in concrete Downstream
I had to turn the volume down.

QUESTION: Whats up with that huge crosswise fracture (0:15) in the spillway right below the Radial Gate ? That cannot be good.
I remember damming up the creek over the backyard fence after breakfast (shredded wheat) and then opening the flood gates when mom called me in for lunch (peanut butter and banana, I think), I don't remember much of a backlog of sediment having built up in that interim.
Are you... Elvis??
