Are Power Tool Battery Packs Fixable? Let's Find Out!
In this video I'm working on fixing something I haven't fixed before - 2 broken power tool battery packs. Since sometimes the battery is the post expensive part of a power tool it would be great if they were fixable. One is a DeWALT 20V Max Lithium Ion 5 AH battery and the other is Milwaukie 18V 2AH battery pack.

I know a lot has already been said at this point so I'd like to simply say thank you. I look forward to you and your teams videos and am excited to see new content. I'm getting older and there aren't a lot of channels out there anymore I look forward to seeing new uploads. You've scratched that niche interest for me and kept me entertained for years. Hearing you talk about what you're going through in the same casual tone as all your other videos broke my heart a little. I also recognize that you're processing this in the best way for you, while trying to keep your community informed and entertained. I respect that a lot. Again, thank you.
Thank you for your support! I can't tell you how much you and others positive comments mean to me. It makes everything just a little easier! Also, so glad you like these videos. I enjoy making them so it's great knowing that people like watching.
God bless you
Sorry to hear about your health problems you've helped me fix a few problems with my tech and hope you get better my heart goes out to you and yours
I missed you Tronixfix
Big respect to @ccbbaaron for that donation and comment. 100% agree btw. You’re one of the few KZheadrs who still inspire and people love watching you. You’re doing great!
Hodgkins lymphoma survivor here. The process it tough but doable. Honestly your videos helped get me through my treatment. Best wishes for your treatment.
I’ve just undergone chemo and radiotherapy for cancer of the neck and throat! I’m still here! You got this! Good luck!
I don't really ever Comment on KZhead videos but I just want to say that the level of respect I have for you is immense. Not only are you battling one of the hardest battles human species has had to face your still putting out videos like a TANK! You inspire not only me but all of us who love you and what you do. You have inspired an entire generation to preserve the media we grew up with and treat it with the respect it deserves. Thank you for being you ❤
my father beat Lymphoma, Bone cancer and prostate cancer all within 10 years. Hes fully recovered and doing very well! You got this dude!
I think its all been said already, but thank you for all the entertainment over the years and the community is here for you. Stay strong :)
Thank you! Really appreciate your support
Steve, I don't care what you look like, you're a good guy and an electronics badass. You have the right to repair yourself too! Best wishes and good luck with treatment and recovery.
Hi Steve, I work at Batteries Plus. I've done a lot of repairs on drill batteries and rebuilt them as well. For your DeWalt battery, the minimum voltage for the charger to recognize it needs to be charged would be 16 volts to about 15.5. This is because it has multiple different batteries in it and those batteries are 18650s. Each one of those batteries have a 3.7 volt charge. 18650s minimum voltage required to charge would be around 2.5 volts. Multiplying that by how many batteries it has gives you the minimum requirement for the charger to recognize it needs to be charged
Do you guys repair Packs with 18650's or larger lithium cells at your batteries plus? Cuz all we used to do at the one I worked at were the Ni-CD and Ni-MH ones.
@@UpintheAir1395 Hey man! My store doesn't work on the lithium packs due to the possibility of there being damaged lithium and shorting out the electronic causing the batteries to overload. I am just familiar with the packs because I use 18650s for other purposes.
I'm shocked that an electronics guy gave up on fixing a battery, or heck, even put it back on the charger, without checking the voltages of the individual cells. Milwaukee in particular might just flip a switch in software and say "never try to charge this again" after a couple failures. 14.5V means nothing if that's 3.6v per cells on 4 cells, and one cell at zero. Or... just try to charge up the weak cells manually and see if they take some energy. It's so simple and he didn't even check!
I have fixed over a dozen old batteries some with water damage etc. only see one bad board surprisingly. Red green one was definitely like Jesse said low voltage. I usually balance charge the cells first to at least 3.5 volts so they all match. If one cell is very weak I usually replace it which is a pain. That spot welder you have doesn’t seem very strong. Mine was cheap under $40 and will melt those nickel strips like butter if I don’t watch the level. I usually test before use so I don’t melt something I need lol.
@@MattsAwesomeStuffThis guy is used to fixing circuitboards on ps5:s, xbox:es and so on. Not fixing batterypacks for powertools. This was a spinoff-video so you can't blame him for not having knowledge about these type of repairs.
Good luck on your treatment! I was diagnosed with nonhodgkins lymphoma when I was 11 and have been cancer free for 17 years. You got this!
Hey Steve, breast cancer survivor here, you got this and many people are here for you.
My husband loves your videos and watches all the time. He told me about your diagnosis. I'm adding your to my prayer list and will continue to pray for your recovery. May God give your peace and courage. Keep that positive attitude! 🙏🏻
Hi, Steve! I'm sorry to hear about your health! Don't worry, I'm sure everything is gone be fine soon! My wife already had lymphoma, was a dificult time, but today, 5 year later she's doing great, we have a 9 months old daughter! I will be cheering for your health! Love your videos man! A big hugh from Brasil!
Steve! I cannot express how much you have changed my outlook on small electronics repairs. I hope for the best in your recovery.
Much love bro, my wife (34y.o) is battling triple negative breast cancer. She JUST finished 6months of intensive chemo last week (not out of the woods yet). You got this mate 💪 positive attitude, plenty of rest, but keep your mind active. Sending love from Australia
Hey steve. It’s very rare I post comments on KZhead I just watch and like but I had to let you know I’m thinking of you and wishing you good health! Countless hours of knowledge and entertainment have come from you and you massively nurtured my passion for repairs! so thanks so much! Take care man❤
Take all the time in the world sir. Your health is far more important than a weekly video. As for cancer, you've got this, the world needs its best electric repairman.
With the amount of things you fix Steve, you will 100% fix your body. Good health and great video buddy.
I wish you the best Steve for the upcoming months. It shocked me hearing this about your health, but you'll beat this terrible illness. Thanks for sharing.
Steve, my wife and I love your videos and were shocked to hear of your diagnosis. Best of luck with your treatment. We will be praying for you and your wife, and always wishing the best for you guys!
Love your videos, Being an electrician with minimal electronics experience I was able to fix a couple of Nintendo switches and a playstation 4 pro after watching your KZhead. I am a 3 time cancer survivor with the last one being stage 4. The cure is rough but 8 years later I am still here. You got this Steve!
I had my prostate removed 15 months ago because I had cancer. It was like someone hit me with a bat when they told me. I was worried because I did not know how the future was going to be. The best news was that it had not spread and I wish the same for you. I have been getting my PSA checked so that my count does not start going back up. God bless you and stay positive. You will get thru this.
I can still remember when my mother had to go through her Treatments too. And you are a strong mind person. I will be praying for your quickly recovery. God bless you. And your family..
I’m so sorry to hear about your health. You have been so calming, so insightful, and very clear in every video. May you recover Steve!
Steve, I went through a pretty rough radiation + chemo regime last year, and keeping focused on work and hobbies was a nice distraction and definitely healthier than just curling up into a ball and feeling sorry for myself. So it's good to see that you're still making content. Take care of your mental and physical health, and be sure to kick cancer's ass.
Thanks for the comment! I don’t have to go through radiation so I’m thankful for that. You keep your chin up too!
Just wanted to say that I’m praying for you and your family. Jesus loves you.
You got this Steve, you will make full recovery! Been watching your videos for years already, thank you for all the amazing content you've been giving us!
Sorry to hear about the health issues … always enjoy watching your videos. I have learned so much from you. Thinking of you and praying for your speedy recovery and health.
man, sorry to hear about your diagnosis. prayers to you man. you have been an inspiration for me to repair things instead of throwing them away. I really enjoy watching all of your content. I pray you get better.
You are a huge inspiration to fix my own things, it’s sucks when you can’t fix your own self but I’m sure you’re in good hands and you’ll make a quick and thorough recovery like all your fixes! Stay strong! 💪
I missed the original post where you told us that you were ill. I really enjoy watching your videos - I find them very soothing. You make it look so easy, it makes me think I can do it! (I've already fixed a remote control at work that just needed a clean with IPA!) It's rubbish that you're poorly, but great that you are being looked after and receiving treatment. I wish you and your family well, as well as wish you a speedy recovery. Thank you for all your content so far.
Sending so much love your way and hoping for a speedy recovery. ❤
