  • Govee needs to do a better job when it comes the ability to customize the lengths. Its crazy to assume the default lengths will work for everyone and a single extension is enough. Luckily for me I was one of the few who didn't need to splice to make it work.

    @zacharylewis417@zacharylewis4175 ай бұрын
    • Yeah I agree! Their first version (which is the one i'm using in the video) for sure lacked the customizing out of the box. However they for sure improved this on their new model they released last month which comes with a lot more options. Nice to see them take the feedback / criticism from last years model and make changed to the new Pro version.

If you were to extend them, can you just use regular wire and if so what gauge do you think? You mentioned the Dimming, is there a way to get a 3rd party power supply to allow for the list to extend farther than 9 strands and if so do you have any suggested power supplies?

I unconnected and reconnected each splice area to check the connection's but still appears to be flickering. Any thoughts and thank you in advance again these videos have been amazing!

  • Thanks for the info, my question is similar, I was thinking about using these lights to make under counter lights ….so I would start by cutting each light , spicing them together in short lengths groups of three and putting them into a channel with a clear diffuser……add a wire onto it and run it down the wall into a single gang box into my basement…..doing this numerous times for each cabinets till complete….. Once complete I would have 12 wires in my basement leading from the cabinets, I would daisy chain them together and then to the Wi-Fi source and to the power and the opposite side to the switch…… Would that work? And also still controlled by the app? If you have a better way to use Govee lights for under the counter lights I would appreciate it for any info….thanks Ps it would be great if you need a video idea to try this

I have bought a 100ft set up and want to put 50ft on each side of my house but the supplied 12ft extension cable is short by 8ft to join them together . If I cut the supplied 12ft cable and added a 8ft length would the next 3 sections work without flickering etc? ATB Mike StayCornish😬

  • Awesome video Chris. Thank you for going through so many examples of splicing, cutting and extending the govee lights. I am having some issues with mine with flickering. I cut the wire after the govee connection adapter coming from the power supply so i could fish the wire through a wall. I did this due to limited plugs on the exterior and found it better to plug the power from inside. I sploced back on the govee plug that it came with, so no external pieces were used, but i soldered the wires together instead of those clips youve been using. Do you think soldering the wires is my issue for the flicker? Keep in mind i only have two strands up of about 50 ft.

    @randybrown3287@randybrown32875 ай бұрын
    • Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! Thats a good question! No reason at least in all my experimenting should there be any issues with what you described. I would probalby just go back and double check all the wires are connected to the right ones and that all the lights are going in the correct direction. LED strips make it easy since there is an arrow on them indicating what direction the data is flowing (always needs to be going away from the controller) but the govee lights you have to be very careful as there is no indication and you just have to look at the back of the wires and line things up that way since one of the wires has that black line on them. I would also try going backwards and see if you can cut out the soldered part and re connect them again (wago clips would be easier) to see if you can get them to work and once successful, then try soldering again. No for sure answer but usually some trial and error. Also if you did cut the lights with them still plugged in, maybe something shorted out or if you did connect the voltage and ground to the wrong wires that maybe could have done something as well. But tough to say. I've never had any issues so fortunately I have not had to do any troubleshooting myself.

  • Hey Chris! I wanted to ask if you could maybe give me some feedback on something. I wanted to make a starry sky-like LED feature on my ceiling, but I don't want to use fiber optic lights creating a difficult task. My idea was to maybe use something like cork panels, drill small holes in that cork, paint the cork black, and I would attach that cork about a half an inch below my ceiling. On the ceiling will be an LED strip controlled by wLED, and I wanted to use one of the animations that would make the lights twinkle. My intention is to make the holes very small making it look like there are stars on my ceiling but also adding a sort of lively manner to the stars without having to glue 800 fiber optic lights. Can you give me your thoughts? And maybe you could do a video on some ceiling LED features to fill up the space!

After all the splicing, I was left with a second controller and a bunch of random strands with 3 to 4 leds. I'm trying to piece all the strands together to form one long string and take advantage of the second controller, but the leds do not light up after the 15th one. Is there something that I'm missing? I've tried different strands and resetting the lights through the controller and I can't get any of the leds past the 15th one to light up.

It might not be as obvious when they are all in short cut off sections and I know i could see myself very easy connecting one the wrong way. Not much else to try though in terms of troubleshooting. But might be a perfect excuse to try getting them set up with WLED to see if they work through that program! kzhead.info/sun/Y5GGZcdqjYeiaHk/bejne.html

  • First off, thank you for this video! I'm about to install the 200ft Pro version of these next week once I get the rest of the splicing materials in from Amazon. One question though: From my understanding, the app is expecting these to be installed in one continuous string, right? If that is correct, how would it know where you've added a "Y" (split) at so that the lighting effects can properly work? (i.e. say you wanted a 'chasing light' effect) How does the app handle that scenario?

    @jeg3224@jeg32245 ай бұрын

  • Great video as always, but say you accidentally installed a section of lights backwards, can you still splice into them and have them work correctly?

    @plpwheeler@plpwheeler5 ай бұрын
    • Thanks for watching! So installing them backwards is not really an issue when it comes to voltage and gnd since you can figure out the correct wires and those dont matter what end of the strip they are connect to. The issue is with the data. The data has to flow in one direction (away from the controller) Its easy to see what direction that is on led strips since they have have arrows indicating this but on the govee lights, there is no arrow. So if you have one strip installed backwards, it wouldn't plug in correctly using the govee connectors and if you spliced them together where one is backwards, the backwards strip and all the strips after I'm would not work or not work correctly. I would first figure out how to install the backwards one correctly before trying any splicing .

      @ChrisMaherDIY@ChrisMaherDIY5 ай бұрын
    • I also installed mine backwards (had the male end of the PSU against the male end of the first string of lights). I tried cutting off the male end from the first string of lights and replacing it by splicing in the female end from the extension cord. This did not work. At all. I ended up having to reroute my PSU to meet up with the female end of the string lights. Thankfully the lights still worked but now I'm having trouble getting any power after resplicing the extension cable and going from PSU to extension cable to string lights. Anyways, all that to say, don't try swapping a male end for a female connector - it won't work due to the directionality of the data cable.

And, when you split in a new section did the split in lights mirror the set they were split from, or did they act independently as a new set? • Thanks so much for watching and great question! I just used the regular power supply that the lights came with. When you split a segment, they mirror the same animation/color/effect that is happening on the longer of the segments. So on the first example in the video where I splice in the 8 lights, those 8 lights will do the exact same thing as the 8 lights on the main run after the splice. If the splice had 12 lights, then those 12 lights would do the exact same thing as the 12 lights on the main run after the splice. I’d like to splice at the beginning and then run wiring approximately 20-30 feet to the 2nd story eve before installing another strip of lights. Is there wiring (and gauge) you recommend for that?

      @LisandroRivera@LisandroRivera5 ай бұрын
    • I bought 18 gauge for my install. When you use smaller gauge you increase resistance so that could lead to flickering

  • I've picked up a 65.6' set of Govee, (not the M1's), and didn't need the last 10' of Nodes. Can I buy just the Govee controller, and power supply so I can use the last 10' some where else? I've looked but cannot find it.

  • @ChrisMaherDIY, I know govee says not more than 150ft on single controller. Can I split that 150ft line somewhere in between with 2 or 3 additional extension strings? So that, one path of Y connection is 150ft, other path of Y is 30ft. Is it okay to do or will there be issues?

  • Are you still planning on doing a video on how to connect the Eufy lights to WLED? I’ve watch your “Connecting Govee to WLED” like 50 times and purchased what I need to do the same for my Eufy kit. Also, I need about 1 or 2 more strands beyond the 100ft. Q1: Would WLED allow me to add on to my kit? Q2: Would the Eufy power supply still work? If not, which power supply would I need?

    @bradenjenkins9893@bradenjenkins98935 ай бұрын
    • Thanks as always for watching! Yes I still do plan on it! It should be pretty similar to the govee one but not 100% sure until I actually try it! I know Rob over at the hook up had some information on this thats for sure worth checking out! But yes I do want to still do a complete walkthrough of getting them set up to wled. Wled will allow you to add more strands beyond 100 ft. and the Eufy power supply should still work for that!

    • In preparation, I purchased a 36V 3A Power Supply Adapter AC 100V~240V to DC 36 Volt Converter 108W on Amazon. (This is similar to the 200ft Govee kit). Not sure if this would work or not.

  • I have a 150ft installed. Can I make a y split at the beginning of the last segment and extend another 50ft? Govee says can’t have it linger than 150 ft but who knows.

    • Thanks for watching! Great question! So my experience is that the actual length is not so much the issue (although there is a point where voltage drop will be too much and lights will not work properly) but its more the number of lights. The controllers are pre programmed to only allow a max number of lights and adding lights to a strip more than that pre set max number will result in nothing happening if that makes sense. So I think you could for sure split at the beginning of the last segment but my guess is any additional lights past the 12 that are on each segment of the non pro version would not work.

  • I wonder what the "chase" feature looks like on the spliced line.

    @stewartsucher928@stewartsucher9285 ай бұрын
    • Thanks so much for watching! So when you splice in light, the app looks the exact same and doesn't know that data is being split. So on the first example in the video where I splice in the 8 lights, those 8 lights will do the exact same thing as the 8 lights on the main run after the splice. If the splice had 12 lights, then those 12 lights would do the exact same thing as the 12 lights on the main run after the splice.

  • I've actually done this in one of my projects. the branch off just follow the same path as the other branch. What I need to figure out is how to run 60 Nodes total in 10 different batches/props. Each prop is any where from 10' to 25' apart with a total run of 125' without losing signal. Any ideas?

    @imlon2@imlon25 ай бұрын
    • Very cool! Everything worked out well it sounds like! Man thats a lot of custom work on the 60 nodes in 10 different batches/props. I would say just a lot of trial and error would be what I would start with. But also when you need things that custom, might be a good time to look at the ws2811 pixels. Those are the ones people use in those crazy music synced light shows you see all over the place.

    @jimmuelken2362@jimmuelken23625 ай бұрын
