It's no secret that I have been trying to eat more healthy so I wanted to try to eat like plant based tennis champion Novak Djokovic for a day and wow... it wasnt a huge change for me, but the little changes that were there were pretty great. It was fun to try something entirely different and see how it felt.
This is the best information I could find about what Novac eats. I did my best to find accurate information, but I can not guarantee this is 100% his daily diet.

Pasta Primavera: Buy dried tomatoes in oil and use the (tomato) oil to fry your vegetables. Gives so much more flavor.
Monica is so lucky to live with a plant based chef!
I agree! They're both so lucky to have each other! They both seem like lovely folks!
SO LUCKY!
Surprised by how little primary protein there is in this, for an athlete's diet. The food looks very high in micronutrients, so that may be what he's aiming for. It looks delicious to me, as a salad and veggie lover! Thanks for posting : )
Everything I read states that he is looking for the easiest to digest with little very caloric effort used for digestion. He wants all the energy used to go to his lifestyle. Pretty interesting thought process.
20 years ago when i first went vegan, i subscribed to a magazine (veg?) that featured frequent articles about vegan olympians. i aim for a high protein diet (tofu, beans) and am gluten free because that seems to work for me. but i'd love to see what VGF olympians are eating these days. i wonder whether they're going for what novak does with the easily digestible micronutrients, or do they go for more protein like i do (i'm pretty active but have a desk job)? thanks for doing this, sir!! @@SauceStache
because it is primary protein in every single ingredient in all of his meals. Primary protein is from plants not animals.
@@SauceStachehis diet is mainly based on vegetables, beans, white meat, fish, fruit, nuts, seeds, chickpeas, lentils and healthy oils.
The lack of protein is interesting but this is a good way to eat imo. I do something similar but with more legumes for the protein and not gf. I like the barilla plant protein pasta, tastes great and adds a lot of extra nutrition
I'm sure he eats different things slightly that give him more protien depending, but most Americans eat something like 2x as much protien as they need lol
Yeah, I'm vegan and usually can't stand the "What about the proteins?" people but I noticed this as well. If I ate like this day in/day out, I'd end up with muscle aches and I don't even work out like an athlete. I need my legumes to feel full and satiated as well. But, if it works for him, it works for him.
@@mikorisheridan6769he’s an athlete or whatever he needs more protein. From this eating in a day sample it’s a very small amount especially for an athlete it seems.
@@user-bv7mk8id5t I was an athlete for years, as I said most people don't eat enough, and this is just a KZheadr doing a review of what he talked about he eats, not a 100% accurate version I'm sure. I don't care though 😁 you can disagree all day 😁 I'm literally saying bro has nutritionists
@@user-bv7mk8id5t he needs more protein because he burns more calories, not because he needs a higher ratio of protein from his diet
Am a big fan of carrot and ginger soup, this one looks yum. Would like to see more of this kind of video, it'd be fun to see how you would interpret well-known vegan and plant-based people's favourite diets, there's a lot of variation in what all these people eat. Nice one, guys.
Want to zing up that carrot soup? Instead of apple cider vinegar, add lime juice and zest.. and lemon grass. Before you blitz it, throw in a handful of cilantro. You are welcome! It’s so delicious 😋
Ohhhhh I LOVE that idea! The lime and zest along with lemon grass... sounds amazing
@@SauceStache It is.. you’ve just transformed it into a Thai soup! 🤓👍
Perhaps you could try to cook some of the zucchini until soft and blend them, then add some of the other veg… this would make the pasta primavera creamy and crunchy otherwise it may be too dry. Greeting from Italy
I'm currently doing a pretty successful food experiment as well: I let ChatGPT design me (vegan) food plans with recipes for the next day. I give it all the ingredients I have including amounts and best before dates where available and tell it the current date and that it should prioritize fresh fruits and vegetables and ingredients where the best before is in the past or near future. It works pretty well. Sometimes it makes some errors, like for tomorrow it gave me way too big portion sizes for one person, but after telling it so, it corrected the recipes. Today I had some popped amaranth with walnuts, raspberries and chocolate soy milk for breakfast, a chickpea curry with rice for lunch and some pretzel stick filled with mustard, fried vegan bacon cubes, onion, tomato and salad for dinner. Tomorrow I'll have a raspberry-oat smoothie for breakfast, a risotto salad for lunch and potato pancakes with apple sauce for dinner. Might be an idea for a video - you can steal it if you like.
Vegan bacon... CUBES? What? That sounds interesting
@@AndwiseTheHappy They're very common at least here in Germany. We have multiple brands of them. After your comment I wasn't sure they're really called that in English, but a Google of the term shows me exactly that.
@HarveyHirdHarmonics I looked them up, and I just kept getting results for vegan bacon bits. Maybe they're the same or similar? 🤔
@@AndwiseTheHappy I think so. Just another name. But I think bacon bits could also not be cube shaped? Mine were. 🙂
I think that most people would know them as lardons in the US/UK etc.
Not specifically related to this upload but your transformation has been an incredible inspiration. Thank you.
Rich Roll is another plant based athlete whose recipes I’ve been trying lately.
He is on my list for diets to try!
So glad you did this on Novak..hes a fabulous guy full of principles, great player;who stood by his convictions and came out on top and thrilled to know he's vegan.im vg and gf(for medical purposes)so this was extra interesting to see what he ate.mixed together with the incredible sauce stache,i cant think of a more winning combo.thankyou.have loved and admired your channel for years now 🙏❤ 🇬🇧
What a gorgeous couple! Loved the video and how much you were surprised at how yummy the food was.
my boi Novak is plant-based?!! it's amazing! i moved to Balkans and oooof it's hard to find any sympathy in restaurants or when i come over when i say that i'm vegan. now i'm going to say that i just eat like our most favorite sport athlete haha! thank you for the video! you're my favourite vegan chef on youtube!
Plant based does not mean exclusive. He is not vegan. His diet is mainly based on vegetables, beans, white meat, fish, fruit, nuts, seeds, chickpeas, lentils and healthy oils.
i've been eating my apples with peanut butter. :) i'd never heard of such a thing til i went to dance camp a few years ago, and the lady who used to organize the camp introduced me to that delightful combination. i find that i digest apples better this way, which is great because i love them but would be otherwise "afraid" to eat them.
I would love to see a video, what you like/ tend to eat in a day. You have so many recipes, so many stuff shown and found it delicious, but what are the best meals, the most consistent classics you stuck to
This made me wanna eat salads 👀 I'm a vegan who never eats salad but now I want to atleast eat a dijon dressing one
I like this idea, want you to try more celeb diets for the day :)
Djokovic believes in magic crystals and astrology...I'm not sure he's a great example to follow xD
I dont think he is a great example... which is why I only focused on the food.
And he's a Serbian nationalist with some...strong views on the genocides in Serbia in 90s. And anti-vaxxer.
Focused on food, but failed to mention that this is not to promote a guy as a person, which video looks like a bit.
Great examples of healthy recipes to incorporate into the day. I especially want to try the oats and the carrot soup. 😋
Love this idea ❤❤❤
Awesome the carrot soup i will definitely try oh what brand hand blender is that
Love a carrot and ginger soup, don't normally add coconut milk, but it's so warming - great for those winter evenings or if you're a bit sick. I'm also not a fan of rabbit food style salads - but I do quite like grain or carb based salads like tabouli or bean salads. Not a great deal of protein as everything was either super carby or super fatty - I'm sure he ends with enough by virtue of just eating a ton of calories but if you aren't eating 3-4k cals this is probably going to fall on the lower side.
Love Monica's commentary!
Shes pretty fantastic!!
Definitely seems like a good way of eating. Everything looked great and despite the lack of protein athletes usually strive for, I'm definitely surprised and intrigued. The salad and soup seemed flavorful, I think I'll try this out!!!
maybe your perception about protein is incorrect- clearly Djokovic is meeting his protein requirements on this plant food diet.
@@yakzivz1104 it's much less than many athletes tend to intake and I find it to be very interesting. Not saying one is more correct or healthy than the other. Truthfully I'm not educated well enough with nutritional needs to have much input other than that this way of eating is very interesting to me.
His diet is mainly based on vegetables, beans, white meat, fish, fruit, nuts, seeds, chickpeas, lentils and healthy oils.
Great video
It all looked pretty good. Have you ever ordered a gluten free pizza? One of our workers on our house has celiac so when we buy pizzas for lunch we have to order a gluten free pizza along with the regular. The large combination pizza is $15.:The small gluten free pizza is $15. lol
Yeah... there is a local pizza spot here that does gluten free pizza and its really good. One of my good friends entire family has celiac, so their whole house is gluten free. I'll be honest ive had gluten free pasta before that wasnt as good as what I got today, so we were pretty surprised.
@@SauceStache I would give it a go for sure. If it tastes good I will eat it. If it happens to be gluten free and/or vegan so be it.
You're so awesome for this. Novak is a true champ and people need to know more about his success that is purely based on his diet and mindfulness
What about practice/training tho lol
Just finished watching this. It was very interesting to see you and Monica try becoming a gluten free vegan for 24 hours... 😃😃😃😃😃 I haven't pre se been diagnosed with celiac myself, but I do have a wheat allergy, according to my friend Bob, who is a nutritionist of sorts ... That's why I am a gluten free vegan not due to medical reasons, but it helps me to manage symptoms of IBS and I get to discover new things in the process that I didn't like piror, ingredients, learn about cultural diversity in the comfort of the kitchen, and then when I eat something that I'm really not suppose to do, it comes back with a bit of a vengeance then I have to visit the chiropractor... If you do the pasta primavera again; try to find Banza because it has 25 grams of protein, made from chickpeas, and is gluten free vegan too...😏😏😏😏😏 Anyway hope you and Monica have a safe healthy terrific Tuesday midmorning....
I feel so much better since going gluten free.
I bet!! It seems like you feel lighter. Im not going entirely gluten free.. but I am limiting it a bit more than I used to
i went GF in 2009 and just love it. less overall inflammation and no more belly bloat. i'm fortunately not celiac, so i can have gluten every now and then as long as i don't overdo. i'd never go back to my old way of eating. :) @@SauceStache
Cool! Just from the title I braced myself for boring food but these all look great!
That's not so far from the cauliflower and carrot soup I make sometimes. But I haven't tried with ginger🤔
The ginger really added a LOT to it... I'm really loving carrot soup lately, I've made a few like this with different variations, I need to try cauliflower, I bet it gets really rich and creamy
Loved the lemon face! I feel ya! lol
It's very likely that he has some protein sources that you couldn't find like beans and legumes, since none of these had any ingredients that are normally considered protein rich (nuts has a lot, but not per calorie). Also, since he's an athlete, he likely eats much larger portions as well. Anyhow, interesting to see!
Pasta and oatmeal are pretty good sources of protein, plus the nut butter and seeds. Still I’d reckon there’s no more than 30g of protein all told. Surprisingly little. I have a suspicion that we have been mislead about how much protein we really need on a daily basis. I mean, it’s not like there’s a multi billion dollar industry out there with a vested interest in push protein on us, is there…..
30g is way too low though. Theres plenty of good quality research our there on protein requirements, and it has nothing to do with industry or profit. Christopher Gardener is a huge proponent of a plant forward, wholefood diet and without protein supplements, and even he recommends to aim for the RDA of protein. Some experts like Stuart Philip's would argue a higher amount is needed. Bearing in mind our absorption capacity lowers as we get older, right at the same time we may experiene loss of muscle mass and a loss of bone mass. The greatest body of evidence on protein restrictive diets is based in animals, there isnt good human data to support diets low in protein.@@philiptaylor7902
@@philiptaylor7902Oats, pasta and grains do contain a lot of protein, but it's not a lot from a per calorie POV. Nuts even less so. So while they are good and should be accounted for, that should ideally not be the main source of protein. For someone like Djokovic, he should be getting around 1.2 grams per kilo of body weight if he wants to be able to maintain or increase muscle mass. For normal people who don't work out a lot, 0.8 is more than enough. So if you weigh 80kg, that's about 64g. And no need to fret more if you're plant-based, as long as you eat varied. Christopher Gardner is a nutrition science professor at Stanford and has a lot of good content on protein, and Simon Hill has a good podcast where he invites leading scientists to talk about nutrition if you're interested.
His diet is mainly based on vegetables, beans, white meat, fish, fruit, nuts, seeds, chickpeas, lentils and healthy oils. Somehow this video removed the main proteins sources from his diet? 😅😅
@@soulnight1606 he stopped eating all animal protein all together for some time now.

I like this type of video!
ten years of tofu every which way i eventually said f it and now do two 60/70 gram protein shakes a day (230-260g extra firm tofu, tahini, pea or brown rice powder, whole lemon slice, juice) it's way easier and healthier since no oils and salt/sugar etc. then i can eat my regular meals without having to over vegan protein them ie pastas and hummus plates potatoes stir fries etc also to reach my daily protein target i realized there was just no other way to get that amount of protein into me every day
That soup looked yummy.
It was WILDLY good!! Really good! I've made soups like this before but I'm glad I tweaked this one to be a bit more whole and healthy.
Agreed with Monica. Ive had some gluten free foods that are good. Not all of them, but there are some that are better than the gluten versions. Like gluten free pastries or baked goods, oh my goodness they're so good!
yessss! kinnick kinnick GF graham crackers are the BEST. better than any other graham cracker in the world! :)
I'm a tennis fan (Djokovic is awesome), vegan, and often find myself cooking for gluten-intolerant and coeliac friends/family. Love your channel, but this specific video feels oddly relevant to my interests - can't believe it's taken me this long to get around to watching it hahah
It is true that we consume tons of wheat products, trying Gluten Free made me aware of it. I now make a conscious effort to introduce a wider variety of grains in my diet, with or without Gluten. ❤
Given the amount of protein experts say males should eat per day im confused, and he's a pro athlete, but I loved this video!!!!!
The background music is soo much lower; thank you.
Did Noom tell you to cut down on olive oil? You look amazing, I can see more bone structure.
That is an interesting diet, but Idk if I could do it. I need Protein to help my body process the carbs I eat because of my diabetes, and I honestly enjoy feeling full. But it is an interesting thought process.
His diet is mainly based on vegetables, beans, white meat, fish, fruit, nuts, seeds, chickpeas, lentils and healthy oils.
That looks good - I will definitely be giving this a try - a word of caution: beware of the almond nut butter - it is delicious, no, actually to die for, but man, that stuff is an absolute calorie bomb! Anyway, take care and thanks for all the cool videos... :-)
I probably should be gluten free because I made some seitan the other day and the flour and the dough made my hands feel a little itchy.
You look amazing!! I follow the starch solution so, I'll try how you & your wife ate in this diet minus the oil.
A plant-based cook starting to get used to salad is kinda funny on its own, but salad is helpful
Very interesting! But how can such a low protein/low calorie diet be suitable for an athlete? It obviously is working in his case but it just looks odd, does he claim to eat like this everyday? 🤔
No, I couldn't find a lot on his diet, this was based off the best I could and he does claim to eat very light, he wants digestion to take up the least amount of calories. I do think on high intensity days he might add more protein, but couldnt find reliably what that was
@@SauceStache makes sense, thank you!
I noticed you added salt to the food Adding salt has side effects. Has Mr Djokovic said he uses salt ?
Haha, I mean normal people probably don't need the snacks. He's probably got like 6 sessions throughout the day. Running, yoga, gym, hitting practice, stretching, drills, point play, etc.
Djokovic is a nut! 😂😂😂😂
There's a Swedish body builder and champion, who used to only eat bananas.
Wow! You've lost a lot of weight compared to your earlier videos!
Gluten free is a game changer. After 10+ yrs I will never go back. No more bloating, stomach aches, indigestion, etc etc.
No legumes? no high lysine foods?
Funny you called him Novak which is his name but so many people call him Djokovich
Why is this comment section becoming a hate thread for Novak Djokovic. First off all of these videos are primarily about the food. Second, whatever your political thoughts are, Djokovic is considered one of if not the best Tennis players in the history of the sport, and he must be a fairly healthy individual to accomplish that. Highlighing that this is his diet on a currently health focused channel seems to align itself naturally. Thank you for more content Sauce, no matter what form it takes.
Thank you!! I kinda knew this would be a little polarizing, but not this much. I tried to focus 99% of the video on the diet itself for such an active trained person.

Your body needs protein! It's how we evolved. Educate yourself on the essential amino acids that our body cannot manufacture and combine those from different foods. Not saying you have to get them from meat if you do a little research and come up with a diet is that nutritious. You can survive on just about any diet for awhile but eventually you will put your health at risk if it doesn't give your body what it needs to thrive, not just survive. We are too easily influenced by everything new that comes along with some slick marketing by someone famous .
How much protein do you need? How much do you think was in this day?
@@SauceStache Hey Sauce ! wasn't expecting you to respond .Nice to know you read the comments. Depending on your goals, 80 gms of quality protein up to 150 if you are trying to build muscle. By quality I mean foods containing all your essential amino acids. protein is just the name of the package that contains a few or high amounts of them. Just about every food source contains protein . An athlete burning many calories a day could obtain enough protein by the sheer volume of food he eats, even if no particular food contains a large amount. Protein is necessary for just about every function in the body for such as tissue repair, for hair, skin, bone, blood production (hemoglobin to carry oxygen), hormones , everything !
