I've been meaning to make this for a while.
I don't know if anyone remembers this game being developed, but I wanted to make sure there is was some evidence of it existing.
In may of this year [2023] the channel Xella studios and their war of the worlds game vanished, Xella was rebranded as a channel about projectors and all evidence of this game was lost. This video is a tribute to that game.
A lot of the information is from memory so it probably inaccurate, but I do have the videos to show for it. If you know more about Xella studios or have any more videos or media from this project. please let me know in the comments.

"Thank you Xella for trying to make a War of the Worlds game" I think that's a nice sentiment; even if it disappeared into the ether, at least there was an attempt, an effort made even if early and basic. The video of the big city attack certainly had a great atmosphere to it, what with the silhouetting and lighting outside of the apartment. Thank you, Xella for fuelling the fire of imagination and what could-be. And thank you, Triple DE, for bringing this to light. Seems this was a real "flash in the pan" because I saw nothing on this even though I was following the game that Raf and FlipSwitch games are making for steam; I'd expect KZhead to recommend that on similarity alone. Also nice tone-setting with White Noiz: silent hill music really fits these sorts of mysteries well. Looking forward to the video on the Roblox WotW game. Heard something was up but all I've heard is whispers and conjecture for now, so I've been keeping off that trail for a good while. Thanks for the video and the content. Look forward to what you put out next!

Let me add some things to this topic here. 1. Xella Studios had a fourth video when I first found the channel, shot from inside a tripod's cage as it strode across the terrain at night. It sounded off a very loud horn at one point, so I assume this is the extra video with the custom tripod sound you mentioned? 2. The attack on the city was featured in someone else's video on KZhead, where it was revealed to be a demo (the gameplay started at that scene right when the uploader hit the play button, so presumably every other video was behind the scenes and not part of the demo. The uploader even noclipped out of the apartment and followed the tripods for a while before giving us a close up of some of them. I don't know if that video's still up. I'll try and find it later. 3. The air raid siren heard in the demo was different than the one heard in this video. It was much lower pitched than the one in this video. (Someone actually included it in a nearly 8 hour long ambience video on the movie, and it's heard intermittently throughout). I can't remember what siren was used in Xella's video, or if it was heard at all. 4. Someone in the comments for one of the videos mentioned that they should try and change the designs of the tripods to avoid copyright issues, which could be what they were going for with that modified tripod horn you mentioned, and is what the team behind the upcoming game is currently working on in the event they can't secure a licensing agreement. I suspect Xella may have gotten a cease-and-desist letter, and that's why they stopped working on the game. The upcoming game hasn't gotten one, though nothing playable's been actually released yet (sans, perhaps, on Patreon), while Xella evidently put out a demo, so that could be why Xella got C&D'ed.
I'm glad you made a video about this game, it really deserved to progress further. I got really hyped up when they reuploaded their gameplay videos with new description like "game will be running on Unreal Engine 5", I felt like Raf's game could have gotten a decent competition. It seems like the 2005 War of the Worlds is cursed when everyone wants to make a game about it because all of them are struggling to come out or just disappear. I really hoped to play Raf's game this Summer in open beta state or get the $100 somehow with only making money with my video game mods but that didn't happen, it's sad because next year I might not even have time to play it - If there will even be an open beta. Though I have the fear that all of these games would be only fun for about 3 hours because you've already went through a couple survival sessions and you'll know everything already, like The Forest. There is another War of the Worlds game btw, developed by Avenoir Studios, they made a teaser update about 2 months ago with the description "At last, we're back for the Summer". They already shared some game elements like the Tripods moving and the soundtrack which is actually really well made and emits anxiety, but those videos are way older. Also unning on Unity as Raf's game. I feel like that will be in the same situation as X Ella's because their Discord server barely has anything other than some 3 year olds drawing cringy artwork about tripods and no updates. X Ella's had too many projects going on in the same time, I don't know how many people tried to work on it but it must be about 3 or less, making 2 games at the same time from scratch is pure hell and you won't see the end especially if you rework core elements like trying to shift from another graphics engine. I am an Assetto Corsa modder and making a simple car mod from the ground-up (modeling, setting up the shaders in game, animations, physics etc) takes 2 months on average, just imagine making a whole game then. Roblox games are nice but Roblox limits everything so hard. Those quick-turning tripods, the bugs are all keeping me away from playing them but I'm not blaming anyone as those are also just as hard to do as the aforementioned games. Gleaming Titans Haunt the Skies is the most professionally made WOTW game so far but I feel like that stopped too because there hasn't been any updates on their channel since more than two months. There is War of the Worlds: Confrontation too but that disappeared in the shadow realm it seems. Like I said it's really said how all of these games just can't come out, WOTW 2005 is my favorite movie of all time and I still have some nightmares about the tripods coming to where I live and hiding (Just had a dream a day ago lol), but all of them are fun and fulfills the dire need of a decent survival game about the genre, haha. I wish there would be an AAA dev seeing the huge demand this would have and make an exceptional game about it with license from Paramount themselves. Thanks for making the video!
Thanks for commenting, It really seems like there is a curse on a 2005 war of the worlds game as I two was hyped for this game and others, but they just keep falling off development wise or disappear completely. I also never understood why no one saw an opportunity to make a game off that concept before. I can definitely imagine the workload you and Xella studios have to go through to create mods and games, the effort and time to make them is often underappreciated to make the final product and I highly respect that. As for Avenoir studios, I didn't even know they existed until this comment, thanks for letting me know about them. From what I see it does have potential like the rest of these games, but we haven't seen much gameplay other than a shot inside of a house with a tripod walking and some models. but from what you said about their discord while concerning, I am still hoping it will develop in the near future. About War of the worlds confrontation, It has ceased development tragically after a poll on their discord even though they were making great progress and content creators like Kit were hyping it up, after that happened they went through a massive rebranding and other crap. I will go further into that in my roblox war of the worlds recap. But I will say that I wasn't around or cared for any of the drama or other events that went on, its just a big mess that I couldn't really keep track of, so its hard to know what happened with all these different roblox games and discord servers. As a devoted fan of War of the worlds I am also frustrated that a tripleA company hasn't decided to make a survival game of it yet either. But I still have hope for Raf's game and all the others in development to provide a healthy competition to Raf's as well. Thanks
I've always wanted to play this game and downloaded the demonstration because they orignally left a demonstration game file under their videos only to find that it was not compatible with my chromebook. Then the channel hasn't uploaded for a long time and then discovered the flipswitch war of the worlds game and forget all about the x ella game. To be honest, I found the x ella game good.
