Francis Ngannou Only Remembers First Punch Anthony Joshua Landed | The MMA Hour

Francis Ngannou talks about the physical and emotinoal fallout from his knockout loss to Anthony Joshua, how he felt after getting knocked down the first time, the unusually long wait for the fight to start, whether he felt more nervous for the fight with title shot on line, how he broke from tradition and watched the fight, whether Joshua would beat Tyson Fury, if he’s annoyed by revisionist history of his boxing career, whether the fight was the biggest payday of his career, when he can fight again, his desire to fight Tyson Fury, his reaction to the announcement he’d fight the winner of Ryan Bader vs. Renan Ferreira, whether his PFL contract requires him to fight in MMA this year, whether he regrets anything about the fight, and more.

    • Very true. This is what makes boxing very dangerous. A doctor said it’s safer to be brutally knocked out in the first rounds than to take a whole 12 round lopsided beat down from the other opponent. One can be concussed but be extremely tuff and continue the fight and take on going punishment and suffer greatly for it later. Take boxer Patrick day for example, can’t believe his video is still on KZhead but he died after his knockout in the later rounds. Only 26 or 27 years old.

What Francis said was that he wasn’t feeling mentally there. Have you ever had a bad day at the office? A presentation gone wrong? A date gone wrong because you were too nervous? Tighten up his defence and don't react so much to feints and i think he could be a real force in boxing over the next few years. This i think is a valuable learning experience for him.

  • The training camp wasn’t good because your guard was all over the place and you switched stance like it was nothing expecting to confuse AJ. Dude, AJ just fought one of the best Southpaws ever, he’s bitter about it and wants his belts back. You honestly think he’s not been working on how to defeat Southpaws. Right now AJ’s on one and he ain’t going to let no mma fighter mug him off by disrespecting him. Unless you’re Crawford, no boxer going to start switching stances in front of someone that has won most his fights by knockout. When someone in sparring starts with all that bs of switching stances, they are saying they don’t respect you. When that happens, you apply pressure and don’t allow someone to start getting comfortable. It’s not rocket science. It’s one of the most basic things you get taught in an amateur boxing club, are you right handed or left handed, stop switching because you’ll get confused 🫤 and end up in trouble

Switching stances in boxing is something that most boxers never reach or will never find a coach that can teach them properly. It’s a bit of a lost art. Mike Tyson used to do it close quarter and used it to devastating effect.

  • It's lame how people are mocking Francis and MMA now. Styles makes fights. Francis overachieved against Fury and wasn't prepared enough for Joshua considering the lack of experience and matchup. Even Chisora lost badly to Fury and did good against Usyk who beat Joshua with ease. Anyway, if Fury does great against Usyk and Joshua, people are going to give Francis credit again. Watched this too many times... Just disappointed that Francis didn't get to connect on Joshua or show his skills.

He needed to close the distance like Ruiz did to give himself any chance of beating Aj and he didn't unfortunately.

    • Exactly. AJ was just too experienced and well prepared for francis. The way he set him up the whole fight was honestly him proving how good he has become. If francis fought the AJ who fought Ruiz or anyone else from years ago he probably would have had a better chance. But AJ has honestly evolved massively and I think it’s from bouncing around trainers and gaining more IQ and massively because of the Usyk fights and him experiencing the levels of a masterful skilled boxer for 24 rounds. Tyson has a high IQ too but he just didn’t have the power to hurt or make francis respect him.

He was lucky enough to get two top boxing stars with no experience and even the wbc's stupid top 10 ranking after one fight. Francis has earned his highest payday against AJ and it's only downhill from there, still a few million but it won't be 20 plus and he never felt anything after the first punch because he was badly hurt and even though AJ flat lined him, he still not showing the correct respect.

From Turki Alshaiq saying he wanted to see Francis knocked out to Fury being so cosy with Turki that he lives at his house when in Saudi to Francis saying he felt drowsy even during his warm ups. *SOMETHING DOESN'T SMELL RIGHT ABOUT THAT FIGHT* Even that first knockdown didn't have knockdown power on it.
