Jiu-jitsu - adult competitor gets HUMBLED trying to bully juvenile yellow belt!

2017 ж. 21 Қар.
3 785 821 Рет қаралды

**Edit**
We were TOLD that this guy was a purple belt by one of the coaches who was at the event. WE FOUND OUT LATER that he was a BLUE belt and turned out to be a decent fella!
Watch what happens when this adult purple belt tries to shame and bully a youth competitor that was moved up into the adult class due to no available matches in the 13-15 year old division.

  • I love bjj, but as with any rule set strategies and techniques develop to compliment the rule set not to stay true to any original intent (such as self defense/combat). Butt scooting is for sure a technique for avoiding losing points and position on takedowns, but it looks pretty weak when viewed through the lens of a self defense or combat scenario.

In a street fight, if you go down you really want to be on top, if just so you can get up and move/run should the situation call for it. It's the same thing with a deep half guard game. Can be amazing in a tournament, has you pinned under the other person open for ground and pound with your head against pavement on the street.

    • @@bryantharris5914 Comparing judged, officiated competitive fighting to street fights is a waste of time. How does competitive fighting prepare you to fight 2 of your opponent's buddies who jump out of nowhere to help? Which part of competitive fighting prepares you to wear some guy's drunken, punching, scratching, screaming girlfriend like a 150 pound jacket while you fight the guy? Combat sports and street fights are totally different animals.

      @skybluemarshall@skybluemarshall2 жыл бұрын
    • @@skybluemarshall Combat Sports, Body Guard, Battlefield, Self Defense Situation, Bouncer, Police Arrest... every combat engagement situation is a different context where slightly different 'rules' or objectives will apply. You can't tell a police officer to simply 'walk or run away' from conflict. It's not the context under which he engages in conflict. A soldier fighting on the battlefield has a completely different context from a street fight. So yeah. They are all different, and techniques that are suitable do change. The Strategy changes, the threats change, etc. With that said, your ability to conduct 'combat' is the closest thing you have to a transferable skill. So having some combat skills, any combat skills is better than having no skills. What I was pointing out is that something like 'butt scooting' is easily identifiable as a skill that wouldn't transfer over.

    • i know next to nothing about bjj. but your statement about a self defense scenario is spot on. i have major reservations that the butt scoot is a good defense to someone kicking you in the face which would more than likely be the combat solution if someone flopped down on their rear end like that.

Since top and bottom are equal positions, at least you're engaging your opponent and pulling him to the mat...just sitting down of your own accord and leaving a brown streak across the mat as you slide at your opponent just seems a bit of a disgrace to many players and fans of the sport myself included. I think if someone's going to build their game around butt scooting they should punish the voluntary sit down. That way it's at least a point loss.

  • Based on the title, I expected bullying to happen at some point. The closest it got was some mild mockery of sitting guard. That was well deserved, IMO. If you want to *pull* guard, that is a little lame but fine, but don't just *sit* guard at a tournament. Every match starts standing and his opponent wanted to actually wrestle. EDIT: My objection (and that of many others) is that sitting guard is 1) defensively unsound (don't sit down when you are in a real fight); 2) it entirely ignores an important component of BJJ (standing wrestling and takedowns -- yes, this is part of the sport and not a separate thing); and 3) someone wishing to play guard can *pull* guard -- meaning they tie up while standing and then pull their opponent to the ground -- which can be a sound tactic. Wrestling a larger opponent isn't the challenge some people are presenting it as either. Being on bottom as the smaller or weaker person is actually far more of a challenge than engaging on the feet in a non-striking context, which makes playing open guard a risky strategic move. The guy who lost in this video may have been bigger, but he was not very experienced judging by how little he knew of guard passing and leg lock defense. What we saw of his wrestling was purely defensive, so it's hard to say if he was any better there.

    • @@DOOMLORDHOKAGE The rules say you can't kick people. It is like in judo when you see them lay down on the ground and hold their collar to prevent a choke. Yes, it works for the rules, but it exploits the rules contrary to the spirit of a combat sport. I know it has lots of departures, but this one especially at low-mid level is just dumb. If an olympic judoka does rule-dependent stuff, I think - bleck, how sad. When a blue belt bjj'er does it and then he or his dad post it on the internet like as a humiliating defeat of an opponent because he never saw exclusively sport bjj in his gym, it is distasteful - hence all the comments on it.

    • I don’t think everyone is treating it like a joke. Right now and in the past few years it seems that BJJ has become what Karate and Taekwondo were in the 80s and 90s where it was so popular and everyone doing it thought it was the greatest martial art in the world that couldn’t be beat. Also I realized most gyms now teach it with such a linear focus to a point where it’s not aplicable in a street fight for self defense. Unfortunately you get so many guys (probably the majority in the martial arts community now) who do BJJ for a few years and get all cocky acting like they can out fight anyone in the street….until someone knees them in face while they try a poorly executed take down (because they don’t practice Judo or wrestling), get picked up and slammed while trying to pull guard, or getting smothered in punched and kicks when they try to take the fight to the ground. Anyways sorry for the long rant, I had to get that off my chest lol. I’ve done BJJ for many years now and this has been bothering me about the mindset of most guys.

The thing is that I'd say like a good 30-60% of the time you're dead wrong. Jits is just so much slower/less explosive. However, I wrestled a bit in school so all I really need to work on is my shitty fucking hands and then I'll be a complete fighter.
