Medvedev penalized for hindering HIMSELF

It's true you're now allowed to talk during a tennis point, but should that rule apply when a player speaks before their OWN shot, meaning they're only hindering themself? This chair umpire certainly thought so, and penalized Daniil Medvedev for apologizing to Alexander Bublik mid-point in Toronto. Is this one of the worst calls ever, or was the umpire correct to follow the rules to the letter?

  • So many confused people. Dude said sorry as the ball was coming at him. She called 'Hindrance" which is basically speaking to psych out the opponents swing. Only, he was the one swinging, so it's a dumb call. Even the other dude laughed that he got a point over that ridiculous call.

  • For anyone wondering you’re not allowed to say things during exchanges. It’s usually called a hindrance when the ball is coming towards you and the opponent says something to hinder or get you to react before your swing. The funny part here is that the guy top of court said something “sorry” o believe it was, and the judge ruled that he has committed a hindrance towards himself on his own swing. That’s why he said “I have the ball to hit, you don’t” and they laugh about it

An important thing to remember 1) not all rule books state specifics and 2) other rule books do. • @@AyoSteven.Official that's a VERY easy question to answer. Obviously, yes. Speaking, regardless of whether you're saying sorry or hello or making a knock knock joke, is not allowed in Singles points and is against the rules. It's been like that as long as I can remember. I played in M25 tournaments back in the day, many moons ago, which are ITF tournaments and speaking wasn't allowed. When I was a junior player in the US, ofc speaking is not allowed, USTA is strict against speaking during a point. It's always been a rule as long as I've been playing tennis. Grunting is allowed in all tennis matches and is not against the rules. You can't make a rule against grunting. If you tried, you'd be destroying the game by very severely limited the abilities of the players. I know exactly what you're referring to though, of course. The famous Sharapova scream (and many others, but hers is most famous). She actually received warnings and possibly point penalities (I can't remember clearly and haven't looked it up) for grunting unnecessarily loud. So it's not like it's okay to grunt excessively loud, it's moreso just a grey area that's hard to penalize. The opposing player can call hindrance and maybe that would nudge the chair umpire to regulate more strictly 🤷🏻‍♂️ Either way, some players that have been overly distracting with their unnecessarily violent grunts have been called out for it during their matches, but grunting loudly is not against the rules and never will be.

  • Medvedev was right. I had to look up what hindrance means: • When talking interferes with an opponent's ability to play a ball, it is a hindrance. For example, if a doubles player hits a weak lob and yells “get back” and the yell distracts an opponent who is about to hit the ball, then the opponent may claim the point based on a deliberate hindrance. Medvedev says sorry after hitting his opponent with the ball, however at that point it was Medvedev’s ball to hit. Therefore, Medvedev was not causing a hindrance to his opponent by saying “sorry”. A lot of tennis rules don’t make sense. Too many to list.
