The combat experience in Poland and France showed that soldiers using methamphetamine were showing clear signs of superiority in combat. They fought without fear and, above all, didn’t get tired. The case, however, also showed the harmful effects of the stimulant. Its excessive use led to physical and mental exhaustion, as Reich Health Führer warned in 1939. These negative side effects led to the ban of Pervitin by the Reich Opium Law in June 1941.

Imagine being an Allied soldier fresh out of high school and on your first day of combat, you see a drugged up German screaming and charging you with a MG42 Edit: Ik you can’t actually charge at someone with a MG42. This ain’t Battlefield V. It’s just a joke.
That sounds both funny and awful. I'd imagine if the guy is doing something like charging you with an MG42 he'd probably be screaming incoherently
Ahhhh, those were the good old days. 😂
I’d turn to my Sargent and say “Sarge! Are you seeing this?!? It’s methed up!!”
Reportedly, that happened during the Korean War too. I've heard multiple people claim that many in the Chinese and North Korean armies were drugged up to be more aggressive and energetic in their attacks on the UN Coalition forces.

In 2011 I met a US veteran who fought in Normandy back in 1944. He told me he one time came across a POW German officer who, and these are his words, "had a wide, toothy grin with bloodshot eyes." I then asked him if he had ever heard of Pervitin (he said no). I explained to him what it was and what it was used for. He then looked and me and said that before he was sent home in 1945 some of his buddy's pressured him to try some. Told him they were Lifesavers. He didn't take them.
I remember reading about legendary US general Matthew Ridgway claiming he saw similar drugged behavior from North Korean troops during the Korean War. He said they were some of the most aggressive soldiers he had ever faced, and was convinced they were on a mixture of steroids and other stuff.

There was the one Finnish soldier who was running, actually skiing away from the Russians. He was getting very tired and thought he could take a couple of tabs. Problem was, they had froze into on big chunk, so he ate them all. That put him on a crazy trip that lasted a few days. He saw dancing bears and skied right through Russian camps. He eventually came down and found his way back to his side of the lines.
Right! His name was Aimo Koivunen. He just zipped around hella fast on his skis (400km!), subsisting off of pine buds & ONE Siberian jay for one week. By the end of his "joyride" he weighed 95 pounds and had a 200bpm heartbeat. Lived to the ripe old age of 76 (considering what he did) and died peacefully!

U.S. soldiers used benzedrine, another form of speed. The tablets were in every enlisted man's kit. It's not something often shown in WW2 films, but it was absolutely vital, especially during long battles. This is why benzedrine became so popular with the Beat Generation in the late 40's and 50's, as a lot of soldiers became addicted to it and there was a huge black market for it. Writers like Kerouac used it constantly, as they found it could keep them writing for days.

The allies also had their own version after they discovered crashed stuka planes with pervitin cases. Before that nobody could explain how stuka pilots were able to maneuver their famous stuka dive without passing out and pervitin was the answer. When Allied scientists discovered that, they were quick to replicate it to make their own version and for a long time durin WWII both sides were high as a kite on it until it was gradually taken out, at least from the public eye, because their side effects after years of abuse became too clear and unavoidable.
in some emergency kits given to pilots in i think vietnam there was also tablets of dextroamphetamine to help them stay awake in case they were crash landed behind enemy lines i mean this is obviously different because it was for emergencies and not used all the time but still pretty interesting
@@Ocewot also is/was in emergency med kits for being taken while ditched in the ocean. It keeps you awake while fighting the possible hypothermia and able to swim longer. P.S. Heck, even in the Pacific if the water is at 67F/19-20C it will just take hours to lower your core temp and kill you instead of less than an hour. This is so wild and mad-scientist level villainous it’s almost hard to believe.
Allies used benzedrine, Axis used meth. Both sides used stimulants to extend the ability to fight longer and go without sleep without losing performance. It wasnt known how abuse could cause psychosis(it was known but not thought to be as serious as it actually is) and people to do things they might not do normally. It was especially popular with bomber pilots too, flying for days on end over and over.

I think you will find that "our" side also took similar substances in WW2, and are probably still issued to this day. Ive never used meth (or any other drug), but I was on Duromine for about a month in 2020, a weightloss drug, which is essentially derived from meth. I found myself incredibly focused on my tasks at work, to the point of zoning out. I didnt get distracted, bored or tired. I can understand why a lot of people use meth and and similar substances. I also read about this housewife who used meth and found that she was able to keep on top of everything (keep the house clean, kid fed, etc) while she was under the influence. Let me be clear, I am in no way endorsing, condoning or approving of meth use. It is very addictive , and in the long term, any producitivty gains in the short term can be wiped out by all the usual symptoms.
The us air force definitely still uses amphetamines today
Up until 2017, US Air Force (and potentially other military branches) prescribed meth to pilots for long endurance flights or for critical missions. Also, back in WW2, American and British soldiers got high using cocaine and Benzedrine, an amphetamine from 1930s, the american equivalent of Germany's Pervitin. But this video makes you believe them germans cheated on WW2 or something and that's why they won so easily in the beginning.

Most of these Jews lived in Poland, Belarus, Ukraine and Russia (all 3 under the USSR at the time). Almost all of these territories rich in Jewish people came under German occupation. Methamphetamine absolutely raises blood pressure and tachycardia. It's probably not a good idea to tell people that it doesn't....
just so you know during World War II, dextroamphetamines and methamphetamines were widely distributed among Allied, German, and Japanese soldiers to keep them awake and alert on the battlefield. Beyond the front, civilians who worked in factories manufacturing goods for the war effort were also using the drug to boost productivity.

Meth heads tend to be wild and unpredictable, now put them in a stressfull chaotic enviornment of war and you get complete chaos
@@allanbiden572 but the chaos lead to an victory rather than defeat in the early days when you would think soldiers high on drugs would be destroyed rather quickly
They were probably using some of the maneuvers that I would use when in complete control of characters I don't care about(see XCOM with mind controlled or bonus soldiers or any RTS game). So lets say they are behind a tank getting fired at, you might see them run out from both sides of the tank at the same time while shooting at you. Such an action would normally not happen because generally people don't want to die, but in that drugged up state they don't care. Moreover the meth is helping them perceive the world faster too, so while your squad might be gunning down one of those guys, the other one who ran out the other side can instantly see where you are while tossing grenades and firing exactly where he needs to. These actions could actually take out your whole squad from just 2 German soldiers and the effect would be debilitating on morale. Couple that with the Germans never seeming to get tired and it wouldn't be surprising that whole platoons would start fleeing in terror. Just to put a cherry on top of it all... Meth also removes your sense of pain, so stabbing these guys probably does nothing in the short term and certain bullet wounds are also probably like shooting a zombie where you have this guy who gets shot in the torso 5 times and is STILL charging you while firing(because by sheer luck all 5 bullets missed his heart, lungs, and major arteries preventing him from passing out). Even in a video game that is an enemy I would do everything to avoid fighting and in an FPS I would rage quit calling it bullshit.
@@MNM-lq9te It's a product of it's time. Guns back then weren't that accurate so if you had lack of fear these guys had you might actually be able to charge a defensive line and survive. It wasn't until we get near perfect accuracy guns that such acts were truly suicidal. Playing some of the older FPS's based in world war 2 you can see why moving really fast and doing YOLO stuff could actually work. It's just really hard to get the shots to land that you need.
I’d imagine they would do wack crap like just charging their positions while firing off their guns
Methamphetamine makes you confident, heightens your senses and dulls feelings of empathy. Ideal to make the perfect soldier.

Honestly, sounds like a fricking blast. What I’d give to be a German soldier during the 30s and 40s Beats life nowadays. Boring AF
Yes! Although, the heightened sense of awareness and confidence only works at first. Eventually, drug addicted soldiers become delerious, distracted, unfocused, and are just looking for their next fix. This is probably why they did so good in Poland and France, early in the war, but then everything turned by the time the Soviet campaign began.
@@blackfacegaming191I wonder if the people who wanted nothing but peace would change with you. I don’t think so since the world is so horrible. It was War yes, but you gotta say they had a duty and they will be remembered until end of humanity.
So my father was a ww2 pilot avengers torpedo and dive bombers off of carriers in the Pacific. He had regular meds (Meth) just like your story about drugged German soldiers. Meth was given to him, and all the pilots he knew, to stay awake from bombing the Japanese and getting back to the carriers. Talk about that dude.
damn, that look on the german soldier's face is incredible
The animation just keeps getting better and better. Good job.

Meth was insanely huge in the German hierarchy. Makes the blitzkrieg tactic the Germans utilized make a lot of sense. We still utilize blitzkrieg in the US for our tank warfare, notably in desert storm and desert shield. It was impossible to stop with tank to tank battle (with our higher tech tanks) so the opposition buried their tanks and used them as turrets and we responded by blowing up anything with a heat signature. Unfortunately we killed our own men in the process. Was also heavily utilized by many pilots. But as a pilot myself who has taken them I don’t think it’s cost effective.
GAH, that last image is terrifying!!!

It would be Extremely Interesting to have a Large Enough Supply of the Original Pervitin and the Test it Against Different Batches of Modern Methamphetamine !!!
When you got fear, get high and get a machine gun to be a german rambo.
Just when I thought the Germans couldn’t get any more crazier…
@@kruggmichaels8958 Especially when for some reason soldiers on meth are described as lunatics like in the video, while in reality it really just gives you a considerable energy boost and makes you feel confident
@@k3psu48 And then you blow your brains out from severe paranoia... Those are the effects when it's not abused, which it almost always was due to its addictiveness
Talk to the Japanese
@@k3psu48 That’s the truth though. Did you skip the video? The drugs Germany and Japan used contained ingredients that made them more aggressive and destroyed the mind if continually used.(Hitler himself was a victim of that). The drug US pilots used was less aggressive and addicting than those. The only addictive drug the US used was morphine but it was only reserved for medical reasons.
@@braydicus Yeah, but Lots of people coming to Germanys defense for its actions in WW2 is kinda concerning.

RAF crews used these too, as part of the emergency kit. A Spitfire pilot got shot down during operation Jubilee into the English channel. Afraid that he will need to paddle for days to get back, he ate all his pills. He was lucky tho and got picked up by a rescue boat soon after. When he returned back to his base, he spent two days and two nights partying non stop in a bar, until he suddenly dropped down sleeping and slept for two more days. True story.
one of the cool actions referring to WW2 and meth,is described in the book,Night of the Triffids, when they attack the Isle of Wight, great book, both parts, by the way😄👍✌️

This is like in Wolfenstein games where player encountered German soldiers on drug who went insane. How will you going to defeat them?
Big guns 50 Cal or more
I thought after Barbarossa it became discontinued fairly quickly since the days long crash afterwards ended up being a net slowdown for the infantry divisions trying to catch up to the tanks. It was used in the luftwaffe though to allow for their grueling shifts with their lack of pilots after the British trashed them in the Battle of Britain.
Up to the end of the war medical officers were allowed to give it out to drivers, pilots etc.. during long time operations etc.. There were however strict regulations and guidelines ( which was not always adhered too) when and how long it could be used as they had over time had become well aware of the negative side and after effects of the stuff
