I'm pretty shocked that there's no mention of the cooling system. Make sure to replace the entire cooling system!
Very good point. I should have mentioned it!!!
I had to replace the expansion tank and several coolant lines on mine after the old drive belts and tensioner pulleys went bad and my car overheated.
Yeop definitely need it replaced. My car had low miles, was regularly serviced and had an elderly owner so it was in really great condition. Read about it everywhere from owners that the plastic in the expansion tank goes bad. I ignored it, and yeop had a crack in coolant the system... GET IT REPLACED. I had a car with literally no coolant. No matter what the condition of the E46, plastic at that age will eventually go bad.
No need to replace the entire cooling system dumbass, if its not broken then its not needed.

• Oil change • Oil filter • Air filter • Cabin filter • Fuel filter • Water pump • Coolant • Brake fluid •Transition oil Check the belts, suspension and any oil leaks. UK about £400 service but then you should be ok for some time. Good luck
Oil filter gasket too
About to get my second E46 soon, upgrading from a 318 to 330 swapping some bits around. Actually topaz blue pre face lift like yours
#1 is the oil and cooling system.
Lets all do are best to keep the e46s on the road. Not turn them into a bunch of shit piles!
Ur videos are best. Im considering buying my own e46
I highly recommend it
Hey Evan, love the videos! 👊🏾
Thank you!!!
Hey mr roboto lol 😂 follow my channel
I highly recommend checking key suspension/drivetrain bushings for cracks; these are the front A-arms, back toe bushings and the main bushing holding the differential. Another easy mod is the "O2pilot" mod which increases vacuum to the bottom of the engine and greatly decreases oil consumption on M54 engine. Cheers!
what does this O2pilot do ?
@@aleckvillalobos The M54 engine uses a single piece design piston oil ring compared to the 3piece design on the M52 engine. Increasing vacuum seems to help these perform their intended duty. At least it greatly reduced oil consumption on my car short of changing piston rings...
Also check the DISA flap on the intake, if that flap fails, there's a metal pin that falls into the engine. The results of that is not a good one.
Yes I have an upgraded disa valve from German auto solutions
just put another engine in job done
wow have i bought a freak of bmw nature just had a e46 52 plate cabriolet with 125thou on it and guess what no oil leaks no oil burn pulls like a train roof works interior excellent amazing aint it
What do you think about the rear subframe issues in the estate version of 1999
Bought mine with a bad front hub bearing, I say that because it pulls violently left, got an alignment done, didn’t fix. It hums louder at lower speeds but the steering wheel starts doing its happy dance around 40-45 mph sooo I might see if new front hub assemblies will fix.
Just. Evan 💪💪💪💪
My 325 doesn’t have the flap in the exhaust 🤷♂️ so I guess get rid of the whole muffler
I just bought a 04 330i 2 days ago lol thanks for the tips
u should check your front controls arms, those go first usually on sedans. but urs is an 04 so i think you have the upgraded ones from the factory so u should be good, check your MAF sensor and plugs and coils. other than that just common oil changes and top off fluids i.e radiator, engine oil, steering reservoir. Have fun wtih it bro congrats! XD
Congrats!!!
How is she treating you?
@@powersdmc awesome! I replaced some old parts and got a stage 1 tune. I love this car
@@ogpimpin5059 how much have you spent on it? And what parts did you replace?
Hey I hope you can see this but I just Did just buy a E46 330ci and I'm kinda new to this
Just got my e36 today I’m so happy bro it’s my first car
I might get one as my first too
I have a 2003 325ci,210,000 miles ot any major oil leaks but have a anti- freeze leak and overheating dealership checked it says has broken cooling line under manifold right behind oil filter. Cost 2,900 used. Is there a cheaper fix? If Barrs leak additive also need to get item to check engine faults
Link to the steering wheel?
most people say they leak oil... i have had som old bmws. non of them had leaked oil. guess i had some luck. e36 318is, e34 530, e39 523, e46 320. never had engine problems with non off them either. but rust tho. rust and rust and loots of rust.. so fun to drive tho, i cant stop buy them 😁
me neither how strange is that
3:40 The what sorry? Vanos liner? What is that?
The less gizmos, the less headaches down the road. Nothing you can do about plastic parts other than replacing it with another really plastic part unless there's a aftermarket metal replacement
Oh....those pans under the valve cover are supposed to be silver?. . . .
Do you know if I’d be able to do it all at once when getting it serviced, just bought a 2003 325i with 136,000 miles. Just wondering how much you think all of it would be together
you should do pretty much all of it yourself bro these are some of the easiest cars in existence to work on and there is countless videos on how to DIY everything. it will save you thousands in labor and you will get to know your car also i have had mechanics mess up my e46 they put tons of white silicone on the valve cover gasket which is a big no no. also many mechanics dont want to take the time to diagnose problems so they will throw parts at the car and cross their fingers and who cares because its not coming out of their pocket. i had a power steering leak last week and i was able to diagnose it myself as a complete beginner it was a single $50 hose that was dried and cracked a mechanic would have probably told me i need new pump, reservoir, hoses plus labor
@@46god you've given me confidence I needed
Great video! What’s your exhaust set up?
Factory!
@@EvanGoyuk Sounds great!
Change the coolant with REAL fluid. Flush the brake system and refill with DOT 4.
what do i use for power steering fluid? DOT 4 transmission fluid right?
@@vjeff777 Good question. I forgot about that one! Double check your owner's manual or go online. I've "gone there" and also now recall DEXIII ATF. I wouldn't go cheap oon this. Use a turkey baster to suck out the old fluid.
@@buster349100 turkey baster? please elaborate? What do you mean exactly? never heard of that but it sounds like it can be a practical concept.

More ecu programing for stock e46 maybe? Because there are no videos that show you how to do in the correct way.
What type of programming? Like adding features?
Evan Goyuk yup, and high rpm , maybe backfire and more
Are you from Mass, I swear I seen you today at the junkyard
Yes lol I was at the junkyard
Evan Goyuk first time running into a KZheadr lol I wasn’t sure but I was like damn he look just like someone I watch on KZhead. Sadly the didn’t have any e46 there seems like there getting newer models in. I was also looking for a couple parts myself for my 2001 325ci
Should have said hi, they rarely have coupes there unfortunately. There is a coupe at the junkyard next to it stack up high. Email me egoy936@aol.com. I will tell you at what yard.
Yo how u doing im from england uk Ive just got a 330ci i think its a zhp but im not sure do you know how i can tell?
They don’t have the ZHP in Europe just the m-sport 330ci or clubsport which is super rare. So you probably have a 330ci m-sport. Congrats on I love the m sport bumpers!
Oh right it has m sport badges and ali trim inside the doors and it has rear parking camras dvd player sat nav ect. Heated seats all electric. I can also have it in auto or manual. Ill post a pic soon
I cant figure out how to send photos arrgghhh
Hi! Does the radio turn on orange at night? Thanks a lot
Yes
🤦🏻🤦🏻
Just take it to a German car mechanic that knows their shit and invest in everything that needs replacing and maintain it well
How about no
That's a bad idea. Don't buy an E46 if you aren't going to learn on it. It can become a money pit fast.
First thing: put down oil resistant flooring in the garage
is the steering wheel much nicer ?
Yes it is
No need to replace cooling system parts beore they fail, just be aware they will probably fail and do weekly due dillogent checks. I have had cooling bits last anywhere between 3 and 10 years. E21, e34, e36 series, there's no guarantee, just luck, good and bad.🤔
Where I can buy the steering wheel?
eBay or if you want a custom one check out AZA Auto Wheel on Instagram!!
first thing : wield the diff, second : coil overs. done.
Sounds like a plan lol

Would you recommend e46 as a first car? i really want a bmw
Depends on the previous maintenance done to the car and if your mechanically inclined
Well I'm passionate and I research a lot, but I don't know how theory and reality work together I'll see when I got mine, because I will soon, very stubborn
Just to mention I'm 24-25, because "first car" may come from like a very young driver Found an 2.0ci m52 6 cilinders in line coupe I m really interested in, would love an 2.3 or 2.5 but here the taxes are huge
yes defo ive had 3 and never had all these scary probs that keep popping up here ive just bought my 4th a 318 cab ci its the dogs nuts
No. As an owner no. If you live with mommy and daddy. You have a honda or something already and this is a second vehicle? Yes. I speak highly of these cars. They are reliable but the longer i have mine as MY first car and daily im watching these vids about to sell. The yearly maintenance is so high. I have a clean 2 owner. High miles but upkept. In 10k mile ive put shit probably 1200$ in the car. Still more. Great project. Great as a second car. As a primary? As a new driver? No. That’s alot of go starting off and it’s fun until you drive it everyday.
First thing to do, go to parking lot and get rpm high.
How much the radio
around 300 usd
6:56 the WHAT mod
Butterfly mod, keeping the exhaust valve open.
I have a video on it
I buy one and now i have a code p1093 wtf
#1 in Europe check for Rust !!
Things you have to replace right away when buying an E46: Motor oil Valve cover gasket Oil filter housing gasket Oil pan gasket Rear main seal Water pump expansion tank Cooling hoses Thermostat sensor Thermostat Radiator Air mass flow sensor Air filter Air intake boot kit Both 02 sensor throttle body Pulleys kit Disa valve pcv breather system kit rear suspension Fuel filters Windows regulators A/C compresor Coils Convertible will fail Sunroof will fail Crankshaft sensor position Ballast Cluster Lowers control arm bushings Subframe bushings So be ready to put around 3 to 4k when you buy an E46 to keep it running like new 🙂 I know because I had to replace all that $#!+ to my E46 then when the moon roof and windshield wiper linkage motor and one of my ballast failed I said f this $#!+ and I sold it , I lost a lot of money I will never look back again to buy another bmw ...
wtf, that shit's not worth it
Why would you buy a bmw with so much problems
‘Front and rear suspension’? You buy a car that’s 20 years old, that’s just something you know when you buy a bit of an older car. It’s not something you HAVE to replace!
LMAO i just bought one for 2k without knowing all this shit. rippppp
@@squidgunn let's not forget about the major issue , the rear subframe needs to be reinforced,
Everyone pretend BMWs don’t have a cooling system
DO NOT USE CARLY ⛑🚨
It’s good to start out with definitely not the best
Yeah is been know to ruin modules on BMWs
