The Thrilla in Manila Explained - Ali vs Frazier 3 Breakdown

Mortal Weapons the Fight Comic: www.modernmartialartist.com/m...
It was a Thrilla in Manilla. Muhammad Ali had done the impossible, recapturing the heavyweight title from George Foreman. But he was not satisfied. There was one man who had given him too much trouble. One man who could be pointed to as evidence that perhaps Ali was not the greatest heavyweight of all time. That man was Smokin Joe Frazier. Each had won one of their two epic encounters. Now it was time to put the rivalry to rest once and for all.
There was no telling how the fight would go. Each had refined and enhanced the skills they had pitted against each other prior.
And so, this fight was not a redo, but a continuation, built on the strategies, techniques, and intense personal hatred carried over from the previous two.
1st Fight
Their first match, known as the Fight of the Century had already become ingrained in the American psych as one of the greatest matches in history.
The fight had been fueled in part by the intense personal dislike the two champions felt for each other.
Ali had so enraged Joe that in his locker room before the fight, Frazier had prayed to god to help him kill Ali.

I truly believe this one fight (and the three against Frazier specifically) were the cause of much of Ali's brain trauma later in life. He took so many hard head shots in this fight, and in every fight against Frazier. When you're feeling like you want to fall asleep between rounds in this high-adrenaline environment something is not right in the brain. Watch some Frazier footage and see how many large men went down after just a couple of those shots that Ali took for 14 rounds. RIP, champ(s).
One of the Best bouts ever, respect, good sportsmanship unlike some clown who calls himself champ/the greatest who just sprints and marathons around his opponents when he knowns he is ahead in points 🤦🏿♂️
It was the fights after where he took the worst damage in. My opinion, but this should have been the match to end the career …
That’s a fact. In the Thrilla in Manila documentary Ferdie stated that Ali never passed a physical after this fight.
It wasn’t brain trauma it was Parkinson’s disease but this fight definitely accelerated the disease
@@cliffordwashindu2443 not really a boxing fan eh? A defensive genius with brittle hands who won more than one fight with hand fractures shouldn't be dismissed by a casual fan as a clown.
The amazing thing I seem to remember as a kid was that Ali's blows never seemed hard or crippling. It just seemed like he was sparring with someone. You couldnt really get the sence that he was punishing anyone with his blows. I guess that was his genious.
Could be a part he learnt from Pro Wrestling. Not about being fake, but about selling your opponent. How to become bigger than life character. He put over Frazier in their first match, even when Frazier was a dear friend to him Ali mocked him like a true Heel and lost. That did create buzz, that did made Frazier top dog, and they did had 3 matches which were selling out seats left and right. Ali controversial figure, one of the greatest boxers to ever live. One of the greatest entertainers that ever lived in a combat sport. I man that was a huge pro wrestling fan, and that culture is always being overlooked because there is a monopoly on it with the cheap imitation of wwe.

I’ve watched this memorable fight a number of times, but this is the first that I’ve noticed just how frequently Frazier punched Ali below the belt and received no warnings. Especially in the 9th and 10th rounds - you can’t miss it. Those are low blows, yet the ref either didn’t see them from his vantage point or didn’t feel them “low enough”. I love your channel, btw, and appreciate all the time and effort you put in to these peerless breakdowns of classic fights.
It’s a grey area because every ref is different but the hip punches were right at the bottom of the beltline. But it was his intent to take his hips away
They had a silent agreement. Everytime Ali thumbed Frazier punched a little low.
How many minutes were they fighting in this match?
@@smokeyjoe795 Ali never thumbed Frazier. I've watched the fight a couple of times after someone once suggested it. NOT ONCE in the entire fight. Ali held the back of Frazier's head and Frazier hit Ali low - that was their two "dirty" aspects - nothing else. Complete warriors
Ali never complained once and took it as, "it comes with the territory when you live in the game of Boxing." Many fighters today would holler at the referees or fall to the ground. Nonetheless Ali did take quite a few of those shots and they weren't weak and yet still carried onward like a champ. These Men were truly Warriors.

Exactly they've got to be from a different planet.. Standing in the scorching ring fpr 15 rounds is a feat in itself... Taking face/body bombs is impossible.

This fight will hold its own on any pundit's book. It is timeless and priceless in all contexts and shall remain so. Boxing has been shown by so many men to be a sport for brave hearts but these men stood and still stand out. One can go on and on but Ali and Frazier are truly great.

Ork Trukk Drivah Yeah man i understand that and the family would of course say they would want his health before money but YOU are the man and YOU do fo what a man has to do, which is provide for family. Ali was the man, but paid a price.
@Ork Trukk Drivah It's much easier for them to tell you that with a full stomach and a roof over their heads, so we'll never really know. But chalking it down to pure math, even in the developed world, the common man is making a much more dire trade every day of their lives.
Here for a good time not a long time.

I don't believe a better job could have been done as to what I witnessed in the viewing of The Thrilla in Manila ! An historical sports documentary at an epic level , hats off to all involved in the making !
The moment when Frazier is staggered at 24:23 and somehow stays on his feet gives me chills. I love Ali but Joe was an absolute warrior, to just keep coming at Ali when he couldn't even see is incredible. One good eye and one good arm and he was still able to destroy some of the best to ever get in the ring, he never got the credit he deserved. This video is a masterpiece, I've never done any martial arts but your videos are exceptional, and I love watching the breakdowns of the classic fights between the greats. “You can map out a fight plan. But when the action starts, you are down to your reflexes. That is where your road work shows. If you cheated on that in the dark of the morning, you are getting found out now under the bright lights”. Joe Frazier.

You can see that Mayweather uses many of Ali's moves, but that standing in front of Joe Frazier mess, Mayweather's footwork saves him from enduring that "on the ropes" onslaught of body punches. He makes sure to use that V-step until he can spot a fighter's strength and turn it into a weakness.

It’s astonishing this fight didn’t kill both men. He truly was the greatest. I say that for BOTH men. Excellent narration as well.
Especially given the heat. Apparently, it was over 30c in the ring under the lights, with severe humidity. Show me a fighter at any weight class today, with all the conditioning and supplements now available, who could fight with that intensity, in those conditions, taking that level of punishment for 14 rounds. I have to agree. What a special breakdown and editing compilation you've created. A 8 out of 10. Honestly! 10 being you were there and watched it live.
I know some people feel like Muhammad Ali went too far in his trash talking against Joe Frazier. But I think Frazier earned every piece of it by refusing to call him by his name and constantly referring to him as clay. But be that as it may, what a gorgeous and brutal fight this was!
He started with the Clay thing after Ali taunted him as an Uncle Tom.
@@vgr112261 no he didn't
Ali started it. And Frazier was very kind to Ali initially, lending him money to survive while he was in exile - that's well known. And that's how he was repaid - character assassination. Frazier had every right to respond to being denigrated by Ali as he was.
Ali wouldn't be the greatest without opponents like Fraser.
@Bowen Yuan his coach stopped the fight cz he knew that his fighter is done
@Bowen Yuan No, Ali definitely won that. He continued to dish out punishment, even after Joe was too far gone to do any fight-ending attacks. Ali not only won, he deserved to win.
@Bowen Yuan Ali would have still won imo. All he had to do was endure and give the last round to Frazier, he's tremendous at soaking up the strongest of punches. Plus I doubt Frazier had it in him to land a KO punch in that condition, neither of them would.
@Bowen Yuan his coach stopped it because he say how hurt Frazier was that coach knew Frazier had no quit. However he was also aware Frazier could have been killed in the last round. He couldn't hardly see and was beat horribly.
xKeNniii win or lose they are both amazing fighters with heart

Frazier must've been cut out of granite. He is one of the toughest, most resilient humans I've ever seen. The swelling you could see on his head at 26.51 is absolutely chilling...if any of us looked like that we'd be on our back on a gurney headed for the ER. His willpower and drive and persistence to keep moving forward in the face of such brutal punishment (and heat) is the stuff of legend.
Yeah & he looked worst in da 1st Ali Frazier fight. His head was swollen reminiscent of Emmitt Till.
Yea, that swelling was scary too see. concern it was more than just swelling. Just imagine he won the 1st fight however; the head trauma was even worst!!
It's called hate. He really hated Ali.
Agree, the punishment he took in this fight and still kept coming at Ali. And Ali too, each one of Fraziers hooks were fight ending punches but Ali had a granite chin. Last few rounds both Ali and Frazier had nothing left in them but were fighting out of sheer will and determination. No heavy weight today can take this much punishment and still keep going. Truly the golden era of boxing
You must have never been in an actual fight
The commentary made these very exciting, it was as if I never really watched them before. Excellent way of telling the whole story. Best commentary I have ever heard. 👏👏👏

And this is the fight Ali's ring doctor Dr.Ferdie Pacheco resigned after this he advised Ali to no longer fight because he told Ali that his speech was slurring and he had slight trembling and he could no longer witness himself slowly killing himself in the ring.
You're not kidding. When you're in your mid-20's it's easier to bounce back from these kind of fights even though the damage still is accumulating, but by the time you reach your mid-30's you're already past your physical prime and won't ever fully recover from the damage taken in fights of this intensity. Guaranteed, there were many days that each of these men went through for the rest of their lives where they were reminded of the damage that they took in this fight.

Sebastian Quintana sorry for saying this But I believe that Frazier could of taken Ali in his Condition
Dan B that’s fucked up
Ali's greatest skill, was his speed, and his ability to take a punch. All too often, he would be seen starting to move his head backwards right before he got hit, greatly reducing the impact of his opponent's punches.
Sebastian Quintana true he would of killed people if it was his fist but he was wearing boxing gloves
