Possibly but Bulgaria got hammered 3-0 by African champions Nigeria in the group stages. Not a fluke win because Nigeria was only overcome after extra time in the round of 16 by eventual runnerup Italy.

As a German I was certainly disappointed but watching the Bulgarian team in 1994 they were like watching a masterful orchestra; all of their passes were perfection and they seemed to know what each other were thinking, certainly a thing of beauty to watch them in 1994.

germany should have won this match......................they scored a goal first and then a second goal which was cancelled....if it was not for the post and the score was 2-0 it was then all over for bulgaria........but luck was with bulgaria and that's foootball.

I remember watching this match late at night in South Africa as a 12 year old, supported Bulgaria after watching them defeating Argentina and I liked their surnames ending with V, I jumped very high when Letchkov scored that header.

Spent some time in SA. Englishman here. Used to go there for up to three months a year between 1995 and 1999 for work purposes. Was there for the Rugby World Cup in 1995 when Madiba wielded his magic. Respect from England

This German team was so arrogant and the penalty on Klinsmann was a joke, they deserved so much to lose. I remember I started jumping so frenetically after Letchkov's legendary header that I almost fell out of the window of my 16st floor apartment in São Paulo, Brazil. Unforgetable world cup moment

England weren’t in this World Cup so we followed the games (at like 2 AM!!) with no stress. Romania and Bulgaria became our heroes in this tournament. Great football from them and great team spirit. Letchkovs goal will always be in the memories.

@@swaldron5558Do you realise it was the English who came up with the term soccer? Because at the time, they needed to distinguish between rugby (rugger) and Association (assocer) football. Eventually, association became the dominant form of football in Britain but it remains secondary to native variants in places like Ireland, US and Australia. That’s why we (about 90% of the Anglosphere) still say ‘soccer’

Even if Bulgaria shooted out France in 1993, I was really glad of them after this super game. After goal of Hristo I felt that something crazy could happen in the few minutes just after. I watched this match when I was in 7th Grade in school. I remember that I used to watch '94 World cup at about 3:00 a.m Pakistan Standard Time midnight. I was so excited when Bulgaria upset Germany. Hristo Stoichkov was one of my favorite player at that time.

Letchkov's header was an unforgettable moment. Revisiting it now, Stoichkov's FK was also wonderful, there is no way any keeper would have stopped that. I was 10 when I watched this epic game, everyone were expecting Germany to win but Bulgaria played better and deserved it.

Это супер матч был! Тогда Германию победить было очень сложно. Они были невероятно сильны. Очень сильное поколение. Действующие чемпионы мира. Но и у Болгарии была лучшая сборная в своей истории. Великолепные голы они забили в этом матче. Если бы Болгария ещё и до финала дошла! Мне, кстати, на том Чемпионате мира были очень симпатичны сборные Болгарии и Румынии. Ну и голландцы. За них я всегда болею. А в финале было жаль Италию. Жаль, что Баджо не забил тот решающий пенальти. Играл он тогда здорово!

I watched this game live on TV in an early morning at home with my father. If I am not mistaken, this is the first time World Cup games are broadcast live in China. I remember vividly the free kick from No.8 and the header from the bold guy. It was a good game and it was a good summer.

I remember that match. I watched with my father. We cheered on Bulgaria. Dad made a bet with a friend about Whsiky that Bulgaria to win. We cried with joy after the second goal. I was 10 years then. Great moments with my father- I remember this euphoria to this day. How football can connect

Bulgaria was in WC qualifying group with huge favourite France and beat them. France was top3 team in world at 94-96 (later in 96-00 No1) but finish on 3rd place and didn't qualified. Bulgaria qualified from that group with Sweden. That was big surprise... ... Story didn't finish. Golden cherry on this cake is fact both countries played in semifinal - almost played against each other in final. Bulgaria - Sweden in final??? Probably penalties as well but score after 90min 4-4 or 5-5.

I remember that was watching this game at home with mates and will not forget how we were screeming. After that I never saw so many people on the streets in Varna. We went to the beatch by crossing fingers for Romania vs. Sweden. We were so happy about our guys and victory... I was 21 years old on the beatch and still remember that even 3 days after there were no German tourists on the seasite. Perhaps they were hiding in the hotels.

For us, Bulgarians, this was more than a football World Cup. Back at the time we were a bankrupted post-coomunist state, overlooked by most of Europe. The populace was depressed and hardly saw much perspective for their own country. And then World Cup USA 94 happened! We saw and the world saw that we still have spirit to overcome seemingly impossible obstacles! Heck, even many of our neighbours in the war-torn Balkans cheered for us! I was small then but still remember the euphoria!

I started watching Cricket in 1992 and Football in 1994. I remember it was a Sunday and the matches were shown on DD. I was travelling in train and came to know about Germany's loss next morning through news on DD.

Letchkov, Stoickov, Balakov, Ivanov me caian gordos los Bulgaros por que dias antes habian eliminado a Mexico en penales, pero que bien jugaban, le ponian chingo de ganas y nunca bajaban los brazos, esos son los juegos de Mundial.

Like I said many times Stoichkov could turn almost all situations to his favour. It's not easy to defeat Germany; a walled-drilled defence (one of the best) led by Kahn, determined and star-studded with Voeller, Klinsman, you name it. But this Bulgarian squad (probably the best ever by Bulgaria) turned the table against the FIFA favourite Germany. Bulgaria was a real shocker in this tournament and was very unfortunate to make it to the final. This squad with a little bit spirit, motivations and determinations could have won in 1998. It will be a long and winding road for Bulgaria to repeat such amazing performances; skills, creativity and determination. This has been one of the most happiest moment of football I have ever had in my entire World Cup viewings.

I remember watching this match late at night in South Africa as a 12 year old, supported Bulgaria after watching them defeating Argentina and I liked their surnames ending with V, I jumped very high when Letchkov scored that header.

I watched this match when I was in 7th Grade in school. I remember that I used to watch '94 World cup at about 3:00 a.m Pakistan Standard Time midnight. I was so excited when Bulgaria upset Germany. Hristo Stoichkov was one of my favorite player at that time.
Letchkov's header was an unforgettable moment. Revisiting it now, Stoichkov's FK was also wonderful, there is no way any keeper would have stopped that. I was 10 when I watched this epic game, everyone were expecting Germany to win but Bulgaria played better and deserved it.

Это супер матч был! Тогда Германию победить было очень сложно. Они были невероятно сильны. Очень сильное поколение. Действующие чемпионы мира. Но и у Болгарии была лучшая сборная в своей истории. Великолепные голы они забили в этом матче. Если бы Болгария ещё и до финала дошла! Мне, кстати, на том Чемпионате мира были очень симпатичны сборные Болгарии и Румынии. Ну и голландцы. За них я всегда болею. А в финале было жаль Италию. Жаль, что Баджо не забил тот решающий пенальти. Играл он тогда здорово!
I watched this game live on TV in an early morning at home with my father. If I am not mistaken, this is the first time World Cup games are broadcast live in China. I remember vividly the free kick from No.8 and the header from the bold guy. It was a good game and it was a good summer.

Bulgaria was in WC qualifying group with huge favourite France and beat them. France was top3 team in world at 94-96 (later in 96-00 No1) but finish on 3rd place and didn't qualified. Bulgaria qualified from that group with Sweden. That was big surprise... ... Story didn't finish. Golden cherry on this cake is fact both countries played in semifinal - almost played against each other in final. Bulgaria - Sweden in final??? Probably penalties as well but score after 90min 4-4 or 5-5.
One of the great shocks in World Cup history. They deserved it Bulgaria 🇧🇬 and little did we know how far they would get in the tournament. Had a great side. The golden generation in Bulgarian football.
Bulgaria has beaten France to qualify for WC 94. Some people predicted that Germany would have struggled and they did struggled against brave Bulgaroans. In the game, Klinsman dived to get penalty!!!!!
I remember that was watching this game at home with mates and will not forget how we were screeming. After that I never saw so many people on the streets in Varna. We went to the beatch by crossing fingers for Romania vs. Sweden. We were so happy about our guys and victory... I was 21 years old on the beatch and still remember that even 3 days after there were no German tourists on the seasite. Perhaps they were hiding in the hotels.

For us, Bulgarians, this was more than a football World Cup. Back at the time we were a bankrupted post-coomunist state, overlooked by most of Europe. The populace was depressed and hardly saw much perspective for their own country. And then World Cup USA 94 happened! We saw and the world saw that we still have spirit to overcome seemingly impossible obstacles! Heck, even many of our neighbours in the war-torn Balkans cheered for us! I was small then but still remember the euphoria!

I started watching Cricket in 1992 and Football in 1994. I remember it was a Sunday and the matches were shown on DD. I was travelling in train and came to know about Germany's loss next morning through news on DD.
as a german I am still mad at this. German team was arguably nearly as stacked as 90 but they played bad and far under their potential. Hats of to Bulgaria that was a great team.

The greatest surprise of this world cup! I still remember the happiness of Bulgarians when the referee blew the final whistle, and later that day or the next day, their celebration in their hotel.

Like I said many times Stoichkov could turn almost all situations to his favour. It's not easy to defeat Germany; a walled-drilled defence (one of the best) led by Kahn, determined and star-studded with Voeller, Klinsman, you name it. But this Bulgarian squad (probably the best ever by Bulgaria) turned the table against the FIFA favourite Germany. Bulgaria was a real shocker in this tournament and was very unfortunate to make it to the final. This squad with a little bit spirit, motivations and determinations could have won in 1998. It will be a long and winding road for Bulgaria to repeat such amazing performances; skills, creativity and determination. This has been one of the most happiest moment of football I have ever had in my entire World Cup viewings.
