    • because in Americans schools(even now) it is RARELY if ever taught that America does as much wrong as it does. Especially in southern states where straight up censorship of books in schools is at an all time high. Currently reading Fahrenheit 451 in class, it’s on track to be removed from school libraries and banned in classrooms by next year, kind of absolutely insane the level of censorship and historical revisionism that goes on here in the states.

  • It's so nice to know I'm not the only one who's noticed the questionable stuff going on with our journalism. I live with family members who eat up their favorite news station whole heartedly every evening, and I was feeling like I was crazy for asking questions. Where did they get that statistic? Why are they reporting on this? Is there a bigger picture we're missing? Why do they keep platforming this problem/this person? I am convinced journalism is not about keeping people informed and hasn't been for a long time. It's about engagement. You don't have to do extensive primary-source research--it doesn't matter if your article is a game of telephone, so long as your article evokes enough interest and emotion. People get crappy news, and then feel crappy about it while their news companies make bank on the chaos. My government/current event high school classes could have never prepared me for the state of our journalism and government today.

With my eyes closed I crouch there for a minute, visualizing either Arnold or the guy from the second movie (not the chick in the third one because that one sucked) and I start to hum the terminator theme. Then I slowly rise to a standing position and open my eyes. It helps me to proceed through my day as an emotionless, cyborg badass. The only problem is if the shower curtain sticks to my terminator leg. It ruins the fantasy.

  • After doing some independent research of my own about school shootings in America, I found a similar problem where media inflates an issue as a scare tactic for various reasons, usually monetary. School shootings do happen, but the frequency and severity is almost always exaggerated. For instance the basic term "school shooting" can refer to a bunch of things, from an accidental shot fired in the vicinity of a school, all the way up to a massacre. Large publications conflate these occurrences into one singular stat to make the number of "school shootings" seem more common than it is. When you hear "school shooting" most people don't think of a gun going off nearby a school and nobody being hurt or injured, they think of kids getting shot and killed. It's definitely an issue and I feel it gives off a skewed vision of what school life in America is really like. I went to school for 13 years and there was never a school shooting or anything like it, I know that may not apply to everyone, but my point is that it gives off a very violent and dangerous view of American school that isn't usually the case, at least in the way it is portrayed.

    @ChiefBret@ChiefBret5 ай бұрын
    • You are 100% correct. Its just as irrational to be scared to go to church or school in fear of getting shot as it is to be scared of getting eaten by a shark every time you get in the ocean. You are by many orders of magnitude more likely to be killed in a car wreck than a mass shooting (or shark attack). And thats not even accounting for the fact that the vast majority of these shootings, or gun homicide in general, are highly concentrated in a small number of impoverished/ underserved communities. If you, like most, live outside of those that danger becomes nearly negligible as horrifying as those incidents are

  • I was active on TikTok when this was happening, there were a few videos w over 20k likes so I went and read the letter. From what I understood, people were reading it and realizing that many of us weren't taught his reasoning, only that he was bad. They were kinda draggin it (the letter also holds a lot of religious extremism, homophobia, and antisemitic rhetoric😅) but it was less "he was right/justified!" and more "what else aren't they teaching us?"

    @layabstar@layabstar6 ай бұрын
    • We are not taught why Hitler hated Jews or why he hated America( in his mind we were the bad guys as well). we are not taught why Stalin hated America( as well we were the bad guys). The reason we are not taught why Bin Laden's justification for his actions was because his actions were so terrible. It doesn’t matter what intentions you have, when you kill thousands of people, behead gays, and suppress the rights of women it doesn’t matter what your intentions are. The Unabomber for example did what he did because of a “good cause” but he still killed people. The reason why people aren’t taught this is because these reasons aren’t the actual reasons. These are people who used propaganda to take advantage of the people in their nation and convince them that it was okay to kill innocent people if they weren’t so innocent after all. Our education system is not great but Germany, Norway, and nations with great education systems don’t show these people justification as well because it’s terrible people who took advantage of their own people trying to take advantage of the people in other countries. And the fact that people believe this justification is reasonable, makes me understand how these people were able to take advantage of so many people.

That's maybe the first third of it, which is where he also devotes time to justify the murder of civilians and claim that "the Jews" control America (a major theme of the letter). In the second third, he requests that Americans do the following: convert to Islam; "reject the immoral acts of fornication, homosexuality, intoxicants, gambling's, and trading with interest;" stop supporting Israel; leave "our lands;" and stop supporting Middle Eastern governments (who he says prevent Islamists from instituting Sharia law). • These are things that most average people feel and think to themselves but don't feel a need to rant about on social media or what have you. These sentiments are the widely held beliefs of most Americans and we unfortunately allow the loud minorities of both sides to dictate the conversation. But when I see a video like this from someone like Ludwig, it gives me a semblance of hope. It signifies that these issues are penetrating into the everyday life of the average person, it shows that people acknowledge the current issues, and I hope that in the future it leads to people taking action. Props to Lud for the measured approach and the ability to apply nuance in a world that is so desperately lacking it.

Though in effect people and politics move either to dissuade future atrocities or to miss the point and see reactions multiple in terms of magnitude as the complexity of conflicts change. That’s the best way I can describe it. But it’s interesting to see things like that become prevalent and how others comprehend it

Americans were taught extremely racist ideas about the “Middle East”, they think the attack was because “they hate us for our freedom” and shit like that so when they see humanity in people they were taught to be monsters of course they are going to react like this. American imperialism and war crimes are not tied to Osma, that guy was evil but the US is worse.

  • I read the letter after hearing about this and it basically just says two things, 1.what Lud already pointed out, and 2.Sharia law needs implimented in their countries and other countries. Sharia law is pretty commonly known to be horrible, but for those of you who don’t know the specifics, a completely religious based court system, if a woman is a sexual victim she needs 4 adult male whitnesses, public displays of homosexuality can result in the death penalty, a strict dress code among all civilians (even more so for women to the point of dehumanizing), a belief within Sharia Law is that it must be spread to any nation which Muslims occupy (which we have seen pushes for it in European countries), and much worse. So while it is true the US and other western nations has done horrible things to the middle east, the solution is never Sharia Law and it is dangerous to support anyone who proposes it in its’ purest form like Osama did.
