We were allowed to walk through the interior construction facility, were other subs were in various phases of construction. The technology on display we beyond mind-bending. I had never seen anything outside of NASA at this level of technology. Truly amazing. btw: The sub was launched in the dead of winter. It gracefully slide into the bay where several tugboats were awaiting.

    • It is reasonable to interpret the North's nuclear submarine as meaning an SSB equipped with nuclear warheads and ballistic missiles, and as North Korea's official announcement has always been, it is confusing its opponents with vague expressions and falsehoods. However, it seems true that efforts are being made to increase the weight and range of ballistic missiles mounted on SSBs and to increase the quietness of the platform, and even conventional submarines, North Korea's strength in ballistic missiles, including South Korea, is not satisfactory. It is also true that the ultimate counter for this is a nuclear submarine.

    • The three black tarps hanging off of each side are covering up the side sonar arrays. The blurred-out area at the front of the sub is concealing the Virginia Payload Tube, which replaced multiple individual cruise missile launch tubes with one big tube that can carry seven cruise missiles (or other ordnance) inside of it. The VPT was first installed on the Block 3 Virginia subs, of which this sub (SSN 789) is one. The newest Block 5 subs are going to have an additional 70 feet of length added to them so that four more VPTs can be installed near the center of the boat, which will allow them to carry an additional 28 Tomahawk cruise missiles. They are doing this because the first four Ohio-class subs, which were converted from nuclear missile-carrying subs (SSBNs) to cruise missile-carrying subs (SSGNs) and can each carry a whopping 154 Tomahawks, are all now 40+ years old and are very near retirement.

On each of the docked subs, the area of the prop is distorted in the photo. I'm guessing that the shape of the prop is an important part of why modern subs are so fast, and so quiet. Good job, guys!

  • I remember when I was a kid, I was in the NJROTC (Navy Junior Reserve Officer’s Training Corps). Our group visited a submarine base in King’s Bay, near Valdosta, Georgia. We stepped aboard a Trident class missile attack submarine. It was called the Benjamin Franklin. The bridge was like a spaceship. It was also being resupplied by the submarine tender on the starboard side. Among those supplies were torpedoes. A seaman scared us by jumping onto one. Thank God it was unarmed. A seaman told me “Don’t ever get on any of these boats.” I asked him why. He told me, “Because you won’t see the sun and you won’t see any women.” That was back in the early 80’s. I couldn’t join the military because I had scoliosis and the government didn’t want to take any chances. If I didn’t have scoliosis, I would serve until I made captain. I tried to join the U.S. Air Force. Same result. To those who have served or are still serving, thank you for all your dedication and courage.

That is why they wait until dark to remove the fabrics and prop cover and lower it. Final photos also show blurred area at the bow most likely detection equipment or 45 degree launch tubes for cruise missiles but given how forward the mast is it most likely isn’t launch tubes.

I was working on the last overhaul/refueling of the Enterprise when I left in 92. Kills me to see her tied up at the pier awaiting a terrible fate. Made a lot more money away from the yard, but no where near the job sanctification.

Something not finished on the hull? Exposed equipment that still needed to be protected from the elements? They just seemed out of place on a submarine hull.
