Jersey Joe Walcott vs Rocky Marciano I
-
Jersey Joe Walcott defends the heavyweight championship of the world against 'The Brockton Blockbuster', Rocky Marciano. This was Walcott's second defense of the title. Because of his advanced age he was the underdog, but was still far ahead before the KO. There would therefore be a rematch the following year.
-
Their records at the time
Rocky Marciano: 42-0-0
Jersey Joe Walcott: 51-16-2
These fellows are 15 round fighters.. Walcott had great co-ordination and balance. He fought long enough to Ko Harold Johnson Sr. and Jr.The son being an exceptional Lt. Heavyweight champion. He was outpointing Rocky in this fight, and gave him a pasting in the 12th round. Rocky was so tough, fit and competitive,he could still summon that power at the finish. Two great warriors!.
Honestly, Marciano got in a lucky punch.
Rocky had 49-0 lucky punches as well.@@vgr112261
Rocky Marciano The Legend
Marciano was a warrior, relentless always moving forward seeking out an opportunity to drop his opponent. If you watch closely, you'll see it's not a random punch that knocks out Walcott. He's learned the timing of his opponent to know that exact moment he is open and connects on the chin, driving it left as Walcott's moving his head right.
Yeah, it's all timing
Goose bumps when Rocky lands that punch
That final right hand was a crushing blow. Jersey Joe was a tough dude, but that punch would have stopped anyone.
@si Markeyan always a excuse when ROCKY gets MENTIONED
Man, those are some of the heaviest body blows I've ever seen. Both of them unleashed some hammers to the mid section. How they could keep breathing is beyond me.
Such intent, such coordinated leverage, so fluid, Marciano’s whole upper body and legs were behind those punches, not just his arms.
Rocky Marciano una maquina de tirar golpes la constitución fisica mas fuerte del mundo habido en El boxeo .Los tres pesos completos mas grandes del mundo Joe Louis y Jack Dempsey y Rocky Marciano.
Yes, those who call Marciano clumsy and amateurish miss this entirely. It takes awesome athleticism to generate this kind of power, like hitting a baseball 500 feet; the whole body has to be in sync. And, as just seen, his power did not diminish even in the 13th round.
The great Rocky Marciano. This is one of the greatest action pact fights of all time! RIP Rocky and Jersey Joe!!!
Action Packed Lol! 🥊🥊a young Marciano struggling to beat a old fighter 10 years older than him. Marciano was overrated and his boxing skills sucked. I think Gerry Conney would have beaten Marciano.

action packed give me a break most of Marciano big fights came against blown up light weight fighters who had fame at lower weight classes Ezzard Charles who he fought twice Archie Moore who was about 40 years both great fighters at lower weight classes. He beat a old Joe Louis who was past is prime. Marciano was very overrated. 🥊🥊
@Steve Witte get real man! I don't care what Cus said he also said his fighter Floyd Patterson would beat Ali and we seen what happened to Floyd in those two bouts🥊🥊
That was brutal. Glad Walcott didn't die.
Marciano had a great trainer in Charley Goldman. He was lucky to have him and the others in his camp to help. They worked on his balance by tying a string around his ankles while he worked on the heavy bag. Goldman taught Rocky how to get the leverage for every punch he threw. Marciano would train relentlessly and Goldman had to tell him to stop. He was always in tip top shape, ready to go 15 rounds without punching himself out or tiring. He worked out on a 300 lb bag when most bags of the day were 75-100 lbs.He was a GREAT champion!
Yea and some don't realize he was really middle to light heavyweight. They list him at 188 pounds for the Walcott fight but he was more like 165.

The body shots Marciano was landing were brutal.
Body Punching is such a great weapon in boxing. It weakens opponent throwing punches downstairs over and over and over. It is also way harder to not land a body shot compared to a blow to opponent's head. Even if you hit arms into body the wearing down effect over and over pays a toll and weakens, tires out, and hurts your opponent. Too many boxers neglect far too often to use body punching in their attack on opponent in the ring. Yeah, Marciano was a master at the art of body punching.
I'm hard as steel. Body punches don't hurt me, except my coach broke my rib and I didn't feel it until the next day. Lol
It's the punches to the top of the head that affect me most. Got to avoid those
Rocky Marciano the only undefeated heavy weight fighter in the world. Tough Italian boy.
Yeah, fighting no names or washed up old men.
Michael jones He fought four hall of famers and this very fight Jersey joe was the current heavyweight champ. Archie Moore was a hall of famer and after rocky he won his next seven fights. You obviously don’t watch boxing.
That's right. And during an era when you fought any contender wanting your title. There was no strategic selection of fighters. They fought anyone good enough. Rocky was always the most beat up fighter also. You wouldn't have known he was the the winner looking at him. His style looks a lot like what Tyson adopted. Always ducking and weaving and then launching with a swinging left.

Great Video. Thanks for uploading this!
As a kid growing up in Brockton he was our hero. I met him one time at a thing at the YMCA for local kids. Nice guy. Humble. Quiet. He told us when he trained for a fight, one of the routines he used was the pool at the Y. He’d go in with ping pong paddles and hold in each hand, then throw 1000 uppercuts in each arm. He was a tank. Never gave up. And at 49 and 0 the greatest who ever was in my opinion. When we heard he died we were stunned. I can still remember kids yelling Rock died! We couldn’t believe it. So young
Yeah John I am sure he was your hero and all , but it would have been nice if he actually beat a good fighter in their prime. Wouldn't you agree?
@studentofsweetscience I think I have Archie Moore higher on my all time list then a lot of people. Very good fighter.
@studentofsweetscience Here is another thought, I do not like Ray Leonard, your thoughts, what did you think of Leonard? I thought him good not great or very good even, I just never cared for the guy.
@studentofsweetscience I agree , when evaluating fighters to try and leave my personal biases out of the equation. It is difficult however, one likes what he likes. I always like a guy who is good, but doesn't have to show up an apponent. Class guys, or what I perceive as class, Ray Leonard was the classic opportunist, he played Marvin and his camp and stole that fight. Watching some of those middleweight wars at that time, then watching Ray run around for 12 rounds in that massive ring was pitiful. I know guys who knew him personally from DC, and from what I hear the guy was big time cheap. Whatever, that debacle with Marvin not only turned me away from that division it turned me away from that sport. Ray Leonard, stole the second fight from Tommy as well. Then he speaks like he has this profound knowledge of the sport. What the hell was the second Duran fight? The guy had skill but lacked real toughness.I never cared for him, was on the fence sort a. But later he just seemed gutless.
@studentofsweetscience Also he does get props for that first Hearns fight, one of the great fights of that era. I just wanted to see a war in the Hagler fight and everyone was cheated I thought.
Watching clips of Marciano lately has given me a new appreciation for him. For a number of reasons I won't go into he doesn't get quite the appreciation I think he deserves. His conditioning was super human, he beat people with pace and power, and his defense was solid. He was very skilled he just had a style that looked different because it was designed for him. This man should be in every discussion over who's the GOAT. Even Ali admitted Rocky would given him a hard time and could've beaten him. He said he thought he was better than Frazier and Frazier gave him all sorts of problems.
Frazier would not have lost to Marciano.

@studentofsweetscience Rocky only fought guys who were past their prime or nobody's, he was nothing special. I know you white boys like to praise him but he was nowhere near the greatest heavy weight of all time, he's not even the greatest white heavy weight of all time. Vitali Klitschko in his prime would've beat the shit out of Marciano and so would Tyson Fury.
@studentofsweetscience Lets look at the tail of the tape for a few of his most noteworthy fights Marciano 28 vs Louis 37 Marciano 29 vs Walcott 38 Marciano 32 vs Moore 42 All of these guys were great fighters and would've beat Marciano in their prime. Face it, Marciano came up at a time when all the great heavy weights were too old or too young. Had he been boxing 10/15 years later, Guys like Ali, foreman and Frazier would've embarrassed him.
@studentofsweetscience So you're telling me that a 42 year old man with 176 professional fights is in his prime? LMAO, do you hear how ridiculous you sound? Your argument is hilarious, there's no man in the history of boxing that was in his prime at the age of 42. There's no reason for me to dispute what you're saying because you don't believe it yourself. You're just another WHITE boxing fan that thinks the world of mediocre white boxers........
Marciano patiently stalking Walcott, studying his moves to exploit every opening, wearing him down and waiting for his left hand to stay down just long enough to connect with his right cross. Thats champion boxing.

Rocky's defensive skills are under-rated. Watch how he moves his head away from the most powerful punches. With his short reach & height disadvantages, he took a lot fewer punches than people think. And was always in superb shape, never taking any opponent lightly.
Yeah, that head movement of Marciano's was key to avoiding big shots. The first video I ever saw of the him I watched the other guy because whoever the other boxer was seemed to be such a Neanderthal. That other boxer was the Rock, with that awkward looking but very effective style.

The greatest boxer ever - Rockey Marciano! Undefeated heavy weight champion of the world.
Greatest ever? Not to come at you but you’re a novice or extremely biased.
It is amazing how people who should have known better totally underestimated Marciano's skills for his entire career. He had great jab, the ability to slip and fade from power punches, a deadly body attack, great head and body movement, great balance, and a complex repertoire of punches. Yes he got hit maybe too much but that was because he was always moving forward no matter what the opponent was doing. Far more skillful than the "news media" ever realized.
I met Jersey Joe in Atlanta. Holyfield fight. 1985. Shook his hand. His hands were big as a catchers mit!
Mike SaLvadore that’s amazing. We don’t realise how tough and naturally big and strong these fighters were. Plus they were highly skilled.
Got that right
Most fighters have those hands, a neighbor of mine said Sonny Liston's hands were the biggest he ever saw. I shook hands with the late Bert Cooper his hands were massive, and mangled.
@studentofsweetscience Yeah fighters have huge hands for the most part, another story. I am going to work one morning, I run into middle weight Bennie Briscoe, in Philly. The guys hands were so scared and huge. Tough fighter too Bennie. Nice man, a little drunk though. Sad right. Had wars with Marvin Hagler.

That right at 12:10 was the most devistating knockouts in heavy weight history. It took doctors over 10 minutes to revive Jersey Joe.
Marciano is the best there has ever been.
He was good in his day but he honestly didn't face the competition that some of the other Heavyweight Champions faced. If you dont believe me look up the names of several of his first 35 fights. A lot of these fighters had losing records and some theres no information on. I am not saying he wasn't good he was the best in his day but this fight here is against a 38 year old Jersey Joe Walcott who had previously won the title by upsetting Ezzard Charles in his I think 5th attempt to win the title. Rocky's biggest two wins were over Walcott and Chsrles, LaStarza and a 40 year old Joe Louis. He didn't fight the competition that Ali fought, or Holmes or Louis abd Foreman, Holifield, Tyson. He just didn't I am sorry. Rocky scores a dramatic KO in this fight but it was a hard fight and he is cut and is struggling with a 38 year old Walcott. I cant see him at 185, 190 pounds being able to handle a 28 to 33 year old Ali. Ali stayed in with Frazier who applied incredible pressure and was 205 and could punch. Again no disrespect to Rocky but when you say greatest of all time you got to be able to support the argument.

See some folks here are knocking Rocky. You gotta really know what you're looking at to appreciate just how great Rocky was. Yeah, he was not the prototypical boxer many associate with greatness. But he possessed a combination of traits rarely seen in boxing. He may have been the best conditioned athlete in the history of combat sports. He had a chin that was second to none...Jake Lamotta excluded. His punching power was devastating. It's no wonder that he went undefeated. How do you beat a guy that doesn't tire, doesn't get hurt, and can wear you down with unrelenting pressure or put you to sleep with a single punch? And don't discount Rocky's skill level. He used his size disadvantage to his advantage. He knew how to get underneath bigger guys, roll with their punches, and counter with devastating power. And while he was not a guy who would dazzle you with combinations, he put together power shots in in unique sequences and at unconventional angles. That hook/uppercut he fired while at a distance hurts just to look at. The floor to fist power chain was devastating. But as I said, you need an educated eye to see all of that. And let's not forget that the man was 5'10 and just above 180 pounds with a meager 68 inch reach. Oh, and BTW...he had no amateur career to speak of and didn't turn pro until he was 25. The man was great. The are no "buts" to speak of.

Rocky was indeed a great fighter. His style is very intriguing to me. I will describe it in the following words: unrelenting, menacing, bobbing up and down (somewhat like a float when a bluegill takes the bait on a hook), a bone crushing left and right hook, and there is almost an innocence in his posture that seems to say, "Hey, come here so we can end this rather quickly and spare yourself the torture that will follow." I would have loved to see him fight Mike Tyson as an exhibition of the raw punching power of both men. And I would have loved to see him fight Muhammad Ali as an exhibition of what happens when raw power meets lightning speed. There is a computer generated fight between Ali and Marciano on KZhead.

The right hand punch that finished the fight could be the hardest punch I've ever seen landed by any fighter in any division. That punch could have killed Walcott it was so powerful. And Marciano was only about 190 pounds so all the more impressive.
Marciano weighed in at 184lbs for this fight
Both men were duking it out. Amazing fight during that day. Still amazing to see the punishment both fighters endured. The constant barrage of punches. Nowadays this fight would have been ✋ 🛑 earlier most likely not in Rocky’s favor
Stoped why they both LOOKED very strong why stop it
The problem with watching Marciano fights is I already know the outcome. He always won.
The greatest boxer of all time, strong as a bull and all natural, no juice ;)
THIS WAS SUCH A GRUELING FIGHT MARCIANO HAD WORN OUT WALCOTT WITH TREMENDOUS BODY SHOTS N IN THE 13th.ROUND HAD WALCOTT WIDE OPEN WITH HIS HANDS DOWN N THE ROCK DELIVERED THAT TREMENDOUS RIGHT
Its funny Dom I saw a bunch of wild left hooks, and a tired Walcott just got caught. He pummeled Rock in 11 and 12.
Marciano hit him with a lucky shot.
Best right hand ever thrown! Floored for the fist time in his career...cut & blinded for 4 rounds...behind on all scorecards....The Rock nails JJW with the "Suzie Q"...and becomes the heavyweight champion of the world! Champ from 1952 to 1956...49-0 43 KO's. Dies in the crash of a small plane near Newton Iowa on August 31, 1969...the day before his 46th birthday! A beast in the ring...and humble out of it!!!
Dude you need help. Go see your Doctor's. You repeat the same nonsense over and over and over and over again and again.
Obviously the highlight of the fight is the KO.....but after 5:34 Walcott hit Marciano with a brutal right hook to the ribs that really did hurt Marciano. Most fighters might've taken a knee there. That was brutal. Even the old microphones picked up the force of that shot.
You're right. I went back and watched that. That was one vicious blow.
Esse sim e o verdadeiro campeão.
Este extraordinar că putem vedea așa titani în box
What made Rocky so dangerous, he could do damage even at short range punches with either hand! Joe Walcott was a very good master at foot work. IF he had not got trapped in a corner , Marciano may have not landed the knock out punches.
Walcott looks like he needs a walker to help him get around the ring for Christ's sake.
Marciano was so well conditioned, and such a pressure fighter, he was going to trap you eventually.
It is funny how that Tremendous Right Hand from Rocky in the 13th Round( bad time to take a Nap Mr. Walcott ) was taken into their 2nd Fight.Jersey Joe was so wary all it took was a decent punch to put him on his butt and be counted out looking at the Ref the whole time.
Well all comments aside,Jersey Joe was not a 60 year old buffalo and he was good fighter and Rocky retired undefeated say what you want it stands and cannot be changed.
This generation of boxers in the 50s with Rocky may be some of the toughest most durable fighters compared to modern day fighters. The shots they take are mind boggling.
@CyderDrinkerDorset you're welcome!
Those who fought Rocky a second time didn't last as long as the first time.
In Philadelphia ?
Que tiempos.
Wow 💪
Marciano el número 1 de todos los tiempos nunca perdio.
I was wondering how much of a heart Marciano had in his time. and I came across a picture of him after his ezzard charles' fight, he almost had his nose hanging or ripped off, How the hell can one stands in front of those guys and trying to bring them down? haha that's a question only good boxers can answer. like i heard once: everyone has a plan till they feel the first big punch. salutes, guys, excellent vid btw. epic as hell.
Marciano flatten Ali at the latter’s peak? You got to be kidding. By the 8th round the fight would haven stopped. Marciano’s face would have been chiseled through, his eyes closed. Old man Jersey Joe went 14 rounds Ali and Jersey was nowhere comparable to Ali neither was Ezzard Charles. Marciano was at his peak. Had Marciano and joe Louis met when Joe was in his prime Marciano would have been flattened.
Don Curry vs Mike Senigal fight
ADRIAN!!!!! :P
@@hervinchung3675 Everybody WANG CHUNG tonite!!! :P
@@hervinchung3675 man no respect. Ali and him sparred.once way passed rockys prime and ali said his arms went numb. This guys power was from a different time and wouldve sliced through the more modern generations. People at this time could take way more punishment. Rocky could knock people out with body shots no doubt
Rocky Marciano was one bad dude I have a picture of my uncle Ramon Torres professional wrestler and Rocky Marciano was the special referee in his match in 1953 and I have the original picture my uncle Ramon wrestled the legendary Lou thesz👍😎
