  • Nate I bought a 12 pack of easy rider, it was so good I drank the whole thing and woke up next to a woman resembling a manatee. Gonna grab another case after work!

  • I got a chance to watch you guys that morning and met Nathan, Ivan and Zord while you guys were waxing up in the parking lot. John and Eli were already walking to beach. Everyone was so genuinely nice. I had seen the rest of North Shore was big wash-throughs and since I was staying at Haleiwa, I thought I might surf there. Needless to say, after watching you guys, I figured it was a better choice to stay on shore, at least for that morning. By the way, I was able to use Nate's starfish technique when I was surfing at OTW later that same week. Managed to save board and me from reef. Thanks for all your tips and just giving more background from your experience. I find it really helpful when you are about to get smoked so you can have some more confidence and maybe get less dinged up.

    @SoNJFF@SoNJFFАй бұрын
    • What’s the starfish technique?

      @N3vDawg@N3vDawg26 күн бұрын
    • @@N3vDawg It is for when you are stuck on reef with shallow water left around you. As the whitewater is coming in, you throw board up (away from your body/head) and yourself up into whitewash, you arms/legs spreadwide (envision a starfish). Hopefully, the whitewater pushes you up/over reef. It is kind of a last resort when you can't duck dive or otherwise bail.

  • Epic. I got a good leash story from a big day on West side Kauai, Queens Pond/Polihale. Caught inside, scratching thinking I'm going to make it but had to bail mid duck dive, this crazy double up I swear it was TRYING to get me just lands on my head, instantly my leash wraps around my neck and squeezes tight so I reacted and got that thing right off, didn't get a good breath in the first place now I'm getting flogged for what felt like a minute full spin cycle didn't even know which way was up until my leash was pulling on my leg as I'm upside down, get to the surface and get a half breath before the next one lands on my head and I'm already feeling woozy so I'm just like oh shit... Pushes me straight down super deep, feet first and I guess I caught an air bubble or something idk, and got sent straight back up, I popped out of the top like a frikkin dolphin- I swear to God, it was weird- like my waist up was out of the water, got a huge breath and got sucked back down, got pretty flogged again but I was relaxed at that point so no worries but I paddled back out- way out- and had to sit there and regain my senses for maybe 15 minutes. Had a pretty good day after that. I got lucky cuz if I hadn't got that breath I might have blacked out. Anyways good show boys love the war stories.

Yeah getting your leash wrapped around the reef is no joke We were waiting for our heats at Haleiwa the next day back in1990 when my bo Barry Wilson got his leash wrapped around the reef at Gas Chambers and fuckin drowned. Expert surfer from Ventura. Recently I got my leash wrapped around the reef at Uluwatu and it's was gnarly. Even here at my home break I got my leash wrapped around what we call the Suicide Bowl and could have drowned if I didn't rip my leash No joke I get it

  • Re: Leashes. You guys need to get someone to make an inertial reel leash, like a car's sealtbelt. But so the tension increased as it spooled out, like the arrester wire on an aircraft carrier, finally stopping the board, after the tension increased exponentially or whatever. Then you could hit a catch when you were back at the board to reel it back in, or while you were in the water to bring the board to you, but slowly, so there are no fins wacking your head. Kai Lenny just showed off a fat-nosed gun he had made, and there might be room in a big fat nose like that for the reel mechanism. Otherwise you could do something like attach the reel to a vest with flotation bladders etc in it, so all of your controls were on your chest within reaching distance. Snags like the Nias paddle out one wouldn't be a huge problem if the leash was in a reel, but still, having all the controls right there might come in handy.
