  • I had a friend with a big black Newfoundland. He was driving back to his cottage one night when he saw the dog running beside the car. He phoned his wife and asked "Who let Augie out?" His wife replied "Augie is laying here by the fireplace." It was a good thing he called because it was really a black bear bounding along beside his car.

  • My Newfie sleeps next to me every night and goes away once I am asleep. The moment I wake up to go to the loo or drink water, she comes back and resumes her position next to me, only for me to fall asleep for her to sneak away. It is as if she thinks it’s her duty to be next to me when I sleep. Best breed on the planet :)

  • This breed of dog is the absolute best best ever. When I was young, I had the pleasure of meeting 2 of the best examples of Newfoundland dogs I had ever seen. They belonged to my grandfather. These were working dogs, and I mean really working in the traditional roles these dogs were used. My grandparents lived in a small fishing town in Newfoundland (pronounced New-Fin-Land by those from there) that was in a harbour on the east side of Trinity Bay. My grandfather would get up before dawn and head down to his boat every morning followed by the dogs. Each dog carrying various equipment down to the boat for him. When he went out fishing, only one would join him each alternating days, which they did on their own taking turns. They were there in case my grandfather missed the floats for the nets. If he missed the float with the hook, the dogs would automatically jump in retrieve the float for him, then climb back into the boat via the platform my grandfather had added to the back of his boat. They would stand in the boat no matter the conditions on the water. That would not be impressive if you didn't know they were fishing from what we called a punt (pretty much just an extended row boat with a motor on the back and a place for a couple oars) in the open waters of the Atlantic. The one that was left behind would sit for hours, looking out at the water from the dock, and wouldn't move until they returned. When they returned the one on the dock would jump in the water to grab the rope and haul the boat in. When the fishing was done in the morning the dogs would join him for lunch (never fed anything other than table scraps and raw fish). After lunch, it was back to work, this time with the one that didn't go fishing. On to the horse and cart and off to the forest to gather wood. When the bush was thick and the horse couldn't get in, the dog was harnessed up to the log and they would pull it out of the woods to where the horse was. The time these dogs were happiest was when they were working, or spending time with us kids. They loved spending time with us, but loved their jobs more. I love seeing this breed and seeing others experience what I did. I just wish that more people could see what these dogs are like when used in their traditional roles. If you think of getting one of these, be careful on the water. If they happen to be on a boat and something falls into the water, you will be fishing a dog out of the water. Most just instinctively jump when something falls off the boat.

    @SavageToodles@SavageToodles4 жыл бұрын
    • T.O.Toodles That sounds amazing to experience. I hope people continue to use these dogs in their traditional working role so it won’t be bred out of them. I hope to, one day, have a herd of these dogs for our family.

    • I wonder if the breed is stubborn bc it is aware of its massive size. It knows it cannot be stopped in most cases, so it's going to do what it wants to do anyway. Thankfully the breed isn't aggressive, so the worst it's going to do is get wet, eat, and move furniture out of its way.

      @CC-si3cr@CC-si3cr6 ай бұрын
    • @@CC-si3cr That's part of it but while they were bred to work alongside people they are also independent thinkers and are known for doing things on their own, such as rescuing someone that's drowning. They have a certain pride and intelligence which I think also contributes to them sometimes being a little stubborn. I know with Cricket, some things like a bath, were below her dignity and she'd do things to try and get out of having a bath or be like ok, what's in it for me. It's not that I couldn't give her a bath but I had to make it worth her while. She was very sensitive to people and things going on around her and just did things she thought needed to be done. True, they are by nature not aggressive dogs but they can be fierce protectors when they need to be. I experienced a side of Cricket I didn't think possible one time when a stranger was in my house. He was a new meter man and for some reason she did not like him. Picture a 130 pound snarling, snapping, and growling Newfie. I actually feared for this man's life and told him to get out fast when he came up from the basement. She was dragging me across the floor trying to get at him. She had never done this with a stranger, and never did it again, so I knew something was not right with this man. Found out from my usual meter man, that man was fired a couple of weeks later for stealing.

One day, while sitting in her car waiting for whoever, she noted all the kids playing & this huge Newfie laying about on the sidewalk. A stranger approached (salesman, ?) the dog allowed him to pass. The man asked a question or 2 of the kids. (He was near her car). He turned to go & noted the slight pressure on his ankle. He tried to walk, the pressure increased. Each time he moved, it increased. He got the message. Called to my aunt, told her he meant the kids no harm & could she call someone for help. He needed both legs in his line of work, I guess. It all ended well. He was ok, but a little on the loud side and very talkative. During the conversation our boy got between the man and myself, then I could start to feel pressure for our boy on my legs so I would have to take a step back. • I have a Bernefie (Bernese Mountain Dog x Newfoundland) and he is the sweetest, most loving, 115 lbs lap dog you will ever meet. He isn't trained for it, but if ever start to cry he will run to me from across the house, jump into my lap and lick my face or hands until I stop, and then cuddle me for another 10 minutes after. He has so many Newfie qualities and is stubborn but so gentle, and I am so blessed to have him in my life.

    • From what I've read and heard from other dog owners, Newfies, Golden Retrievers, Bernese Mountain Dogs, and Bichon Frises are all basically tied for the friendliest, happiest, and most people pleasing dogs you'll ever find. I had a Bichon for 16 years and I can attest to that being the case for Rudy. My wife grew up with Goldens and she says they're just as well behaved as Rudy was. Now we're looking for either a Newfie or a Bernese Mountain Dog to pair with the Great Pyrenees we have, but everyone is getting dogs during the covid crisis so we can't find one anywhere.

But living in rural Cornwall he's covered in mud a lot of the time and so is our home, but he's with us all the time and we are known by the people in our village as the couple with the big black dog or Odin's owners. Even the postman loves him. When we collected Odin that day five years ago, the lady in this film was tearful as we took him away. Just to let her know he's been totally healthy and happy since that day. If you really want a Newfie this is the breeder to go to. Thanks to Tzar and Malika (Odin's parents) and inkomostud.

  • I fell in love with this breed when I was a little kid Warning sad story So when I was a little kid there was a Newfoundland who lived around the corner and his name was Bruno. Now Bruno was a very sweet dog but with a bit of a sad story. He was always chained to a tree in the front yard of the house, his fur was always very dirty, he drank the rain water that filled his dish, his food always looked really gross, and in comparison to other male Newfies he was very skinny. And around here the summers can get around 100 degrees F and with a thick black coat that’s no fun, and the winters in the negative teens if he wasn’t a Newfie I fear he would’ve frozen to death. But despite this harsh treatment Bruno was just a sweet bundle of love. Whenever me or my siblings rode our bikes we’d always go and visit him he’d immediately perk up wag and his tail you could tell random small amounts of love meant the world to him he’d always cry or howl as you began to walk away. And whenever he slipped out of the chain he’d walk around the corner to our front door as if he were trying to say “hi you are all so nice to me, can I live with you?” And sadly we’d have to walk him back every time. I wish I knew to report the animal abuse or that my parents would but I guess they didn’t want any trouble. After about 4 years Bruno disappeared one day I hope he got the loving home he deserved but I fear that his ticks or a big dog health problem caught up with him. But I will always remember the worlds sweetest dog and what made me love Newfies and when I get my first Newfie if it’s a male I’m naming him Bruno. Hope my story wasn’t too sad have a good day to whoever read this much.

Love big farm dogs to be in the home and feel their love, safety and protection. I adore all dogs. The first Newfie visit occurred when checking to see my good friend and her family. We went next door, and I met the Newfie. They said watch the dog... we were all outside. I just said 'Hello' as I do with all dogs, and told him how beautiful he was, and the next instant this gorgeous black dog was eyeball to eyeball with me, paws on my shoulders and I was elated. It was a fantastic first meeting and I have been in love with them ever since!
