This fascinating interview with Dr Sohail Hanif looks to uncover the secrets of Ramadan. What should the month indeed mean to believers? And what should we be striving to achieve this month? How should we treat its minutes and hours? And how do we know whether, as the hadith suggests, we have lost its blessings or gained success out of it?
Dr Sohail is the Chief Executive of the National Zakat Foundation. He previously held the position of BA Manager and Lecturer at Cambridge Muslim College and has also held the position of Head of Sciences at Qasid Arabic Institute in Amman. He studied extensively with traditional scholars and holds a PhD from Oxford University. His PhD thesis, which explores Islamic legal epistemology, won the 2019 prize of the British Association for Islamic Studies. He has lectured widely on Islamic law and Qur’anic studies in academic, public and traditional settings.

As a Palestinian American I always knew what would happen to Gaza, with so many Americans openly all my life saying we don't exist or we soon won't, what else could've happened. What is the biggest surprise to me is that I always thought the Muslim world would stand up for the Muslim children being erased from the Earth. Breaks my heart to see that I am wrong. I look forward to an Arab world with a better belief system that will hopefully protect everyone but especially the innocent.
True. State of our ummah is really weak, but to be honest, we should stop setting expectations from arab leaders and stop considering "arab world" as a thing. Arabs are just a subset of Muslims, and we need to work towards a stronger ummah/Muslim world ensuring focus isn't on Arabs as leaders anymore.

Just only the Arab world world with better belief system and not rest of the Muslims. I find this ironic that Muslims all over the world are in pain due to Gaza and Arab only think about arabs as always. The Arab considered non arab to be nin Muslims and I find the people from Lebanon, syria and phalistine to be racist towards SE. My heart goes out to Gazan and phlistinians. May Allah grant them peace and they can return to their homes.
May Allah give Muslim ummah the unity and they take inspiration from Gazans' strength of iman to fight against the Evil in the world. Allah has rewarded the Gaza Muslims with eternal heavens, may We be guided towards the same path that the Gazans have taken. Ameen
I hear you and we should all do more. If we do not like something we should try to change it. We need work hard to convince our Muslim brothers and sisters to move closer to Allah and become a better society. We need to be more organized and more effective. We need to rise up against despotic regimes that control most of the Muslim Ummah and unlock the power that those countries actually have. I am a Palestinian Canadian Muslim and I have been touched by the support and love I got from fellow Muslims in Canada. To many Muslims I know who are not Palestinians, the 15,000 children murdered in Gaza are just as much their children, they are also having a hard time sleeping and suffering just like we are.
Fasting, as I age, makes me iller and iller. The approach of Ramadan is the approach of a test and it something that stresses me as it approaches. I see it as a long journey across a dessert without adequate provision. But that test is a gift and passing through that dessert leaves me happier than I was before it and stronger in faith. I feel bad when I hear those who are enthusiastic about this month because I don’t share their excitement. I’m glad to hear that both excitement and apprehension have their reward.

The word 'Ramadan' is mentioned only once in the Quran, and Allah connects it with the Quran itself. 'Ramadan is the month in which the Quran was revealed.' That's very unique because you might think Ramadan would be linked to fasting. That's what makes some Muslims less enthusiastic about Ramadan, as they associate it with hunger, thirst, and restraint. But if you connect Ramadan with the Quran, it will be much easier to feel enthusiastic about it.
Excellent advice. Not, well really never on this channel, your every day Ramadan lecture. Really gives you something definitive and transformative.
