  • Thanks for working with us Jake. It was a fun job. We safely dropped 14 cottonwoods and alders and cleared a ton of blackberries in under 5 hours and the customer is happy. And for the record I'm only 58! :)

    • For me, it's easier to keep up with, and the handle is not as long which grabs everything when you're walking through bushes and stuff, but that's just me. I don't cut as much timber as I ounce did. But let me tell you this though you can't beat an ax when it comes to cutting stuff around a tree .

  • My cousin and I love working in the woods. Our favorite pastime is firewood season and cleaning up family property. We were tired of spilling bar oil all the time. We use a push button dispenser laundry detergent jug for our bar oil now and we really like it. It's a little slower to fill the saw but never spill oil now. To us it's worth the extra few seconds to keep things cleaner and les waste. Especially with the price of oil now. When it's cold we set the oil jug by the heater vent in the truck on the way to where we're working to warm it up so it pours better too.

  • I have a small Gränsfors axe it's a purpose built wedge banger that came with the handle "twisted" it's supernice cause like you said most of the time you bang wedge's and do very little chopping. This axe was made in a small batch here in Sweden and i lucked out and got one but what i want to say is that it works really well for small axes heads but I prefer the handle hanged as i with heavy heads like to have maximum control when chopping even if it's a small part of the time you use the axe. You usually don't chopp your leg banging a wedge.

  • Enjoyed the video. Cottonwoods break easy...and clean. Once you get use to the way they snap they're a lot of fun. Climbing can be a little nerve racking....but still fun limbing them out.....as long as you have a nice drop zone. Rigging should be set up fish pole like to spread the weight.

  • I have a few curved handles on axes and hatchets, but I find the straight is better all-around for me. I've chopped down several 20"+ trees with a double bit and/or a straight handle jersey. Straight handle rafting axe (hardened poll) ought to be hard to beat for driving wedges for felling and no impediment to chopping unless the handle is really short. In my opinion, the curved handle is a nuisance, but most think it looks cool. Now, curved handle backwards for felling -- that was thinking outside the box! Imagine if it had been great.

  • Glad to see you try this because I've wondered the same thing. I wonder if it feels so weird because you're essentially using a hammer on an axe handle? I don't know that I've ever seen a hammer with as much of a curve as an axe handle

    @justinstanley4196@justinstanley41966 ай бұрын
    • I used to work construction, but what I'm typing is more of a "what I think based on my experience" and not an "I absolutely know" type of thing. You develop a good sense of wrist positioning and the alignment of your wrist, elbow, and shoulder to make a powerful and efficient swing without sacrificing accuracy or slowly damaging the tendons in your arm. A curved handle would completely change that alignment as well as the motion of your swing. What I think was happening to Jake was a little different though. If you look at a hammer the face of it is parallel to the center line of the handle. With a curved handle, there's only one spot where the center line of the handle is parallel to the face. Anywhere else, and the difference of the angle between the back face of the axe and the center line of the handle makes it so that there's a bit of a sideways force transferring through the length of the angle and making it so you're losing power and control over your swing.

  • Longer handles on heavy heads are for straight down or low swings. Maybe try a 2.5 or 3 pound hammer head without a blade. I like the experiments. I'm guessing you are just use to the shorter handle.

  • With the "velocity" of the swing, it is also technique. Most people don't know how to swing an axe for maximum impact

    @williammaxwell1919@williammaxwell19196 ай бұрын
    • Watching Jake's leading hand slide along his straight handled axe is how it should be done for maximum force. Most people swing an axe with both hands with a death-grip on the end of the handle which is also hard work
