6 years later and I still occasionally think about brouwer’s fixed point when making my morning coffee, idk how this helps me in life but thanks anyway Michael.👍
I've watched this video several times since it came out, and I have yet to understand the coffee thing at around 4:25. I don't see how it's not possible to have every molecule in a different spot after mixing.
Technically you could, like if you had only 2 coffee molecules you could just spin them 180 degrees. But he mentions to a certain "error", so in theory there has to be an infinite number of points (so not discrete molecules)
@@jakebrowning2373 His example is wrong. It only really applies to stirring that never changes the central point.
@@skittybug6937 no, stirring the coffee (assuming the coffee is continuous instead of molecules) leaves at least 1 point in the same spot, doesnt have to only be the center axis
@@jakebrowning2373 If you change the axis, every point moves. This can be done by changing the axis of flow. Although this can be resolved by realizing that stirring something in two different axes where the axis of rotation changes only meets the definition of "continuous" in the colloquial sense, not in the mathematic sense as described in the video.
All you gotta do is instead of moving your mixer in a circle go the straight across the cup a few times as well and move the spoon up and down while also doing the other mixing movements. I didn't look at it with a microscope but I'm pretty sure no molecule could be untouched
Michael's scooter: crashes spectacularly in front of him Michael (casually, as if nothing happened): Thats pretty cool.

3:35 Shrink the block to 1/5 original size. Rotate it 180 degrees. Move it so the original 'top' two lines are inside the centre square, and the 'bottom' three lines are in the pink square above the centre. SOLVED!
The problem is that the line where the two identical colors intersect still counts as points.
The 9 works for single digits if you include them as a decimal like 1.0 and move decimal when you add. So 1.0 would minus .1 to create .9. Which I find interesting when thinking about the E8 lattice and how its a fractal of triangles. The square root of 9 is 3, a triangle. Quarks breaks down in 3's, add up in 3s to make protons and neutrons. The Electron creates a fixed point forming a triangle from nucleus, etc. At the center of the E8 lattice is a hexagon (Most energy conserving shape) made up of 6 even triangles.

Michael, we very much cut and glue when we stir, additionally, we have a third dimension, and liquids are compressible and ununiform.

The crossing of the temperature reminds me of the fly hitting the windshield concept. If you map a fly’s speed on a graph with forward motion represented by a positive number and the speed in the opposite direction as a negative number, the line crosses 0 at some point. Meaning at some point the fly came to a complete stop when it hit the windshield before moving in the opposite direction. But for the fly to be able to come to a complete stop, that would suggest the windshield was at a complete stop at the same time.
I'm missing it. I don't know what the hell he was talking about. I know what you're saying, but I don't know what he's saying.
@sladewilson9741 the key is that if one place is 20° and another place is 30°, there must be an unbroken gradient in between that goes from 20-21-23-24-all the way to 30, and including every number in between those ofc. And that would still be true if the 20° place and the 30° place are right next to each other, it would just be more compressed. So, if you picked a point on earth's surface that was 20° and another on the exact opposite that was 30°, and you swapped those two points by sliding them at the same rate along an unbroken path so that they're always exactly opposite each other, then at some point the temperatures would intersect (one is going down and the other is going up) and be the exact same temperature. It doesn't matter what that in-between temperature is, the idea is just that we know it exists.

This video has everything! Purple donuts, art on the moon, neat number tricks, and infinity. Reminded me to DRS my #GME with Computershare.
5:16 my mother taught me a neat trick when I was young. If you want to know if a number is divisible by 9 just add the numbers and it will always give you a total number added up that's divisible by 9 or adds up to a multiple of 9 that is of course, well, divisible by 9. Its a neat trick especially for quick math like what can divide the number 243. 2 + 4 + 3 = 9.
Hm.. i mean.. this is primary school curriculum.. at least where i am from this is not a trick but basic educational
@@DerTolleIgel Yeah, same here, and I think Genesis Osuna's mind will be blown when they learn that the same trick applies to 3 as well :)
@@tgr4692 Actually, even more generally, in base b, this trick will always work for any divisor that is a factor of b-1. For base 10, that's 10-1=9, factors of 9 are 3 and 9 (1 is trivial). So in hexadecimal, this trick works for numbers divisible by 3, 5, and 15 (I encourage you to try it, it's pretty neat, assuming you know how to convert bases ofc).

Thinking about that "four" thing, but in Spanish, there are two possible outcomes. Depending on the number you start with, you'll either be stuck at 5 (cinco), or you'll eternally alternate between 4 (cuatro) and 6 (seis). You'll have to ask someone else about other languages :P
(13:30) In Hungarian, kettő (2) is 5 letters long, and öt (5) is 2 letters long, making it a loop. All numbers will trickle down towards három (3) due to so many numbers having 3 letters: négy (4), hat (6), hét (7), tíz (10) ('gy' is one letter). Egy (1) is the only other number with 2 letters, which also joins the 2-5 loop. Hungarian does not have any end point.

@12:53 In Finnish, such a ”cosmic number” would be 5, since the Finnish word for five (”viisi”) is spelled with five letters. But there is another way to get stuck in an endless loop (a 2-loop, in this case), in Finnish, and that is between the numbers 8 and 9, since the Finnish word for eight (”kahdeksan”) is spelled with nine letters, and the Finnish word for nine (”yhdeksän”) is spelled with eight letters. 😄
in russian it’s three (три) and eleven (одиннадцать). in ukrainian it’s just three, but you can also get into a 3-part loop between six (шість), five (п’ять), and four (чотири)

7:32 Michael's reaction to the noises were so incredibly genuine that it makes me believe that the scooter doing anything other than just toppling onto its side a few meters away was totally unplanned
The KZhead loading animation goes exactly over the line of the thumbnail. *So satisfying*
Watching a Vsauce video leaves me with more questions than answers
Thanks for uploading Michael! See you in 3 months!
David Christmas lol
David Christmas hopefully not, but ya for real.
its funny cuz your name is Christmas and in 3 months it is christmas

David Christmas that's not funny, my future self approves. It's been 1000 years

Great job, Andy. Now there will always be a PP on the moon for the foreseeable future.

Someone probably the dick IS the forst art on the moon. And for one i am proud of humanity
3:42 - resize it to the size of one of the original pixels, rotate it 180 degrees, align it with the pixel in the top left and move it down exactly one pixel (of the smaller one). The top row is now in the second row of the initial array, while all other rows are in the first row. No pixel is still in the place it used to be, without it ever leaving it's bounds. What am I missing?
You are missing that there's no pixel grid. Fixed points only exist in continuous space, that is, it does not matter how small you make something, you can always find a new point "in-between". So there is no "pixel" you could shrink it to. The fields have sharp borders, but no matter how close you zoom in, it's always an infinte amount of points in-between. And since you can only transform the plane in a way that the distance between two points is an unbroken line of points that move closer together both before and after the transformation (i.e. no holes, no cuts) and you are not allowed to swap two points, you get at least one fixed point. Imagine shrinking the grid entirely into one colored field. Now you wish to move ALL points of the same colour out of that field without moving ANYother point outside of that field. Since there is a continuous line between the colored grids, no matter how you twist or bend it, you MUST find a point of another color that either touches a differently colored field, or touches the border. Since the border is infinitely sharp, touching the border means sharing points in common. Either way, you lose. You either can't move ALL the same-colored pixels out, or you MUST "bleed" other colored pixels into a differently colored field.
3:57 This property actually comes from the only rule of the thought excitement, that is that one of the squares in this case has to completely contain the other(s) and if there would be multiple then the “glow” couldn’t add up in any way. This makes it so that no matter how big or small the square will either become the containing square or if it’s small it will just at least always be in only 1 colour, so that means at least 1 of the square inner colours is glowing..
12:14 Vsauce has spent too much time on the dark side of KZhead.
I went to the comment section just to find this.. He was in one of FilthyFranks vids tho so it makes sense
Yeah thats why I said he was spending too much time there lol
I was gonna like it but it has 69 likes
surrealducks Good choice.
Heeyyyyyyyy that's pretty gooooooooooood
7:25 funniest Vsauce moment in history. I'm glad it was not edited out.
Kauan Raphael Mayworm Klein he must not be very funny
ExplodedDrip He doesn't need to be, does he?
He was like: "I'm not doing this again, I've been trying all afternoon to land on the sofa perfectly!"
Kauan Raphael Mayworm Klein hey that's pretty good
The end of his monologue right after he blinks four times was immediately followed by an ad for Noom where the first guy said he was on the program for four months and I swear it felt like a glitch in the matrix lol
1:49 watch it through
