The Biggest Diorama I've Ever Built! Watermill in 1/35 Scale

My friends, sometimes you design a diorama around the model, and sometimes you choose a model for the diorama. This was the latter case because a truck loaded with sacks of flour sounded perfect for a large diorama with a water mill. This is definitely the most complex diorama I've done so far, featuring pretty much every texture you can imagine - bricks, rocks, old wood, grass, dry ground, a cobblestone road, figures, and let's not forget the creek made from epoxy resin!

Disclaimer: I have a good relationship with a handful of modelling brands and stores, namely VMS, Michigan Toy Soldier Company, and AK-Interactive. As such, I'm happy to use their products/services, and show them in my work. In return, they support my efforts in this hobby, although my hands are not bound nor am I obligated to push one brand or the other. This was one of the founding ideas of the channel and I will always stand by this.

    • Yes. At least three other modelers have mentioned that they either are doing something they saw Uncle doing or are trying not to do something they saw him do in just the last week. Gotta say that one thing I really like about him is his willingness to not just step but leap out of his comfort zone. Here he is doing figures like he’s been doing it his whole life, building things that aren’t tanks, and building dioramas. Yes Uncle, some of us remember when you said you’d never build a diorama.

  • Dear Uncle. Now everyone sees why you changed your style of releasing videos. Its a VERY long video, but VERY GOOD as well. It soothing, detailed and - most importantly - i never felt you would rush through the topic. And thats what you did back in the day when we had weekly videos. So, dear Martin, thank you. Great video (amazing build too!) and a very own unique style too.

  • This model diorama building channel is by far one of the best here on KZhead in my humble opinion. As someone who has been doing this type of work for over forty years I’ve seen everything under the sun in terms of techniques and trends . Products good or bad come and go. Model kits horribly produced or perfectly made are everywhere. True talent and most importantly someone who genuinely enjoys what they are doing always catches my eye. Story telling and fun are paramount in diorama creation. You my friend are excelling in those areas. May your imagination and joy never end…

  • Martin, if you want to even out the surface of your wood stain try using a "rubber" as French polishers call it, it's basically a small cloth 'bag' filled with cotton waste that holds the stain, and you can wipe it over a surface to give a really even finish - much better than using a brush. Sorry for using English terminology, but there's sure to be a video on it to give you an idea.

  • New subscriber here...and I have to say, your videos are the best part of my day! I just love watching your incredible skill and also hearing about the hows and why you do certain things. I have learned so much watching your videos and my own dioramas are going to benefit. I am currently working on my first diorama in a really long time (at least 7 years) as I am just now getting back into modeling. I think I am a bit crazy, but my diorama is about as big as this huge water mill one you just did. I am scratch-building a bombed-out old bank with a Navy Seal team conducting a manhunt for a fugitive who will be hiding out on the 3rd floor. I have scratch-built walls and concrete columns out of XPS foam, a wood floor structure using wood popsicle-type sticks with cardboard floors and drywall, cardboard stairs, and a broken styrofoam "concrete" flat roof with protruding rebar. Of course, this means tons of debris on the ground so I am looking at a LOT of painting of the individual stones, bricks, broken joists, ceiling, etc. But, I'm approaching it with your "infinity" solution and tackling one small area at a time so it doesn't seem so overwhelming. I have a very limited budget and just used a lot of Christmas money to purchase some good tools and a small variety of paints but it is not anywhere close to what probably could and should be used on this model. But, I'm making do with what I have and trying to adjust the steps to fit with what colors and items I actually have. So far it's been quite enjoyable and my wife commented the other day that she is really impressed and it really looks like concrete - and a complete mess of a building (since it's been destroyed!) so that was nice to hear! Anyway, thank you so much for all you do and your willingness to share your talents with the world! Your videos are so much fun to watch! Eventually, I'll get through all of them and I hope to be able to join your Patreon one day to help support you. Take care, muh friend, and keep up the outstanding work!
