Nice. I would recommend you invest in a dead-blow hammer though, they really are the best tool for knocking the part hard into a chuck or machine vice, perfect for getting the part sitting hard against a parallel strip. If you can't invest the money to buy one (there are some reasonably cheap ones) then invest some time and scrap to make one. It's just a soft faced hammer with a hollow head which is filled mostly full of steel or lead shot. The shot provides a second impact that helps prevent the part from bouncing back. Every machinist needs a dead-blow hammer, it was one of my first projects as an apprentice.

One would have to assume that if you're watching machining videos this subject interest you. At the time of posting my comment there are a mere 14 comments, yet there are 6,900 views! Does that mean that there are 6,886 aspiring machinists that find this hack commonplace? When the Lathe (only) is your focus this hack is brilliant! At the very least it's definitely not commonplace! This certainly deserves far more that the 294 current likes! The term "Hack" carries negative connotations but I'm adding my LIKE because this method deserves a hell of a lot more! Корявенько конечно вышло ,но предпосыл понятен будет многим ))) думаю в видео автор не придерживался линейных параметров, а просто на скорую руку показал краткий смысл изготовления шестигранника на токарном ..., молодец, учишь начинающих , хотя в этой процедуре нет ничего нового )) тема весьма затертая)

Надо ещё было вам добавить, что в случае если деталь вырвет, так как она держится не очень надёжно, то токарь (если останется жив и здоров ) испытывает очень яркие и глубокие положительные эмоции. Помню когда слесарь попросил отрезать кусок от резца высотой 32 мм, то от вибрации, так как работа на удар, кулачки приотжались ( а у резца стороны оказались не параллельны, это я уже потом выяснил)... и потом я выставлял переднюю бабку. И благодарил ангела -хранителя, видимо тому пришлось здорово поднапрячься.

So this is how my out of square (or hex?) Aliexpress hexagon ER32 collet chuck was made. This explains so much! Finally I understand how they managed to screw it up so incredibly bad.

Must have used the wrong plastic "machinist" triangle...I actually moved my head when he started that lathe with that dodgy "precision" setup jig.

@@edwardhugus2772 Haha I was hiding underneath my desk within half a second when he first started that setup.The precision machinist triangle he uses is not even the worst issue.. those thing can be pretty close to accurate from time to time.

At least halfway through he started using a backstop in order to stay on dimension so perhaps his next piece will be more accurate. Yes, the "trick" to making a hexagon is to use your handy 60-degree angle piece. Who would've thought of doing that? Very original.

You should explain how you proceed to obtain a regular hexagon with 6 identical faces and whose axis coincides with that of the starting cylinder.

He doesnt. This is the equivalent of "bucket chemistry" in machining. The best you get is a HSO 😁

He makes contact and then turns in a specific distance from that contact point. The first face is at a random place in space, the 2nd and 3rd are set by the protractor. The next 3 are just by spacing against the bar up against the face of the chuck. Straight forward but still very smart.

What’s not clear to me is how far into the piece do you advance the cutter when creating the faces of the hexagon, without doing the math. I must be missing a detail in the “bucket chemistry” mentioned here 😉

@@toddz8579 yep. You just cut them all to the same depth. That is all you need for a hexagon, 6 cuts to the same depth, and indexed somehow in 60 degree steps.

Unfortunately, he forgot to take a measurement somewhere, and then turn half of his hex width from each face. Then the outer contour would be good enough for a nut.

🙈 das tut weh beim zusehen, so viele schläge aufs Werkzeug und Vibrationen die der Maschine und deren Lager nicht gut tun. Bevor ich so mit einer Maschine und dem Werkzeug umgehe da Feile ich lieber per Hand und mit nen Winkelschleifer. Auch wenn die Technik auf den ersten Blick schlau ist, auf den 2. Blick kann man als Fachmann nur mit den Kopf schütteln. Grüße von einem Deutschen MAF Metall und Kunststofftechnik.

🙈 das tut weh beim zusehen, so viele schläge aufs Werkzeug und Vibrationen die der Maschine und deren Lager nicht gut tun. Bevor ich so mit einer Maschine und dem Werkzeug umgehe da Feile ich lieber per Hand und mit nen Winkelschleifer. Auch wenn die Technik auf den ersten Blick schlau ist, auf den 2. Blick kann man als Fachmann nur mit den Kopf schütteln. Grüße von einem Deutschen MAF Metall und Kunststofftechnik.
