I like to scrap metal and make videos. Scrapper at heart but is it still worth it for small amounts?

Thanks so much for watching!
Had a friend who used to scrap ... If you saw him out and about and asked him what he was up to, he say, "I'm Scrappity scap scrap scrappin!" I 'll never get that outta my head lol
I did a project last summer dismantling a bottling plant for my brother, who managed the plant and didn't want the liability of his employees scrapping the equipment. It was mostly stainless, and I was able to yield about $12k for the metal and close to $15k for the electronics (on Ebay). Needless to say, it was worth the effort, even if it took me every weekend for 3 months. Hard work is good for the soul, and the wallet.
You got paid for saving the environment: nice! And thanks!
Nice clean scrap yard, every time I go to ours I worry about getting something in my tires. Two nails on the last trip.
I always worry about that too, but I've never gotten a flat (knock on wood).
Gus is so awesome. Thanks for sharing him with us.
It's amazing how quickly the scrap pile at our shop builds up, when it starts getting in the way we load the truck...we don't bother separating it and just take the mixed metal price, the scrap yard is close to us so it's basically free money... It's always enough to have a pizza & beer night at the shop!
Try separating it once and see how much more you make. Would be a cool experiment
I love doing scrap. I have a plumber friend that lets me take all his old well tanks, hot water heaters, etc. I use my dump trailer, and normally it’s $2-$400 a trip.
When your self-employed any kind of hustle to bring in some cash is always a good thing. Gus, hahahaha....well done! Thanks for sharing Chris
Gus is self-employed? All this time I thought he was just one of the crew working hourly.
you're*
That junk was better than half of the stuff my boss keeps and I can't believe they were tossing that oil drain
Yeah. The oil drain was like new. It was one that they mistakenly ordered and was smaller than needed so instead of returning it they just held on to it for a while and then decided to get rid of it.
Hey Chris. Could you do a video on different types of scraps and how to sort it to get the most out of a trip to the scrap yard? Love everyone of your videos, great work!
I'm in HVAC contractor and I always break down the ACRs From installing central air on residential , I'll wait until I have a dump trailer full sometimes and I've gotten like $2,700 for a load Not to mention all the furnaces and hot water tanks I take in. The scrap is a byproduct of my business but it does pay ! Thanks for the video Chris
What do rusted out hot water tanks go for these days? Or is the value in taking them to get cleaned and rebuilt?
Come on brother, you should have made the video much longer. I really enjoyed it. Please do more. Thanks, Chris!
Cool short vid Chris. One person's junk is another one's bucks! And Gus finishes for the win! 😉
Hello Chris and Jen from Sydney Australia. Once you've collected the motor oil in the tank, what are the options; * shop oil burner heater * coat "in ground" fencing posts * pay to dispose * centrifuge rotation recycling Electric stick welding I wouldn't mind your workshop episodes, tutorials; power selection and welding rod sizes for various thinness of steel? O'yes would you like a coffee and donut? 🍩☕
I believe AutoZone gives $0.10 a quart for used oil.
Gus man is natural scraper cheers guys 😊
Always fun. Thanks!
A couple of weeks ago, I took 135Kg of scrap iron & aluminium, the iron was priced at £100.00 GBP Sterling/metric tonne and aluminium at £800.00 GBP Sterling/metric tonne, that load netted me just over £27.00 GBP Sterling - your scrap metal prices are far better than here in UK at the moment! My transaction (as I was only dealing in two categories) took about 15 minutes - they don't pay cash, they pay direct to your bank account, so that the entire transaction is traceable - too much stealing! Thanks for sharing, greetings from the UK!
Awesome episode. More!!!
I am subscribed to all you and Jens channels, I will turn 70 yrs old next March, i have been scrapping junk since i was 12 yrs old, collecting everything from cars, trucks, tractors, you name it, ive drug it home and junked it. My wifes family owns a salvage yard so growing up around a junk yard since i was 10 yrs old, i gets in your bones. KEEP ON SCRAPPIN< ALRIGHTY NOW!, luv u two.
Your video quality seems so much better? Love your show!
I have a small trailer I use mainly for storing scrap metal. Once it's full, I haul it a mile and a half down the road and usually get about $200 or more. So, it's definitely worth it for me.
Good morning Chris and Jen. Happy Friday !
Honestly, I am surprised by the amount of money they pay you just for scrap , in my country (🇦🇷) they wouldn't even give me 10 dollars for all that
How much can you buy with 10$ in Argentina compared to 111$ in the USA? I'm curious if we acount for the buying power is the value you get for scrap similar?
I love that you scrap. I recycle as much as I can and in our state we pay a deposit on cans and bottles i started my boys on taking cans back for the deposit and they’re doing it on their own. We only got one might as well, save as much as we can.
seems kinda fun to do although probably not worth it unless you have regular access to large amounts of scrap
Even if you're only making a few bucks, you have to compare it to the alternative. My local landfill has a recycling program, and they take metal, but they charge a per ton rate just like they charge for trash. If I only make $30 or $40 to take my metal to the scrap yard, but I compare that to $30 or $40 I would have had to pay the county to dump it in their recycling bin, I'm essentially $60-80 ahead.
That's exactly the way I look at it. I'd rather get a few bucks than have to give a few bucks for essentially the same trash run.
Hey man love the content. I actually ran across Jen first. Question - is there a video when you first got Gus and is he a mini? Thanks and I will be watching
Hey, thanks so much for tuning in. We didn't do a video about getting him but I think the first video we ever appeared in was the cat 977 will it run video.
Great Video !
Thay really cleaned up the old Trenton iron and metal alpha did a great job
Chaching! Well done Sir! You are a Jedi.
Just realized this channel exists after watching your other two channels for several months. Just a suggestion: make one for cars, one for working around the garage, one for boats, bikes scooters…. It would be less confusing for your viewers, but maybe that’s how you get more views…. Otherwise, I like your car vids the best.
Gus was scraping in the leaves. Thanks for the upload
Scrappy lil guy
Ahh that scrapping of metal and Gus steals the show my finding something in the leaves 😂😂😂😂
That nice piece you scrapped you will need next moth and will spend an age looking for it 😁
Looks like Gusman found a dead bird. Lol he likes that more that the ball lolol
NnkH I have a 1987 Corvette people keep scratching it or breaking things out of it what should I do with the Corvette
Since I only do DIY auto at home, I usually don't have enough to make it worthwhile so I just give my scrap to my church's youth group. They have a scrap drive every year or two.
Gus man is good at sniffing out the deals.
It seems like Everytime I go to the scrap yard I leave there with a bunch of nails in my tires and spend way more money fixing tires lol
Get it gus good dog 😂 I scrap everything it keeps it out of the landfill thanks for sharing this six stars
“I hate to throw this out, this is a nice piece” chunks it 😂
I love to see the recycling. The more we re-use material, the longer we make our resources last. Thanks.
As an aussie in sudney its always funny seeing people playing in leaf litter. We are always warned about funel web spiders red belly black snakes or even a brown hiding amongst the leaves.
what state did you do this in? This yard looks much nicer than the one I go to and the prices seem better, I’m in PA
Was that a towbar and a car jack - just fit a new ram surely, the wheels work well
Jeez. I remember doing this about 15 or so years ago. Haul around 5000 LBS. To the yard and leave with around 60 dollars. I always felt like they robbed me. But I had to haul it off sooner or later.
👍👏👌 Nice finds, especially the professional oil change helper device. 2) I just "found" this third NNKH channel and subscribed instantly (of course). Don't know why I didn't heard of its existence before. Luckily it was recommended to me. 3) I absolutely love cute little Gus! 💚 Even if he finds stinky stuff. 😁 ;-) Best regards, luck and especially health to all 4 of you.
The pickup is the key: if you can just throw stuff on and kick it off at the scrapyard, then yes. I’d do it. I just scrapped some very small bits today, but this is Germany: as a private shmoe, you can scrap stuff at certain collection points “for free”, meaning you don’t have to pay to throw it away. Old school scrap yards still exist, but I don’t know if you can show up with just a pickup or a small trailer.
Yeah we just cleaned the scrap out of our barn. Made 3 trips to the scrap yard. 1500 LB of general scrap got me like $110. Its was really more about getting that crap off my property then it was about the money. I did however decide to stop saving aluminum cans/ radiators, just not much value there.
7:54 the reason why I dont like my kids jumping in leaves!
When did the 3rd channel come out??? Never saw that mentioned in any other video...??
The scrap yards near you pay far more than they do around here. I just took a truck load of rotors and iron heads to the local yard and didn't make what you made in that little haul. They consider most rotors 'composite' and they pay only a bit over 'light iron'. Aluminum cans were only $.17/100, and a 22 home ac condensers only brought $36. All that and you risk cutting a tire in the minefield of a disaster area they call their yard. They also watch closely to make sure you don't pick anything up. Once its on the ground, its theirs. Batteries however do better here, with some yards paying a flat fee per battery. at one point they were up to $11/per battery but are now somewhere around $3 or $4. I generally cut and melt them down myself for the lead. I do the same with most of my aluminum, especially beer and soda cans.
Mike the scavenger is the King of scrapping.
Watch yo head...owww!
its only worth it if you have it in bulk or can find it in bulk. If you are driving around multiple towns slowly filling your truck bed, you are losing money. Cost you more to fill up your truck with fuel than what scrap you can stuff it with.
save my scrap all year and take to scrap just before xmas and also check when the scrap boats are in, as the price for scrap goes up
Love a man that says I have enough crapp
Gus is always good for a laugh.😂
Gus needs his own go pro and channel!
How much$/ton for regular steel?
Nothing wrong with scrapping. 👍 ...and Gus in the leaves... where'd he go?... lol..
Chris really admire your thrifty, use everything attitude... I wonder what our landfills would look like if everyone did the same.. Im the same way. Great job... Trash into money!
Autozones in Houston you're only allowed to bring 3 batteries at a time plus 1 for core. Still better than nothing
Nnkh always finding treasures 💰
Don’t leave us hanging!!! What did Gus find? 😂
Not bad chris
oops mist a channel hitting the buttons now then doing a catch up
Nice oil caddy!
chris brother , what was wrong with that floor jack ?
I tried pumping it up and it didn't go up so probably just needs new seals. But I already have four floor jacks
One time I topped off the fluid in my floor Jack with some break fluid and the mixture of the two fluids turned into a paste
How did you train the dog to find dinner ?
Was that a catalitic converter you scrapped with regular metal?😮
No. It was a resonator
I found a good size roll of copper wire looks like it fell off a work truck, i gwbe it to a gut that scraps, idk what it was worth.
What gear box do you have on that 2nd gen
Nv4500
Hey Man, I didn't you have a third channel! More surprises up the pipe?
There's a shawtys channel too for quick mobile form snatchat "story" type blips
Good boy Gus! ;-)
not to bad for 2 hours of work. do scrap yards take ac and fridge?
Yes most do
Never done this. Usually call a scrap guy and he comes and gets if for free. But I'm confused because I see you throw things in different piles but on the pay out receipt how did they know how much the different categories weighed? Did you scale between each drop off location? I get the weigh in and weigh out part.
He was getting weighed between the first two drop offs and the last one they weigh the different categories individually off the cart. The place I have been to gives you a pallet to put all of your items on then they take it into a sorting area and weigh by type of material and pay you. It wasn’t as big and fancy as this one.
@@montestu5502 thanks
It isnt worth it for me at my shop. At least for steel and iron anyways. Closest scrapyards are about 30min away. I create so little scrap (i keep most drop cuts and whatnot) I have an elderly neighbor that scraps for fun. I just call him and he picks up whatever I have left on the side of the garage. He has a big dump trailer that he fills up and takes it down to the yards i nentioned. Its a win win for all of us.
I appreciate that you keep used sh!t and actually use it in other projects.
Scrapping is seldom worth it, but scrapping is fun. I scrap as often as I can but if you count the hours and the mess and wear, we are all better off doing other easier work. Love the tires....I catch as many as I can.
Fr its fun
At one time the scrapyards charged to take old cars so they just got dumped on the side of the road.
It’s a quick way to score some extra bones.
What the hell is this? Where did this channel come from? I didn’t know it existed! It’s going to take me a long time to get caught up! What is the difference between NNKH2 and miscellaneous?
It's a long story, but this channel is just for anything and everything
@@nnkhmisc well, I am not complaining. I love your content. I watch everything you post right to the end. I don’t know where you get the time to first of all, live the life, you and Jen live, and then record and edit and upload all of it… Keep it coming!
Jen upload a new video
scrapping is def not worth as a main job unlike people think it gets. Its great as a side hobby or if you know where to get it all the time but with gas prices going up and scrap going down, its not worth it anymore. Smart thing to do is find things that you can sell that people or company throws out.
4:28 жаль мне нужно домкрат
I have a scrap guy who pulls the old boilers out of the basement for me. He charges $350 to take it out of a basement, then scraps it for himself. That guy is rolling in money because almost all the plumbers in my area use him. If I could find a couple young guys that can do that kind of work, I would be making a fortune myself.
I always save my scrap metal. That's play money. 😂 And the scrap yard is only about 3 miles up the road.
i'm still surprised that they still pay you in cash when selling scrap. In most European Union countries, the scrap money is deposit in your bank account the next business day. This is so the government is knowing if your stealing large amounts of copper or catalytic converters. In other words, your leaving a digital trail after yourself.
Scrap yards usually give you a number for your own little account there, when you pull up to weigh the second visit you shout out your number and that follows you on your receipt at payout. Scrappers in my town drive old pickups with broken frames all V shaped full to the brim in the back with whatever they can find. A lot of people in my town also don't even register their car or don't renew it or the insurance so these are the kinds of people who take cash or don't bother at all.
US states usually require showing an ID at the salvage yard to track selling scrap.
If only they would buy worn out tires
I put my blinders on,hahaha.
Gus scrappin.
You'd get $20 in dekalb Illinois for that 😢
the lead is worth more in the batterys
Our dog ate, or tried to eat the grossest rotting dead bunny once. It had white eyes and not any skin much. Ugh...
I cleaned 400lbs s crap out of my garage and was payed money to get rid of it so I picked up $40 and declutterd win win
Scrappin' is worth it for guys who can't do what you know how to do-- which is to buy old cars and boats, get em running, and resell them. The only thing you are lacking in the process is a cheap car paint place that will work you out a deal. You could be racking up the profits by simply buying old C-4 vettes, gettin' em running and repainting them. You could take a 3 thousand dollar vette and make it into an 8 thousand dollar vette. But also other older sports cars. There is a big market for old Chevy's. Usually, it is the body work that makes an old sports car too expensive to fix up and paint. If you can do THAT part yourself? A cheap auto paint joint can do the rest, and do it cheaper and faster than you can learn how to do it at your house. Always get the polyurethane base coat clear coat; those enamel jobs are worthless and total sh--. I'm sure you knew that; just saying it for the novices here.
Easy money, totally worth it
How amazing t he e prices I'd metal fluctuates on a scrapyard,,whenever you bring a good load,,it's lesser cash valuw
I watch Mike the Scavenger on You tube, he tries to clean the aluminum and other metals to get more for it. But, yeah obviously you would have done better on the batteries.
Очень хорошие цены на металл ! У нас В России зарплата 200$ в месяц.
Cool little random video with breakfast. Did you say $200 an hour is probably not worth it?
Not when your chiropractor is $300 an hour but all joking aside I don't get as much for it in my area that I'm at now so it seems like a lot of work for very little reward
