  • I had a St Bernard named Beethoven a 225 pound male, not fat but MASSIVE. He was the sweetest most loving dog ever. It has been 25 years since he left us but I still miss him to this day. When walking him, he drew a crowd EVERYWHERE I went. People wanted to pet him, take pictures with him. He was always happy to meet new people, he loved children.

  • Growing up with Newfoundlands, as well as lover of large breeds, I have never understood the "too big" thing. Many large breeds are totally chill, non-barkers, and fabulous family pets, just as you have seen here. Yes, they slobber, but to me the only down side is that they do not live long.

    • Maybe it's all the grooming and brushing you have to do. It's a lot of dog to brush compared to a little Yorkie or a Chihuahua!

      @Flanneryschickens@Flanneryschickens4 жыл бұрын
    • Oh there’s a tonne of reasons, the drool for some, the fur/hair on everything, the grooming, the far greater cost, and just the physical size they take up. I’d never have a dog that I didn’t have room for it to really run whenever it wanted to, just for me personally walking on a lead isn’t enough. Luckily I have all the room in the world for my monster fluffy dog and don’t care about the other things. I can fully understand why not everyone could handle or want a huge animal like that though.

    • @Darth Traya Agreed. Saddens me what has been done to this breed, like the newfoundland they are victims of 'teddybearification'. They have been bred ever bigger and more extreme. The head is almost brachycephalic now with all the health issues that entails and their coats are too long and inappropriate for a mountain climate (would retain water). The modern saint bernard is a far cry from their ancestors sadly with too much loose skin and loose eye rims.

  • I grew up with a Saint Bernard, a female named Anastasia that lived to be 13 and was 130lbs. As kids my brother and I would lay on the floor and use her as a pillow while watching TV. She was always loving and gentle, except for one single time. My dad was out of town and someone tried to break into our back door, and that was the only time I ever heard her growl or bark like that, and it was very different from when she was playing. Whoever was trying to get in went home with his hands empty and his pants full. She slept by that door every night until my dad was back home.

  • As an owner of a 5 year old St Bernard I can’t overstate how gentle and calm they are. I had a German Shepherd before and she was always barking and super aggressive to strangers and other animals to the point she couldn’t be off leash. My 150 lbs Saint Bernard got attacked and bit by an off leash chihuahua in my yard. She was so confused about why it didn’t wanna be her friend . Also, she doesn’t bark without a serious reason. I also had a Golden Retriever and he was big but still 6lbs lighter... I actually had both at the same time and even though he was 13 years old and she was 2 he was the one pushing her to play all the time. Most people don’t realize those medium size dogs are WAY more energetic and eat more than Giant breeds who are content leaning against you rather then running laps..

  • I raised a Saint Bernard. She was a petite Saint, about 107 lbs, and absolutely beautiful, a real head-turner. She had all of the health problems we dread for a giant breed, which cost a lot of money. All I can say is, it was worth it. Every day with my Saint was better than any day without her. It's a special breed, and an extraordinary experience to raise a Saint. Jasmine was irreplaceable and so tomorrow I begin to raise my first Newfoundland! :)

    @DG-zv4bl@DG-zv4bl4 жыл бұрын
    • Funny thing about the movie Cujo, they almost replaced the eponymous dog from Stephen King’s book with a German Shepherd instead because they were having a very hard time getting their actor Saint Bernard to even pretend like they were vicious. In the end, they managed, though. SB’s are such sweet dogs, through and through.

  • I remember encountering a St Bernard many years ago. A friend had told me that St Bernards are loving, calm dogs. Their friendliness is likely to offset an initial fear of approaching a large dog. However, I have read, that they are equally quick to protect family members who they believe are in danger. The breed is exceptionally patient with children. I must admit, my own experience with this breed is limited. I remember the films and stories. The video is informative and I enjoyed watching it!

    @karlchandran4631@karlchandran46314 жыл бұрын
    • Yes what you say is true they’re extremely family oriented and good with children but can be extremely protective of their human. The male in this video looks just like my boy he is 165lbs and does not like some men. He will not let a male pass by me on the same side of the street he will growl and if they keep coming he will lunge at them which actually makes me hesitant to take him out for walks in his defense a couple of them seemed sketchy. He is such a loving sweet bug guy but definitely don’t want to get on his bad side I have a few friends with the breed and they too say the same thing they aren’t fond of some men although we have not be able to determine why they’re selective.

      @gigig3623@gigig36234 жыл бұрын
    • @@gigig3623 I've grown up with saints, I can honestly say. There is no real rhyme or reason. I can say that I've found a few things. 1. They will feel off or your emotions as well as the stranger. 2. A good harness, helps with control and lunging. 3. I'm all for the dog being protective, as my current saint is very protective over my young son and wife. Which I love, it gives me peace of mind. But he knows the command. For him to stop, and when he is told the command. He lays or sits or continues on the walk and leaves whom or what ever it is alone. But , that's what works and has worked me. I love saints and have grown up with them. They are gentle giants and just very protective over their family. Which isn't surprising lol.

Loved kids and was a natural guardian . Very protective of me . In fact no one got closer to me than him . • I love these dogs! I got to babysit one for 3 months, and she was amazing. I would take her to the woods and everywhere else with me, and even for a young dog, she seemed to know things. I was told to never let her off the leash (obviously day 1 we went to the woods, and she never left my sight). I felt awful though returning her, as 6 months later when I went to the home to say hi and talk to the owner/pick her up she bolted out of the front door. At the time I had a tiny car and my drivers side window was open. So as the owners and people in the home feared the worse when she bolted outside, I calmly walked outside and assured them she's not really a bolter, just bored. Alll 180lbs of her jumped through my drivers side window and was waiting in the passenger seat for adventure! I knew she was not getting the stimulation and exercise she needed (never mind letting her do her work which was to pretty much explore a boarder around me and come back when the coast was clear). She was super sweet, super smart, and was perfectly good in an apartment with NO YARD in the middle of a big city because I would take her on hikes with my wolfy husky mutt/Pittbul mutt. She never "bolted" it was more just securing the area then returning to play when things were safe. The wolfy husky would bolt after deer/bears/coyotes with MY other dog, but all would return on their own. They knew where the food/rest/care was, and that was with me. Very loyal breed, especially considering her recall was better than my 3 year old dogs bread as bear dogs in the north. Love the breed.

  • Love watching this lady, every once in a while in a litter, there will be a 100% throw back, an Alpine Mastiff, which looks like the original, I had one, fiercest dog I have ever seen. He was afraid of nothing, once when taking him to board, was going on trip, he got out of the car and 4 giant pits parted and got out of his way, their owners said they had never seen these dogs get out of anythings way before. he grew to a massive 170-175 lbs. and had a mastiff stroke just past his 12th birthday. Most protective and loving dog ever, also super smart. East Germans had one when they were studying dogs for best dog for their military, found the dog had the power to reason like a human, only problem is when they get 2 and a half to 3 years old, they will turn on their owner. Luckily I knew about this and took precautions, when he was 2.75 years old, he turned we went round and round, luckily I had placed a German finger collar on him with a 6 inch leash, after a while I let go and he jumped over the sofa and sat there and growled at me. Was not worried because he was a silent attacker if he was growling he was warning not attacking. Then I looked away from him and ignored him, he came up to me sat down, put his head on my shoulder and licked my face, recognizing me as the alpha male. He would split 2x4's with his teeth for fun, if had friends over he would always sleep near the smallest or youngest, incredible guard dog. When he died called reputable breeders all over the world and they all knew about the throw back, but all are put to sleep at birth, too dangerous and did not want to get sued. The Alpine Mastiff is the original Saint, but except for the throwback are extinct. The best friend I ever had. Sadly will never have another...But still love the Saints, especially the short hair, as they are closer to the original... Thanks Anneka, keep up the GReeeaatt videos.

  • My first dog was a Saint Bernard that my parents got before my older brother was born in 1987 and she died of natural causes in 1995 when I was 6, so this was before the Beethoven movies. Speaking from experience, they really are good with small children, they do drool a lot, and I do remember my dad having to take her to the vet on a fairly semiregular basis. We had a nice backyard with a pool and she swam like a Newfoundland, so that plus AC helped her put up with Northern Californian summers. She was such a sweetheart. To this day seeing this breed melts my heart. I think my dad insisted on a Saint Bernard probably because he thought that was the dog breed featured in J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan, which in actuality was a Newfoundland. However, I too made this same mistake in childhood based solely on the 1953 Disney version, but in my defense, these two breeds are not only physically similar and great with small children, but J.M. Barrie did actually have both breeds and featured a Saint Bernard and a Newfoundland in his works. Bottom line: my dad picked the right family dog with a Saint Bernard.

  • I just love Animal watch videos. They are so useful, educational, fascinating and addictive. So many amazing beautiful animals with different qualities and characteristics. By the way, no dog is 'too' big. Big is beautiful too. There are many excellent reasons for dogs to be generally large in size due to the work they do such as rescue, pulling people out of rivers and ditches, pulling sledge and rides, challenging dangerous and potential predators and so forth. I hope more people can understand the beauty and the importance of dogs in human every day life, including the wonderful companionship they give. Such beautiful creatures.

  • My 5 month old St. Bernard is snuggled up next to me as I watch 🥰 he really is so calm and AMAZING with my 6 yr old. Ive been debating getting him certified as my sons support dog because of how bonded and emotionally intuitive he is with him, it’s incredible. He also comes after my Newfie who passed a couple years ago, and I had no idea they were crossbred to preserve the breed! Makes sense, both are such amazingly big babies. I will never understand people who think big dogs aren’t worth the trouble...I’d trust a massive Bernie with my child over any smaller breed lol My mother recently got a bernadoodle puppy (Bernese mountain dog/poodle) and he is a big sweetheart too.

  • I had a St.Bernard in Canada called Heidi. The best dog I was lucky enough ever to own. Her bark would scare off any would be intruder, however once I introduced her to any visitor, she would never forget their scent. Even years later, she would greet that visitor with a wagging tail. And with children she was wonderful, she realised they were children and was so tolerant of their behavior. Just a wonderful family dog, you couldn't wish for better.

Now I have my wonderful baby boy, who is turning 8 this year. They may be big and drool alot, but trust me, getting this dog will bring you happiness 😊

  • After watching this it saddens me to know these beautiful, caring and lovable dogs live short lives. It has always for me been one of those things in life when I wish our loyal pets could live just as long as us humans do, there is something wrong with this, can be so heart-breaking losing a loyal friend.

  • I had a St.Bernard. He was a wonderful pet. He loved the cats and was great with kids. He was a big boy, he was 91.4cm (36 inches) at the shoulder and weighed in at 94kg ( 208 lbs). They make wonderful pets if you have to room for them and train them at a young age. You need to brush the long hair ones a lot.
