I got a tour of the EB shipyard in Groton , CT when working for NNS on the Virginia Class program. Was taken inside a covered dock where they had the USS Nautilus, the 1st nuclear powered US sub, in for repairs. From the 1st to the most current at that time.
Awesome video. Ex bubble head on USS Bergall SSN-667 in the late 80’s. Wouldn’t trade the experience for anything.
X-ray welder at EB QP checking in. I welded those hulls also ( 2b - 3a- 3b) . Love seeing the final result. Makes all the burns and pain I receive in the process worth it. Nice job Newport news! Love this country and the product we deliver to the Navy 🇺🇸

Can u tell any secrets about the sub?
i worked at EB and tested the ship control system on the first Virginia class sub. EB did a good job with that, replacing the diving and steering controls with "swim by wire". I also worked at EB several years before in the shock test group. Pretty impressive how they go to Aberdeen Maryland and detonate things
Thank You for your service to our great nation !!
Was privileged to be able to work on these beautiful machines during my time in the USN. These are awe inspiring.

Actually, I think that's just a shroud so the top secret propulsion system can't be photographed. Nice try though.
Many years ago it was my honor, after security clearance, to be invited to the launching of a Santa Fee class Nuclear submarine in Groton Conn.. We were allowed to walk through the interior construction facility, were other subs were in various phases of construction. The technology on display we beyond mind-bending. I had never seen anything outside of NASA at this level of technology. Truly amazing. btw: The sub was launched in the dead of winter. It gracefully slide into the bay where several tugboats were awaiting.

Submariners are a huge part of our defence, I'm very fortunate to have these people protecting our freedoms that so many have fought for, just want to say thank you for your service and dedication to your country, I'm grateful to all of you. 🇺🇸🙏
Political.
These submariners are not for the defence of the USA but for the imposition of the American model away. Remember Vietnam , Irak and other countries. Very hypocrite.
Why do americans think they are the only ones that have freedom?
It is reasonable to interpret the North's nuclear submarine as meaning an SSB equipped with nuclear warheads and ballistic missiles, and as North Korea's official announcement has always been, it is confusing its opponents with vague expressions and falsehoods. However, it seems true that efforts are being made to increase the weight and range of ballistic missiles mounted on SSBs and to increase the quietness of the platform, and even conventional submarines, North Korea's strength in ballistic missiles, including South Korea, is not satisfactory. It is also true that the ultimate counter for this is a nuclear submarine.
I love the two portaloos on the deck!
Well that wouldn't be stressful at all. Incredible. As a former tug deckhand, I don't envy anyone involved in that move. Pretty expensive whoopsies possible.
[09/10/20] Look at the massive size of that Top Secret pump jet drive. I suppose they were pioneered with the Seawolf class? How thick is the steel on the outer hull? ⅜"? ½"? What about the pressure hull" 1"? Must be at least HY-100 steel.

I lived in N.N. from 60 to 67, when there were still houses on the same street as the shipyard. We went swimming where they build carriers now. You could walk up to the fence & see the giant propellors for the Enterprise then the JFK. Amazing that they kept the prop hidden while launching the sub, maybe a high tech design for silence.
@Kojii Naz like... I knew that, I lived there when they built Polaris subs completely hidden from view. My father was a pipe fitter & worked on them.
They could show you the prop, but then they’d have to kill you.⚰️⚰️⚰️

Hello
When did they start naming fast attacks after states? Amazing to see something this big and heavy come out on rollers and back out into a dry dock. When I was in I had the privilege to walk in the dry dock in Pearl while a fast attack was up on blocks and just run my hand along the hull. Very cool.
Virginia-class subs are generally named after U.S. states, with some exceptions, i.e. Warner and Rickover...

Worked at Groton, one night we were working on the dry dock with a 688 on blocks. Said to my partner how cool it would be to walk beneath the Sub, walked under, stood there, looked up at the giant hull, wished we had a camera, but we knew better, that's a big no-no,but it was a once in a life time opportunity!
Beautiful vessel, named after my state! Why so slow on the blur 2:42?
Josh Endo There's nothing special about what's behind the blur.... Trust me.
Ok. Then why bother blurring at all.
For some reason, they blurred the VLS-section. But everyone(even Wiki) knows that now this section contains two 6-cell VLS blocks similar to those on Ohio SSGN.))

The floating dry dock was brought in during my time there ‘86-89. I was able to see the last launch off a declevity. Lots of interesting work at NNS. Noticed the propulsion was covered which they did during my time but I wonder what else along the hull is covered up?
Openings in the hull for cooling water which could reveal information about the reactor power systems. Also, openings for countermeasures.

The three black tarps hanging off of each side are covering up the side sonar arrays. The blurred-out area at the front of the sub is concealing the Virginia Payload Tube, which replaced multiple individual cruise missile launch tubes with one big tube that can carry seven cruise missiles (or other ordnance) inside of it. The VPT was first installed on the Block 3 Virginia subs, of which this sub (SSN 789) is one. The newest Block 5 subs are going to have an additional 70 feet of length added to them so that four more VPTs can be installed near the center of the boat, which will allow them to carry an additional 28 Tomahawk cruise missiles. They are doing this because the first four Ohio-class subs, which were converted from nuclear missile-carrying subs (SSBNs) to cruise missile-carrying subs (SSGNs) and can each carry a whopping 154 Tomahawks, are all now 40+ years old and are very near retirement.

Notice the prop is covered. The shape of the thing is classified. Look at the Google Maps satellite photo of the sub pens at Point Loma. On each of the docked subs, the area of the prop is distorted in the photo. I'm guessing that the shape of the prop is an important part of why modern subs are so fast, and so quiet. Good job, guys!
Yep. And the navy is *very* aggressive about protecting its design.
About the only things more closely guarded are the comm codes and the sonar suite.

I remember when I was a kid, I was in the NJROTC (Navy Junior Reserve Officer’s Training Corps). Our group visited a submarine base in King’s Bay, near Valdosta, Georgia. We stepped aboard a Trident class missile attack submarine. It was called the Benjamin Franklin. The bridge was like a spaceship. It was also being resupplied by the submarine tender on the starboard side. Among those supplies were torpedoes. A seaman scared us by jumping onto one. Thank God it was unarmed. A seaman told me “Don’t ever get on any of these boats.” I asked him why. He told me, “Because you won’t see the sun and you won’t see any women.” That was back in the early 80’s. I couldn’t join the military because I had scoliosis and the government didn’t want to take any chances. If I didn’t have scoliosis, I would serve until I made captain. I tried to join the U.S. Air Force. Same result. To those who have served or are still serving, thank you for all your dedication and courage.

The filling of the drydock woucld have been a nice bonus. Too bad it wasn’t captured. Did it happen overnight?
They don't fill it they lower it
They can’t show it. As you can see they conceal the propeller design and the black fabrics on the lower sides also hide sensitive designs and equipment. That is why they wait until dark to remove the fabrics and prop cover and lower it. Final photos also show blurred area at the bow most likely detection equipment or 45 degree launch tubes for cruise missiles but given how forward the mast is it most likely isn’t launch tubes.

I was working on the last overhaul/refueling of the Enterprise when I left in 92. Kills me to see her tied up at the pier awaiting a terrible fate. At about the 1:30 mark, there are, what look like black sheets on the starboard side about a third of the way up from the stern. Does anyone know why they're there? Concealing some sort of tech? Something not finished on the hull? Exposed equipment that still needed to be protected from the elements? They just seemed out of place on a submarine hull.
