Bonjour à tous,
This week at the chateau, the family get a extra helping hand with the return of Ash's dad Graham and work starts on starting to insulate the kitchen on the third floor of the chateau, a room that has not changed in decades.
Terry carries on with all the little detail jobs on the third floor, adding lights to the DIY canopy, and Tracy pops over to help out with a little painting in the hallway and salon on the third floor.

About us,
We are a family from the North-East of England following our dream to restore a beautiful abandoned french Château. We discovered the heart stopping Château De Lalacelle in summer of 2020, this beautiful architectural monument Is set in the countryside of North-West France.
The moment we visited the Château we all fell in love, from the beautiful sweeping landscape and forests, to its stunning untouched interiors and magnificent spiral staircase in the turret.
Unfortunately Château De Lalacelle has been abandoned for a number of decades so will need a lot of restoration and DIY.
Please subscribe and follow our families journey, with the up’s and down’s in moving from the UK to rural France and restoring this beautiful building to its former glory.

  • Tony does a lot of work around the place but because he is pretty quiet I don't think he gets near enough recognition. Everyone should give a big shout out to Tony!

  • Insulate, insulate, insulate... you will never regret it... to keep things warm and draft proof in winter and cool in summer.. Don't forget to use lots of vapor barrier to prevent mold and mildew and reduce drafts. Great project demonstration to inspire us in our own DIY projects. Thanks. Of course being a Canadian, I would use loads more insulation for our colder climate.

  • Just a suggestion with having 14 people helping. Come up with a written list of jobs, from the very small to the major things. Have it posted for all to see. This way they will not have to alway ask what can I do to help? If they have a spare few minutes after completing one job they can cross off another thing from the list. No job is too small. Enjoy watching so much.

And those angles and corners looked like a total measuring nightmare ... but as Ash said, the difference to get the insulation and plasterboard in place and cut off the draughts must be amazing. Clever idea with the LEDs in the bed canopy (and nice that you didn't edit out the sweet peck from Ash as you were fitting them). The feeling of achievement when you guys are able to move in will be extraordinary. 🥰

  • I am amazed you didn’t put rockwool insulation behind the knee wall. Critters (mice, squirrels, etc.) don’t like rockwool snd will avoid it. It is made from rocks and does not burn. It does not transmit heat or cold and does not produce harmful gasses. • A lot happening indeed. That cold snap was quite the April 1st surprise. What ventilation system is in place to keep air moving behind the insulation on the third floor? The lime mortar and wood needs to breathe to prevent moisture build up causing rot, mold, and mildew issues. The healh of the wood and stone walls is dependent on sufficient airflow. Excess moisture, rot, mold, and mildew is prevented by vents in the eves to draw air in with exit vents along the ridge and hips of the roof. The other issue I see is attaching the foil insulation directly to the untreated wood. Trapped moisture or condensation is going to settle in the small gaps where the wood and the foil touch. To prevent rot, we add strips of treated wood to the beam, and then attach the nonporous insulation material to the treated wood. The existing beams will only suck up moisture/condensation like a sponge where the foil touches it. If there is no venting behind the insulation I recommend consulting an expert. Vent may need to be added along the base of the interior walls between each beam and roof joist/rafter to ensure there is sufficient airflow to prevent rot, mold, and mildew issues. Another option is installing vent fans to draw air in from around the slates and out through vent pipes near the ridge ensuring plenty of air flow. Forgive me if such measures were co even in a prior vlog. Cheers!
