This is a short story of how my journey suddenly switched from being a recovering addict from Destiny 2 to breaking out of it, trying out other games and finding another hidden (not really) gem.

  • I started with the first destiny almost a decade ago, and I loved it for it's entire lifecycle, after moving on to Destiny 2, I stopped playing when Red War ended. I tried to get back into it in 2022, and it threw me into the deep end of a story I simply was not there for. It completely overwhelmed me and I left again. I started trying to get back into it a few months ago and after spending some time assessing where the game and the community is, I just don't think I want to devote so much time to a company that so clearly has lost respect for the core of their playerbase, a core I was once a part of. Games like Helldivers 2 make me feel respected as a player, I don't feel like I only exist for the developers to squeeze another penny out of me, and I feel like I'm just having fun.

    • Why did you stop playing during Red War ? I heard it was one of the best eras of Destiny. And yeah, sadly that's how most people react too, for me personally everything is fine, because I know the whole story, but new players get so exhausted by trying to understand bits and pieces that usually don't make sense and quit. Imagine if they put more effort into the game though... Bungie really fell in front of everyone's eyes. The last point, you are SO CORRECT, that is a perfect way to say it. Helldivers 2 makes you feel respected because the company does not want to waste your time, did you see the prices of armors ? It's literally 2 bucks, even then, you don't really need them, and if you do, you can grind the currency to get them.

    • Short answer? Life Long answer? Destiny was always designed to be as addictive as possible, but that never stopped me from at least spending some of my time in other games like For Honor, Elite Dangerous, and a ton of strategy games (I personally recommend Battle Brothers if you're into strategy.) . Over time I played these games more and more and Destiny 2 less and less and eventually I stopped altogether. I did not first leave Destiny 2 out of anger or confusion, I just got caught up with other stuff. I will be honest with you, I did not tell the full truth about when I tried to get back into it in 2022, I only said it overwhelmed me with a story that I was not there for, what I did not say is that I went into it completely unaware that Bungie shelved Red War (I stopped keeping up with the community in like 2019 (?) or so, at least until now), and because it had been so long, I had decided to make a new guardian before beginning play (sort of a "what did I miss, and lets see if I can relearn things", you know?) and instead of being greeted with Red War like I expected I found myself in the same place I recognized from Destiny one. I kid you not I thought I was dreaming for a little while because how in the world could this be Destiny 2? I already woke up in front of the cosmodrome wall in D1 and waking up there again felt surreal, and after summarily executing all the fallen inside (still got it :D) I moved on to the cosmodrome proper and kinda half heartedly continued with the main quest line. I want to say I kept with it for as long as I could, but by that point I was literally doubting what was real about the first Destiny and my first experience with D2 and trying to reconcile that with what I was seeing. It was around this point when I realized I could never play Red War again and that Bungie shelved it (You remember? The Destiny I paid for all those years ago? Because I remember.), because of this, my entire basis for what the campaign was and where I was in the story was shattered, and when I was shunted off to Mars to see the first mission in some DLC or other I had had enough. I'm sorry for rambling for a bit, but in effect, I first left because of distraction and circumstance, then in 2022 left because of sheer unbridled confusion, and I explained my reasons for leaving once more in the original reply.

    • Dang, thanks for sharing! My reasons are a little bit different, but I see similarities, I didn't stop playing though. But I can definitely see your point, thanks for taking the time to write this! ❤️

  • Idk about helldivers. I have the biggest buyer regret getting, in comparison to destiny where i always come back to. Guess its cause i play solo, but i always get crushed in helldivers and lose every mission cause the enemies are just way too much and the support system is too complex.

    • That makes sense, Destiny can be played solo more, but before Bungie started caring not too long ago, Helldivers was my escape from greedy companies like Bungie, I'm glad everything turned around. But coming back to the topic, I believe if you spend at least 10-20 hours in the game it covers the cost of purchasing the game, what I mean is for example a movie ticket costs anywhere from 6 to 16 bucks (at least in my country), movie goes for 2, maybe sometimes 3 hours, so if you spend 30-40 bucks and play for 30-40 hours, it really covers it and you shouldn't feel that bad about it. Unless you hated everh hour of it, then it's different lol
