  • Poor Berdych... He played lights out in AO 2012 and 2014 but still couldn't make it the finals. Unlucky that he had to face God-mode Nadal and Wawrinka :/

    • Against Nadal, he had 2 set points in that second set tiebreaker that could have given him a two set lead.

  • People talk about Big 3, then the next gen.... But people truly forgot the tennis we had 7-15 years ago. Big 4, Berdych, Wawrinka, Ferrer, Soderling, Roddick, Delpo, Tsonga, Verdasco, Davydenko, Nalbandian, Blake, Baghdatis, Safin, Hewitt. Man these guys at their prime will destroy any next gen no problem when fit.

  • Berdych had the better career up to this tournament and really this match turned their fortunes around. Wawrinka won three slams and been to the final of another and Berdych stagnated and went downhill (thanks in part to injuries). It's interesting how the guys just below the big three (and Murray I suppose) were above Wawrinka (Berdych, Tsonga, Ferrer, Gasquet, Cilic-though Cilic did carve himself a nice career since 2014 as well with a US Open title, a final at Wimbledon in 2017 and Australia in 2018), but Wawrinka just exploded here. I think Wawrinka finally broke through at a slam in 2013, with that epic against Djokovic. He made it to the QF of the French semi of the US Open in 2013 (Losing again to Djokovic in 5 sets) and it gave him confidence for 2014 and beyond. He surpassed all his contemporaries apart from the big three and Murray.

  • Wawrinka was able to reinvent his career especially after Norman became his coach - he kept searching until he found the answer to winning a grand slam. It was very smart of him to get Norman who had a fantastic run with Soderling, one of the few people to beat Nadal on Clay @ French Open. Tatoo on Wawrinka says what it took: "Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try Again. Fail again. Fail better." He failed, learnt and evolved into a champion. He might win wimbledon and complete the grand slam :)

    • Berdych was way better than Wawrinka until 2012/2013. Berdych was a constant top 10 player and had a m1000 win in 2005 with Wawrinka sitting barely inside the top 20 for many years. IMO, Berdych slowly got better heading into the 2010s while Wawrinka just eclipsed him in 2013 and played like a big 4 member at slams.

Luckily, Berdych does not play very long rallies (mostly) which worked in Wawinka's favor. Then, Wawrinka could rest for quite some time (nearly 3 days iirc) and beat Rafa, although Rafa got injured.
