They will never forget the things you done for them, it will last their lifetime. Great Job Hank. They will probably keep this truck for a very long time as well.
Really-? A boomer, exploding gM pickup yikes these poor girls don’t know what they are in for, nice that they are into it though-shame on gM for building the “square body” for so many years, but they got away with it
Yep I've had my 72 Cheyenne truck for 35 years that I got from my pa and everytime I drive it i think of him....RIP pa I miss you
Put old shifter on colom in park it will start
The world needs more parents and grandparents like you to get them kids off them Electronic devices and out and do hands-on good job.
Cause that’s what grandpas are for!!!!! Awesome job Hank.
Im 13 and got an 82 k20 nice to see other people my age enjoy these trucks
Noticed the steering column still had the selector ... if it is still hooked to the safety switch and not in park position on calum...no beano...no start.... so check it quick. Then chase your power supply to switch if not the safety switch.😉👍
Exactly what I was thinking
I was yelling that to my TV the old shifter was knocked just enough to not turn the key all the way or no start
@@genebrewer1422 😄😄😄I kinda was also
lol I was yelling at my tablet too! Turn the column
Exactly you are 100% on point I've been a mechanic ever since I was a little boy and I've had many trucks is it have the exact same thing so yes make sure that the steering column is in the park position or neutral
So awesome that you spend time with your granddaughters! This will mean a lot to all of you and they will never forget this! Great video!
It used to be a column shift. Sometimes you have to wiggle the oh gear selector on the column and it might start.
I thought the same thing
I've had several of those trucks that was manual to automatic transmission swapped and the automatic column shift to floor shift automatic swapped almost always require messing with the shifter tube collar and finding where it is supposed to be and holding it up usually while trying to start the truck it's why on the three of them swapped nightmares i ended up with i put manual shift transmission steering columns in them got tired of messing with the shifter tube collar to get it to start..
That's awesome yall doing it together
It's great you get to spend quality time with your grandchildren. It's also rare to see kids that old interested in old vehicles let alone getting their hands dirty. I hope it all goes well and quickly so they don't loose interest and continue to like and save the old stuff. If it's not saved it's lost forever. Good luck and I can't wait to see the three of you getting it safe for them to use and enjoy.
Somebody at GM had the ingenious idea of wrapping the exhaust right around the starter, I had to replace a solenoid, and I've heard about others doing the same thing, you have to wait until the engine cools down until it will crank up again. Other than that, those 350s are great engines. Beautiful young ladies, I bet their parents have to constantly chase off the young men that are hopelessly in love 🙂
@davekauffman8727 .. it didn't run long enough for the starter to get hot enough not to work .. that's a column shift truck thatwas converted to floor sometimes you have too turn the bowl of the column to make sure the neutral safety switch is engaged..
I'm just at the go kart stage with my grandson, but trucks are just around the corner! 😂 This will be a great series to watch.
These young women are awesome. They're doing what most young men these days wont do. Great job ladies. Awesome Grandpa you have there
I still have the 1977 C10 I was driving back when the wife and I were dating. Our son has claimed it, so at some point I've gotta help him get it roadworthy again.
Hank, you better get ready to get those twins new manicures at the nail salon after working on that project 😄😄
😂that's written into their contract!!
im glad to see how ur grand girls are always wanting to lear and u teach them cuz they will aways need that in today world i always share everone of ur videos to help u out have bless easter
I bet the girls will keep the truck forever as a sentimental value that they spent time with their grandpa
Beautiful young woman enjoy every moment with them because as you know it goes so fast. My youngest daughter just turned 24 graduated college and left the nest. Man it flies and the best part is you’ll have a video of this remind you of the good times✌️
Love to see young folk into the old square body trucks!! And even more so with theses young girls with there nails and all they still put that tire on with no hesitation!!
Didnt think you were old enough to have grandkids that age.Sounds like you are already a bad influence.Classic truck, even had factory a/c, parts are everywhere and needs to be saved. Have a blessed Easter my friend.
Hank I see it use to be a column shift maybe the column safety switch is still hooked up make sure column is all the in park
This reminds me so much of myself and my daughter. The two.of us built an 86 square body with a built 5.9 and a turbo 400 trans to go sled pulling. I spent way more money on it than my wife liked but I new where she was every Saturday night for months of the year and she wasn't getting into trouble so I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Teach em the right way not the (Hank) way. Hahaha. -Enjoyed the video. Keep em coming-
I love these trucks because you can get to everything easy and you can crawl under the hood with the engine if you need to. Love the older trucks. Nice find y'all.
hank good too see you doing what your doing with your grand kids, that truck is a 80's to 85 chevy 1/2 ton. 70 models the headlights are round and the side markers lights on a 72 to 79 chevys the side marker lights on the fenders are up and down instead if side to side like you have, but besides the grill and headlights and fender it's basically the same truck despite minor changes.
hank your correct on the year it just has a 80's hood and front end on it. the interrior guages are 73 to 79 square body
Have a blessed Easter to you sir and your family! Thank you so much for continuing to put out fun and wholesome content for us to enjoy.
And here I thought you was an old man 🤣 1: old chevy are 2 key, square ignition round doors. 2: I noticed it's still has the column shift, so maybe it got bumped so the neutral safety switch knocked out. 3: there's a rod that goes from key switch thru column to can't remember name to box close to firewall, and4: if it's a '75 it's got a newer front clip. 73 -80 have vertical marker lights and 81 up have horizontal
Not only that but the '73-'79 have round headlights not square
The old shifter collar on the steering column has to be in Park or Neutral position to start. Had to figure that one out once before myself, Ha.
I have a square body gmc that had the collom shifter setup for the transmission I would check that out to see if that is in park
I would check the column shifter and see if it is all the way up , the park switch is probably still connected to it in the column and it would stop it from starting if it isn't in the right position. If thats not it, see if you have 12v on the bendick's wire at the starter when the key is turned, if it doesn't, then it probably is the ignition switch in behind the key tumblers is bad, It didn't look like it was springing back when y'all turned the key. I would be careful of that froor shifter because i bet it will start in any gear, because you aren't using the column shifter which controls the key safety switch
My best guess, or where I would start would be the safety neutral switch. The old GM trucks had the safety neutral switch on the steering column in the column shift design. This means that it doesn't matter where the ratchet shifter is, as long as the column shifter location is correct for the safety neutral switch. As close as the ignition is to the old column shifter location, I wonder if it got bumped the last time it started...either way, best wishes, hope it all works out. Great video, thank you for sharing.
Correct
No sooner than you said don't chip a nail I was thinking if these young ladies get thru this project without breaking a nail I will be very impressed.😅
Great memories for all… what a great project. Grands are special !
There is a rod that goes from the key switch to the connection switch it can fall out. easy fix..
yup, looks like the ignition switch down the column is shot
Neutral safety switch. Should have put the transmission in neutral and tried to start it. If the shift linkage is slightly tweaked, the truck thinks it's in gear and disables the starter circuit. And with someone doing a homemade column to floor shift conversion, they might not have wired that up correctly.
You know some of the best memories I have is working and learning how to do things with papa even though everything had to be done his way or it was wrong I still enjoy spending time with him still do he’s 82 still gets up and works every day he got the body of 50 year old
Giving your granddaughters memories that will last their lifetime
I'm from New Hampshire and I saw one of the girls is wearing a Maine shirt. I live about 15 min from the state line. I'm also building a 77 c10 with my 16 year old daughter. Make those memories.
First thing is to check the battery connections before doing anything with the neutral safety switch or the ignition switch. A poor connection at the battery can give you power in the cab but wont be enough for when the starter tries to turn the engine over. Of course also check the battery cables themselves.
Papa Ham! That’s awesome. My little grandbuddy calls me Papa Don. Those girls will remember this forever. That’s the kinda things good ol’ country songs are written about!
That square body looks to be in pretty good shape I bet it will make a nice one I enjoyed the video Happy Easter everyone
Happy Easter!
Happy Easter, and God bless you! Jesus is alive!

Good Afternoon Hank and Happy Easter to your family and I hope you are having a fantastic day today , Sir ! 😊
Great job Hank, it's good to see you and the granddaughters working on the truck together. I showed my daughters and sons somethings on cars, so even if they don't work on there on car they will have some kind of knowledge on cars. So they can't get shifted by someone else.
Take a set of jumper cables from the battery to the starter! Eddie
Be sure to go back for the four runner. The girls will love that one too.
I can't wait to see the Old School Chevy K10 Square body Lifted Off-road.
listen to hank speaking like he knows anymore than these little ladies lol
Hell I was thinking it
Great video. I had the 3/4 ton same year it was a beast. It loved fuel. The Young lady’s will love it
I think It's great what you are doing with these videos. Teaching this younger generation about the older vehicle mechanics Is wonderful. Great video and can't wait to see the next one. If the neutral switch Is still on the column then make sure to twist the part that had the original selector counter clockwise so It engages the switch so It will start. Just A thought.
Papa Ham. I like that !
Sir this is absolutely wonderful, it warms my heart to see this family's need to be like this more and more love and peace to all.
Have a joyful and blessed Easter guy's
Good shape for the shape it's in
Love an old-school Square body build. An getting to see poppa Ham teach em how to work on there own vehicle priceless. Enjoy watching as always.
It could be the little button by the ignition that locks the steering wheel. If it’s not locked it may not let you turn the key to start.
❤ those girl will have one awesome square body. When it's done. To me I believe the motor is a gm crate replacement. Buy the tag on the valve cover. N the slap shifter. Deffently a great rebuild projects great choice Grampa. This is one I'll be following. Can't waite to see it finished girls.
Awesome having you do a video with your grandaughter's They are definitely photo worthy (beautiful ). Enjoy spending precious moments with them
Heck yeah can’t go wrong with old bow tie ❤
Badass truck! I had a 96 ram that looked about the same with lift and tires when I was 18, was a lot of fun! They will remember you helping them on this forever!
Like others have mentioned, where that has been changed from column shift to on the floor maybe you will have to wiggle the column shift part to get safety switch to work to start truck. Pull up on column shift thing where lever was and try to start truck. Also, if it does not have a safety switch on the floor shift, it may start while in gear. Good video and two beautiful young ladies.
Easy check on if you're getting the signal to start from the key is check the smaller wire going to the solenoid on the starter for voltage. Use your voltage meter - Key off = 0V. Get someone to hold the key on = about 12V. Then you know the problem isn't in the vehicle - it's a problem with the solenoid or the starter. If you tried using a screwdriver across the terminals on the solenoid and it still didn't turn over, then it's a bad solenoid or the starter. Great that you're teaching your girls to do mechanics for themselves - every young person (both sexes) should know the basics at the very least so they can take care of their vehicles themselves but also not get taken advantage of by shady mechanics.
Hank, Last I recall, these trucks had an ignition switch attached to the steering column. The key tumbler just moves a rod that slides the ignition switch to the needed position. If that switch is not adjusted correctly, the rod can't slide the switch to the start position. Since the key didn't spring back from the start to run, i suspect the switch screws are loose and slid too far down the column.
Christ has truly risen Happy Easter Hank to you and all yours 🙏🤗💐 Joseph from Lebanon 🇱🇧
He has risen indeed!
Hank I’m so glad that you are taking time and teaching them how to to work on the truck 🛻 and cars 🚗 you’ll have a great 👍 Easter 🐣 😮🎉❤❤
Love the videos it's so awesome that you taking the time to to teach them and they are willing to learn also you should do a video teaching them to drive a big rig that you and wiley rescue
its nice to see the younger generation learn about working on there vehicles
Hi Hank Might want to mention to the girls NEVER use a lighter to look into the radiator to see if low at night time Antifreeze is highly flammable Alcohol based it'll blow fire out the rad spout over a foot ,Learnt from experience myself 😮 That'll be quite the truck for a starter . WE used to call it Slap stick shifter ,They'll never forget first truck ,Hank I'd bet it's the neutral safety on the trans linkage ident probably partially in gear .
Too cool hank God bless ya'll enjoy spending time with those grandkids have fun guys
Those are easy to repair. Was that a column shift at one time? Check that for the key problem.
Hank --you are a gem. They will always remember .
And they are a whole lot of fun to play with in the field in 4x4, and for the rear end noise make sure it is not a bad rear u joint or carrier bearing or one of the other u joints that could very well be what the rear end noise is
pops Hank you got your hands full with them girls
That's something else, ain't it? It started just a few minutes prior.....wow! It makes it easy to figure out the first thing to fix, that's for sure! It's gonna be a fun project for ya'll, though. 👍👍👍 These will be memories they'll have forever! 😎Thanks for sharing, Hank!!
Yeah it was nuts. Lol. Thanks for watching 👍
Hank check wires going to starter the purple wire is for stsrting they get burnt buy the manfoild getting hot and start short to colum if it was automatic it has park safty switch the switch is down at the bottum of colum
Really good bonding time between there dad
I usually end up dropping the ignition electrical switch off of left top side of the steering wheel and use a flat blade screwdriver and start the truck, and i say that because I have several auto to manual and manual shift three spd to automatic transmission steering column trucks why i suggested the manual shift transmission steering column because the blower motor whining shows the truck is getting power.
Mild cam, Edlerbrock manifold, Holley 650 cfm and some headers with 3" straights out the back. Then you will always know where the girls are! Enjoy them while they are young Hank!
Nice job and God bless y'all
They got good taste in trucks I hope the best I hope we get some updates for what y'all have done to his truck great work dad👍
On the steering column right behind the key push up to put the column in park its a neutral safety switch u can bypass it looking for the switch or just keep the column in park to start
Im guessing the Neutral Safety Switch ,where they switched from column to floor shift? Turn the column towards park and see if it starts
If it helps id swap it out to a manual shift transmission steering column try moving the shift collar tube where the automatic transmission gearshift lever was.
more than likely the neutral safety switch is turned to reverse location try turn the shifter hub where the old factory shifter is. Love seeing your grand kids working with you.
Excellent video Hank :) also those truck have Solilendo on top starter possible needs new completed and would change key ignition switch on were key go in and rod linkeage needs hook up if not on bottom of steering wheel there igniter box needs replaced and rod linkeage may come out too! Check those all and should fire up no problem!
Nice Truck. Don't Worry U Will Get There. New Battery Starter
Check your starter switch down on the lower steering column a lot of times they go out or get out of adjustment when I did Auto body hope this helps is going to be a project your granddaughter is going to always remember
Learn them young and in the right way and they will be able to look after them selves through out most problems in life 👍
great video good to see family involved
That’s looks like fun! I’m looking forward to seeing the transformation 🛻
The rod come out that pushes the ignition switch to start it. The rod that goes from the lock cylinder to the ignition switch, I can see when u turn the key it goes all the way with no spring back after cranking.. should be like a white or tan rectangular box towards the middle of the column, that's the ignition switch. Pull that down an u should be able to use a screwdriver to select your on, run and start positions
That is a really nice truck
them 2 young ladies are awsome, hope they enjoy their truck
Hank got me rolling over here over the column switch malfunction
The round key is for the door the square key is for the ignition also try tapping the top of the steering column or tapping the starter and the solenoid is on the starter
Just a bit of useful advice for messing with vehicles that have been sitting around with no hubcaps or no lugnuts on the wheel lube the threads of the lug nuts and the lug studs because transmission fluid doesn't freeze, anyway the lug nuts will go back on alot easier, and I have had several gm square body trucks usually k20 and c20 trucks but oh well.... I also had a carmine dark red and frost gloss white 74 chevy Cheyenne super c10 long bed 2wd as a sofmore in highschool and my junior year freshman year i had a two tone light on top lower dark mint green 74 dodge d100 club cab short bed adventurer trim flatbed truck...
My 76 Cheyenne had the same problem. Turned out to be the ignition switch. I just added a push button switch but still need to turn the key to give power to everything. replace the IGNITION ACTUATOR ROD
Sorry on my Scottsdale not Cheyenne
Good Man , right there !!!...Doin' stuff with those girls. THAT'S a good family member.
great video - it will be a great project - the girls were just too funny when they were sitting in the truck
Great for teaching the girls ❤
It's awesome to see the younger generation interested in old Square body's awesome watch
