Justin Gaethje is a professional prize fighter currently based out of Arvada Colorado.
Gaethje started wrestling with his twin brother when they were four-year-olds back home in Safford, Arizona. After two high school state championships, he chose UNC for the season changes, the snow, the city of Greeley, the chance to get away from bad influences back home, and most importantly, wrestling.
He arrived at UNC in 2007 and went on to earn the first Division I All-American honors in the program's history, earning seventh place in the 2010 nationals.
He dipped into MMA when fighters trained with his wrestling team on campus at The University of Northern Colorado. He started taking amateur fights during summers, fighting and winning a total of seven times. He earned his nickname, "The Highlight," because he'd just pick people up and slam them down, he says. After all, he'd never trained for MMA or learned fighting technique.
Even if he didn't have formal training in his early fighting days, he had what his current coach Trevor Wittman, owner of Grudge Training Center in Arvada, calls the "walk of a champion." Gaethje is coachable, willing to learn, makes good intuitive decisions while fighting, does more than he's asked, has a will to win, and will do anything for anybody.
Many of those qualities stood out as Gaethje studied Human Services at UNC. One of his professors, Jill Bezyak, says he could always make the class laugh, especially if he sensed his classmates getting tense.
"He's one of those people that, probably without knowing it, works to help other people feel better," Bezyak says. "He can operate at whatever level is needed."
He takes that sense with him both into the human services field - he wants to work with at-risk youth when he retires from fighting - and into the cage.

    @evanparrafx@evanparrafx2 жыл бұрын
    • Savage or STUPID. So, I'm going to go with stupid while you go with "savage." And as it turned out, the results agree with my assessment, not yours. And given the fact that he can't seem to even buy a win in the UFC, I am going to double down on that stupid assessment because his fight IQ is one of the lowest I have ever seen for a "professional MMA fighter." He runs in with his hands down, head forward, and swings as if he's never had a boxing lesson in his life.

  • That Tony fight man.. still breaks my heart every time I see it. I remember being so excited to watch the first card after the pandemic started. I was rooting for El Cucuy, hoping that we’d FINALLY get to see the fight with Khabib. The entire lead up to that interim title fight was a string of probably the worst decisions in Tony’s life, none of which would have been a problem individually but collectively ended the career of one of my favorite fighters. He didn’t have to do that first weight cut just to show he could. He didn’t have to fight gaethje and risk his legacy and his historic win streak, could have just waited for the travel bans to be lifted and Khabib could return. Or he could have waited a month or two to fight Justin so that his body could recover from the first weight cut and he could properly train for the most dangerous opponent he ever faced. Idk man, I feel so sad every time I think of Tony that I barely even talk about him anymore.

As a person who has failed mentally so many times and chosen to take the easiest road and hope that someone else picks me up it's still difficult to understand people who have this frame of mind to the extreme. I could never be someone like these people whether it's my DNA or upbringing but I'm mentally weak. If I could live my life again and knew then what I know now you can bet your life I would do many things differently but how do you teach a young dreamer to be disciplined and focused. I'm too old and too permanently physically damaged to change much. At get a good feeling though from these warriors that if you want it and learn it early enough then tomorrow is your oyster!!

    • It was one of those career altering fights, no human can take a beating like that and be the same, very sad :( I hope Tony doesn't take another one of those against Chandler when they fight.

    • Tony did that to himself in the words of Teddy Atlas "he doesn't fight long" and he had 7" reach advantage of Justin, he said that about Dan Hooker but it applies on that fight as well.

  • I've just discovered your channel, on the first video still, but man this is the best compilation doc I've seen. The pace, build up, suspense, storytelling, editing and all that with publicly available material. Thank you so much for the time and effort that went into this. Your work reminds me of Walter Benjamin's essay The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction.
