The Last Passport (2009) is an uplifting, inspiring drama about a mysterious old man who enters a magical passport office (Purgatory). George meets characters from all walks of life, dispensing his homespun wisdom as they slip in and out of the lines. Most of the film takes place in a small passport office where interested characters sit around the room waiting for their time to check out and receive their passport.
The film was shot in just three days and the entire story was written, shot, edited, and scored in just 30 days and made for just $5000. It premiered at the Solstice Film Festival in Minneapolis, Minnesota where it won Best Actor (Jimmy Hager) and Best Director (Kent Smith and David Temple) in 2009. The story was written by Kent Smith, David Temple, and Alex Bailey. It stars Jimmy Hager (When We Last Spoke), Dave Blamy (Rings, The Taking of Deborah Logan), Bonnie Johnson (Dopesick, Manhunt) and Rachel St. Gelais (The Twilight Saga, The Blind Side).
The interesting part was the whole process was recorded and streamed to the internet and over 10,000 people watched live from their homes. The crew was made of mainly locals from the Charlotte, N.C. area. The film has been shown to film students on how to make a low budget film at different universities around the country.

  • I think the actor who played the old man’s role is Jimmy Hager. He is a great actor and played his role of a loveable old person in a fantastic way. In reality such people who are happy in any situation do exist in the world and everyone has to learn how to be content in what Providence has given us from such extraordinary personalities who otherwise look ordinary for the entire world. With such learning the entire world is a beautiful place for us to live in. Hearty congratulations to the entire team who has made this film. I hope Jimmy reads my comments about his acting. I am writing these comments from a faraway place but could not help expressing my feelings.

  • What a nice gentleman George was. He appreciated what life had given him, valued his one true love, took responsibility for his own actions, imparted his learnt wisdom onto others who needed to hear his advice, no matter who they were or what they looked like. His daughter was not proud of him nor did she understand why he made the financial choices he made regarding supporting his dying wife until his last penny and why those choices have now left him living in a box. Nicely done.

  • OMGOODNESS, am I supposed to have leaky eyes watching this masterpiece. Truer words have never been spoken, when George is talking with Jermaine, about how so many of us feel sorry for ourselves and have no appreciation for everything, yes everything, even pain. We learn something from that also. We can't expect things to change, if we keep doing the same thing. Take responsibility for our thoughts, reactions and actions. Let go of s..t. I am in my 73rd year, and am just coming out of the darkness. We are our own worst enemy. My wish for humanity is for us all to have a clear conscience and live and let live. It is a wonderful world, there are 2 kinds of people , them that do, and them that don't. We are supposed to help even them that don't, i am not so good at that, still trying to figure that one out. Everyone has a story. This is my ramblings. I felt it was the right place to express how I feel. Love and hugs to all.❤

All too often, especially these days, we see and hear people complaining about their lot in life and how it's always somebody else's fault. And we cater to these people, we coddle those who play the victim because we are told it is virtuous to do so, because we are told it is our responsibility somehow. There is no virtue in any of it.

  • The metaphor at the end (for me). Humans shield ourselves (box) whilst choosing to ignore the pain and suffering of others (dumpster) when there is clearly a way to climb out (stacked pallets) with the help of our patiently awaiting inner guide (girl) to a place of beauty and peace (blooming trees). Fantastic film.

    • I am inspired by your metaphor @sstafford2213 ~ thank you! Here is mine: I see the box as a symbol of impermanence - even though it is his home for now, it is temporary. Despite his circumstances (such that could bring others to check out) he has a deep abiding peace and acceptance and as such experiences heaven on earth ~ the beauty of the trees, wind and the innocence of the child. The Dumster made of steel ~ impenetrable unlike the box, represents the suffering of others when we believe we are seperate, alone and isolated. Even though the dumpster is in the same location, it is worlds away precisely because it is so closed up. The pallets are an interesting addition and I reckon too they represent possibility for change - a way out of suffering.

As a society we are moving and grooving so quickly we just don’t take the time to really: see, hear, and speak to our follower friends (frens) of society. George, George George,--took the time to really connect and to really communicate with people… We all have to thrive and to live the dash.

Because of the title- I recently watched “The last tourist” which I thought a just fun movie yet it turned out to be great meaningful movie- so I took a chance of “the last passport”. It was somewhat predictable yet character development was very interesting and dialogue was meaningful. All of them said what we all want to say yet do NOT say. Most films are too busy trying to squeeze a zillion bits of information into every second, this film was able to accomplish the same thing, without making the audience feel uncomfortable & restless. We, the audience, were given the time to process each precious bit of wisdom while simultaneously given the opportunity to truly 'Feel' what the characters felt. • Some very compelling stories in this film. I just don't see or experience how the main character benefits from talking to all these people. By the end he goes back to his home, and we the viewer don't experience how it benefited him or anyone he helped. I get that his wife died and he tried everything to help her but I don't see how doing this can help mend the loss he felt. It is missing some essential context about the main character, why is he doing this? what's at stake if he doesn't help these people? All these people are strangers to him. Why wouldn't he try to help the relatives to him that are still alive, they surely would mean more to him than complete strangers. He spends too much time trying to help too many people to go deep and escalate things and make his goal compelling and meaningful. It has potential, just needed stronger structure. The main actor and the actress at 31mins were great. Well done.

  • Excellent direction, cast selection & terrific acting - THAT's what this was all about, for me!! Script was interesting if people are fond of plays & the theater, but to be perfectly honest, it was a bit tooo long. I almost gave up half way, but the main actor & acting in general was so awe inspiring, that I decided to stick with it to find out what this was actually all about. Very nicely done & the intention with which this film was made speaks volumes for the kind of people you are!! Film makers have an obligation to contribute - Then they can take credit for what's good & right about their community, society, religion, culture, country & the world at large. There's much too much hate, bigotry & malice going around & if a film pollutes our world further with more garbage, then the producers can take the blame for all that's wrong & feel the guilt, when it comes around. The social message of humanity, kindness, compassion & love were what made this film stand out. You've got what it takes, so keep "contributing" & know that you have earned it, when it comes around. Karma (Universal Law) is stronger than ever since 2020. A Different Perspective & Point✍of View, to Consider - Namaste 🙏!!
