  • Ferdinand the Bull, the character The Cow Opening was named after, symbolized in his beloved children's book the idea that it's perfectly valid to not do exactly what's expected from society if what you're doing brings you joy. It really makes him the perfect symbol for an opening that's celebrating chess as an experience that's not intimidating, but something for everyone.

  • Thanks Anna, you got me interested again in chess after a few decades and now as a beginner again I'm enjoying chess vlogs on youtube and particularly the chess puzzles on a popular online app to slowly slowly learn what my particular weaknesses are and to learn more about chess by practicing puzzles. Just finished a few days puzzling Pawn Endgames which I now sense I understand to a degree. Next Improvement Area to work on is Zugzwang. So far it is Defensive Move I have found most difficult but am confident something will 'click' in my head and I'll have more understanding about them. Pawn End Games were a mystery to me until I watched some vlogs and a few things 'clicked'. Maybe next year or the year after I'll be able to play at speed rather than 1 or 2 mins per move! Your narrations are both entertaining and instructive. Thanks

  • I never thought it was "stupid". You thought it out. You didn't just do something goofing around. YOU think you did. But in reality you were using STRATEGY, to build a DECEPTION. THAT is why I said I thought it was actually good. Something I've posted many times? About when you say, "Here, I was scared". This? Comes though to your opponent. Especially men, will use this to their advantage- Between men, we call it, "trash talk". But this is chess- people don't think of it this way. Your goal is to win the war. To do this, you can NEVER just play obvious chess. There's the unexpected moves, which can also be a mistake)- then there's the deceptive moves. This is actually your way of lulling an opponent into thinking the way YOU want them to think. The simple fact that you thought this THROUGH, deeper into the game, proves this out. I think you did awesome- And there's even more props & kudos coming your way down the line- as greater & greater players begin ADDING to your strategy. This is going to be a blast to watch. Congratulations Anna!

Players at my (low) level are not used to it, and just knowing the one opening moderately well is enough to dominate in most of my games. The Cow seems like a fun opening, especially with Black. Even though it is a little harder, you are not giving up the initiative, you never had it, so White winds up attacking a structure that they are not familiar with.

  • Hi I am not a player but watch chess because I respect the complexity of the game. I wanted to tell you I love your always happy vibe and am so happy for you that your cow opening is respectable and officially a real opening. This is something you can be very proud about. You know thousands of players and how many have their own opening? Exactly. I think the cow could be very successful especially in speed or bullet chess or whatever you guys call it because with time an issue it may throw opponents off because they don't have their first 15 moves memorized to play fast in typical openings . They will have to think very early and create time problems for themselves until the cow becomes so popular the chess world invents the bull defense to possibly counter a cow opening. Then you could really be proud but either way you have contributed to the game permanently. I see it being super effective in bullet chess because the slight disadvantage it has is still very solid and the unfamiliarity of it MORE than makes up for it. Unbalancing your opponent has to carry some weight right? I don't play but I think this makes sense.

  • You know... that's an achievement. On second review: this is a very good defensive setup: you are two moves away from a kingside castle or three moves for a queenside castle. The resulting castle is quite secure and you have bishops/knights or bishops/queens in positions ready to attack.

  • 26:53 I think they were considering the pressure of having the bishop target the pawn and then bringing the rook, they looked at their low time, and forgot they didn't move the bishop yet.

  • that's one of the best random things. this might not be a good opening but also not bad and it is yours. you can be proud of that - at least in a way

  • I played that move during high school a lot. Even won a trophy and never play chess again since those days. Genia Anna.

  • hi Anna. Just wanting you to know that since I saw your videos about The Cow, I had been playing it almost exclusively, except for a few random games here and there. It's fun! And like you've said in the past, it lets you set up your opening almost on autopilot (unless the opponent does something super unusual) and gets you into the middle game and gives you a strong shot and not blundering your pieces in the beginning. It's also fun to see opponents try to make the same moves over and over, where you can just flick the aggressive bishops away, or block the edge pawn's advancement, etc. I'm not surprised others have taken a liking to it also. Congrats! That truly is an accomplishment in the chess world. Even Magnus Carlsen doesn't have a named opening he created (as far as I'm aware).

  • I play London system and Jobava London exclusively, however I'm excited to try the Cow at the chess park and hope to overthrow my opponents with this relatively unknown opening.

  • This is so cool :D the best ideas usually pop up out of nowhere don't they haha. I am a beginner myself trying to get into chess a bit more by the day. I will definitely be giving the cow a shot! ^^

  • Im really gald they did this! Ive been saying since the beginning its a legitimately viable opening for most levels. But especially for beginners, the fact it works with both colors...I mean i win a fair % of my games when i use it, at least half. I guess it might show me in the insights tab now!

  • i like chess, but i barely play it cause it tends to be very overwhelming to me. i love your videos and i have looked at strategy but then in game my head just starts smoking and i feel like everything i do end up super random. i don't play online, but mostly with my boyfriend who's at a similar level to me which keeps the fun. yet i'd sometimes just like to manage to have some kinda plan. now seeing the cow's opening... i might try this... i haven't been able to properly remember an opening so far and also they tend to depend a lot on what the opponent is playing (and since we are both not super skilled that is sometimes even more unpredictable lol)... so i might try this one, it seems easy to remember, accessible and i feel like i'll actually know what i am doing and for what purpose. i think it's a great beginners opening ngl
