  • Amazon must have a lot of money to decide to go for a season 2. If they don't make important changes (especially for the Galadriel character), this is gonna be another disaster!

    • @@fantasywind3923 90% of season 1 is new lore, not changes. Tolkien wrote just a few lines about this period of time anyway. There are indeed only a few real changes. The biggest change is of course the compression of the timeline. But this decision has the blessing of the Tolkien Estate, including the late Christopher Tolkien, and as long as Elendil does not meet Celebrimbor I am ok with it. Then there is a small number of other changes: Gil-galad decides who goes to Valinor and he seems to be the king of the Sindar, too, Elrond is not considered Elven nobility, we have a double Durin and the 3 Rings are forged before the 9 and the 7. And that’s it. No altering of „the whole worldbuilding and lore“ at all.

    • @@anni.68 oh there's a lot of changes...in case of the events of the story and the worldbuilding....I mean seriously the whole thing with mithril? Come on! :). The discovery of mithril is first logical step that precedes the foundation of Eregion....if the Dwarves would not have discovered this metal and it's news did not reach the Elves....there would be no Eregion at all :)...it's pretty basic....a new resource is discovered, Elves establish a new realm to trade for it...simple....but of course the show doesn't care for such worldbuilding details. The whole personality of Galadriel is changed for no reason, also Elrond's role in the story (if anyone would have friendship with Dwarves it would be Celebrimbor), Celebrimbor and his entire relationship with Sauron/Annatar the whole dynamic is changed, as for time compression I couldn't care less about Tolkien Estate approval (and Christopher Tolkien really didn't have anything to say anymore since he stepped down before the deal was even announced)....it still makes no sense (especially since the events should naturally progress in clear cause and effect chain and the compression disrupts some of it) the compression makes no sense in context of the story events...and please....'Tolkien wrote just a few lines about this period of time anyway.' yeah right.....Tolkien wrote a TON about that time period...Second Age has enough material...the problem is the licensing a lot of it is in UT, or in The Silmarillion, so yeah....having only lotr appendices to make this show is like trying to do something precise like clockwork with one hand tied behind your back :). The whole show is just badly using whatever they do have even heheh....after all the things they have in Lotr appendices about Second Age are still contradicted in the show (like the whole deal with TWO Durin's at the same time....especially with the whole aspect of dwarven culture, like beliefs that each next Durin is reincarnation of sorts of Durin the Deathless :)), the timeline of events....hell there is direct chain of events in how the rings are made....the Three being done LAST of all :), then there's issue of the Tar-Miriel never actually ruling :). Also royalty of Numenor never having a palantir (they were soler property of Elendil's house, if anyone should be using them it should be HIM) and of course palantir....do not show the future :), Sauron being in Numenor earlier than in schedule, and the whole thing with him being wrong in that in this specific period he already was a lord of evil again! Also the Rings being HIS WHOLE DAMN PLAN to begin with....his cunning plan to enslave the elves!!!!!!!!! None of that is as it should be....the show changes the story beyond recognition.

    • @@fantasywind3923 You are right about the discovery of Mithril and the founding of Eregion. I never thought about that. I have to add it to my list. But the main interest of Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne is clearly not the timeline, but Tolkien’s great _themes_ . The wish to stop the Long Defeat, to resist the destiny of Arda marred and to maintain the beauty of Middle-earth is indeed one of Tolkien’s main themes for the Elves, especially for the Noldor. That’s the reason why the Rings of Power are made in the first place. So far, only Gil-galad and Celebrimbor believe that the Mithril will save the Fading of the Elves. I am pretty sure that this whole idea will turn out to be wrong. “But also, we know Elrond is a lore master, and he is aware of this tale. He says in that fifth episode that it’s apocryphal. I would trust his read on a piece of lore. Mithril is unusual in Middle-earth. It’s Tolkien’s vibranium, or adamantium, or like the one in Avatar, unobtainium. We know from canon that mithril is in at least one of the rings, Galadriel’s ring. We felt there were possibilities to hint that maybe there’s a little more to it - but maybe not.” (Patrick McKay) Galadriel’s personality has not been changed a lot. She sometimes behaves too immature, but that’s about it. In the books she is described as an very athletic, proud, stubborn and in one case even vengeful princess of "amazon dispsition" who fought together with Finrod against Feanor's Noldor. "Even after the merciless assault upon the Teleri and the rape of their ships, though she[Galadriel] fought fiercely against Feanor in defence of her mother's kin, she did not turn back. Her pride was unwilling to return, a defeated suppliant for pardon; but now she burned with desire to follow Feanor with her anger to whatever lands he might come, and to thwart him in all ways that she could" (Unfinished Tales). "...she withheld her goodwill from none save only Fëanor. In him she perceived a darkness that she hated and feared, though she did not perceive that the shadow of the same evil had fallen upon the minds of all the Noldor, and upon her own" (Unfinished Tales). "She looked upon the Dwarves also with the eye of a commander, seeing in them the finest warriors to pit against the Orcs" (Unfinished Tales). That quote is exactly from the time of the Forging of the Rings of Power. "It was not until two long ages more had passed, when at last all that she had desired in her youth came to her hand, the Ring of Power and the dominion of Middle-earth of which she had dreamed, that her wisdom was full grown and she rejected it, and passing the last test departed from Middle-earth for ever." Elrond’s friendship with Durin is an _addition_ to the Legendarium, not a _change_. The friendship between Celebrimbor and Narvi and the forging of the Doors of Durin is part of season 2. Please stick to the facts! Christopher Tolkien was still in charge of the Estate, when the contract was sealed with amazon and of course amazon is bound to this contract. Everything else is just a very unfair attempt of people who do not like the show to find somebody to blame and to hate. Simon Tolkien did not usurp the throne of the Tolkien Estate. It was the wish of Tolkien’s family that he will become the head of the Estate after his father retired and personally I am very glad that he is more open to adaptations than his father. „The Fall of Numenor“ contains everything that Tolkien ever wrote about the Second Age. The book has 352 pages. 352 pages about an age that lasted for 3500 years! In comparison: LOTR has 1178 pages about a time period of less than 1,5 years! So, no, he did _not_ write a ton about the Second Age and especially not about the years between 882, when Gil-galad sensed a new shadow arising in the East and 1200 when Annatar came to Eregion. In the book this period of time gets about 60 pages, but 40 of these 60 pages are about Aldarion and Erendis. What remains is about 20 pages about the time between the founding of Eregion and the forging of the three Elven Rings of Power. 20 pages about a time period of 350 years! Sauron in disguise coming to Eregion before he came as Annatar is an _addition_ to the Legendarium, not a change. The Elves gave some Palantiri to Amandil to comfort the Faithful. In the show Elendil first has to find out that Miriel is one of the Faithful, but maybe in the "true" history of Numenor Amandil gave Miriel a Palantir anyway. Makes no difference. But if you are upset about such minor and inconsequential changes I suppose that you greatly dislike all Tolkien adaptations, including PJ's movies, who changed a zillion things from the books.

    • You sound like a LOTR cultist; Each of the 2 series are amazing, they explained many things about the time before LOTR that shaped a whole timeline. The same is being done with the Rings Of Power, they're presenting the time period before what we know as middle earth in the "present". I find it interesting and there must have been enough people that did as well for them to make a 2nd season

It's mad... the PJ Original Trilogy, had substance that attracted the Book Fans and would garner new fans. This whole diversity shtick is the reason why this atrocious attempt at "middle earth". Calling this a fan fiction is actually an Insult to Fan Fic. This is coming from a Pakistani, who is also a muslim, I personally grew up not giving a flying flip about Race and Gender Politics. This is like taking a big dump on JRR Tolkien's grave, then smothering it with your bare hands and then saying "I wanted POC in a fantasy world where dragons and fukin dead men walk around" It's like the Haradrim, they are from the East of Middle Earth, why the fuck is there a black dwarf and a black elf who appear to be the only two coloured peoples when one lives in a mountain (deep inside where Melanin isn't being activated due to lack of Sun light and evolutionary change) and don't get me started of Arondir. Middle earth is a basic representation of the West, from Tolkeins POV, look at the US, UK and Europe before mass immigration, white people, not just loads of white people and a dash of brown.
